ActionScript 3.0 :: Movie Clip - If The Arrow Key Is Held Down, The "gotoAndPlay(9)" Stops The Animation From Playing?
Apr 18, 2009
I have a MC called Robot. It is animated with keyframes so that my robot appears to walk. There is an Action on frame 8 that says, "gotoAndPlay(1)".When the user pushes the arrow keys, I want to MC to move in the direction of the press arrow. I also want the MC to start playing at keyframe 9 so it plays the walking animation.
This all works but with one small problem. If the arrow key is held down, the "gotoAndPlay(9)" stops the animation from playing, instead showing only the graphic that is on the 9nth keyframe.
Code:
// initialize arrow variables
var leftArrow:Boolean = false;
var rightArrow:Boolean = false;[code]....
Is there a way to call a function once and play the MC frames until the arrow key is not pressed? I think the problem I am having is that if the key is held down, the EventListener keeps running and starting the MC in the same frame instead of allowing the MC to play as I want it to.

I have a movie clip of a character who is supposed to walk when the arrow keys are held down. The character does move in response to the keys being held down, but the walk cycle in the movie clip only plays once. (Flash file is attached.)
I used a Trace in the code to see what the issue is, and one thing that I noticed is that the function seems to run over and over. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it?

I am making a banner that has multiple movie clips sharing the same area, creating different rainbow effects when different areas (invisible buttons) are moused over.
First of all I couldn't figure out if there was a way to have one invisible button over the whole area that changed to a different colored effect with each mouse over (first mouse over the black and whites would change to reds, second would change it to blues, third would change it to browns, etc.). Since I couldn't figure this out I settled on creating three buttons covering a third of the banner each, so when the mouse passes over one button it changes to reds, over another button it changes to blues, over the third it changes to browns.
The effects are movie clips where each frame has another stripe changing color so it goes in a wave effect from one to the next, and then goes back to white and black in the same manner. The first frame of each movie clip I had to turn into a nested movie clip so I could turn the alpha to 0, since I was going to have these color effect movie clips on top of one another in the main timeline on different layers, and so you could see the effect even if that color layer wasn't on top. I used the same nested movie clip with zero alpha for the first frame of each color effect clip (reds movie clip, blues movie clip, etc), so I dont' know if that's an issue.
Anyway, it seemed to work fine for a while, but after working on it for a while longer (and not getting any further since I removed most of the changes I made), now when I test the movie the mouse over does not seem to work correctly. It works fine, seemingly, for the first time I mouse over each button, but in order to have it work again I have to mouse over the button twice, and then it will pause randomly during a part of the clip and I have to move my mouse back over for the movie clip to continue.
I can't tell if this is because of the overlapping movie clips, or because my buttons are messed up, or if my actionscript is messed up, or if the timeline has to be longer, or what. Currently the timeline is 55 frames, the same as each movie clip.
I put a movieclip_instance.stop(); command in the first frame of the main timeline, is there a better way to do this? Should I put the stop command in the movie clip itself?
Here is a section of my AS in the main timeline, this is my first time programming ever, in any language, and trying to learn from the internet is more difficult than I thought it would be.
redmovie.stop();
red_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, playRed);
function playRed(event:MouseEvent):void
{
redmovie.play();
}

how to detect if an animation in a movie clip stops?I make myself clear:I have a movie clip with different animations which I call from the stage with mc.gotoAndPlay("frame label"). Being these animation one after another in the timeline I call a stop() function to avoid the animation after to begin without being called.
Now, on the stage I want to play one of these animations and when this stops I want to make something happen.Is there an event that tells me "this movie clip is not 'animating' anymore"?

When I uncomment trace this.alpha = 1 the ANIMATION IS STOPPED.

I'm developing a simple application at the same time as I am studying some things in actionscript and I've got the following code:
ActionScript Code:
if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) {
x -= speed;
this.gotoAndStop(2);
_xscale = -scale;
} if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) {
[Code] .....
I've got an object, and every time I press one of those keys those actions happen. My problem is that, when I press SHIFT, the object appears in that way (frame 3), but It doesn't play that animation it just stops in the first frame. How can I say "if you press SHIFT at the same time as RIGHT or LEFT, gotoAndStop(3); and the object that is in frame 3 only plays if either RIGHT or LEFT is down too"?

I am loading an external SWF file into my main timeline. The external SWF file contains an FLV video. At a certain point in my main timeline, the SWF file loads and plays the video. Is there a way to say...
If the VIDEO (FLV) is done playing, gotoAndPlay(X)?

ok lets say you create a button that when held down play an animation of 20 frames if realsed it goes to frame one and stops if held down it plays out this animation. for the topic lets say you have a fire animation and you want the fire to apear and if the user hold its down the animation reaches the end of the time line and loops back and plays the last 5 frames of the animation and as soon as it is let go it goes to and stops at frame one. Well i know how to make a button that when held down plays out an animation. And i know how to say when released goes to and stops at frame one. What i dont know how to do is to loop the fire at the last 5 or 6 frames so the user can hold it down all day long and play out that animation.

I have three separate movie clips on the stage, while the mouse is over any movie clip I want the arrow keys (up,down,left,right) to navigate through the frames of that movieclip. The following code only seems to partially work. When I interact with a button on a movieclip the arrow keys only advance to the next or previous frame of the movie clip and then no longer work.

I'm trying to move a movie clip using the arrow keys. It's a very simple test animation. Basically I have a stick character with simple walking animation. It has 3 movement. 1 is a forward walk, 2 is a duck and 3 is a backwards walk. Now I can move the character but I cant keep the animation going. Is there something I'm missing??

I need with a menu witch has 5 buttons moving along an ellipse. When I click on a button, I need to call an "arrow" movie clip, locate it BETWEEN the button being pressed AND center stage, and make sure it's pointing toward the middle. Much like the picture below: I've spent the whole week trying to make it work but I guess I don't know enough about AS2, or geometry to succeed on my own.

I load a movie into a movie clip object and display it. Now how can I tell when the movie executing in the movie clip object has ended? Is there some event handler or listener that I can use?[code]

I've got arrow buttons and a movie clip on my stage. I have an event listener for each arrow button for a MOUSE_OVER event that calls a handler function in my movie clip. The handler functions just call prevFrame(); or nextFrame(); What I want to happen is that the movie clip continues to play forward or backward as long as the mouse is over the appropriate arrow button.
Stage Code:
leftArrow.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, imgBar.goLeft);
rightArrow.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, imgBar.goRight);
Movie Clip Code:
function goRight(event:MouseEvent):void{
this.nextFrame();
}
[code]....
I'm not sure if MOUSE_OVER is the correct way to do this if I want the function to continue as the mouse even only happens once.

I made an image of an arrow and it is set as a button, not a movie clip.
I have made it so one of my scene loops, frames 65 to 85 and added a button to go to the next scene which is at frame 86.
The code I used is
on (release) {
gotoAndPlay(86) ;
}
But when ever I test the scene I get an error saying "Mouse events are permitted only for button instances".
I am using ActionScript 2.0

Basically trying to set a gotoAndPlay event on a movie clip (onPress / onRelease)
I've tried laying an invisible button over the top of the movie clip which did work, but disabled the movie clip from playing on rollover.
I found the following code on a Adobe forum, but don't really understand it.
myMovieClip.onPress = function () {
trace ("onPress called");
};

I have some sendAndLoad code which works good. Instead of outputting something to a text box I'd like to go to a different place in my movie. I've got quite a few embedded movie clips and the path is the following:
pages_all -> action sc copy 12 -> action content copy 13. Within the pages_all movie clip I'd like to go to frame number 13. How can I use the gotoAndPlay function to go to another movie clip.
I did try the following:
this._parent.gotoAndPlay(13)

I have an MC that contains a menu. Within the menu MC I have a little arrow movie clip that I would like to ease to the mouse position when clicked. I have this code on the little arrow, copied from many easing tutorials:
[Code]....
Also, I want the arrow MC to start at a particular place. But when I put _y = 30 (for example, which is where I would want it to start from) it is still at 0,0 - even when I change _y to this._y. What the heck?

Okay...
At the _root I have an instance using an empty clip named mainPageEmptyClip. Inside of that, are various other movies.
Now, at the _root there is a menu which, when clicked, should access one of the layers within the empty clip's content.
The problem here is that I can't discern what the target would be to actually access the clip. The action worked fine before I implemented the empty clip, but now it won't work any longer.
I've tried using the target tool built into FlashMX, but it doesn't list any of the instances withing mainPageEmptyClip - that's as far as it goes. I've tried entering in what would seem to be the path, based on the instance names of subordinate movies, but it does me no good - I'm continually given the error of Target Not Found.
These are the two options I've tried....
_root.mainPageEmptyClip.gotoAndPlay(351);
_root.mainPageEmptyClip.webLayer.gotoAndPlay(156);

in the end of a frame of a movie clip, can i have some kind of action script that makes that movie clip stop, and then play a frame in a scene?
this is what i have-
stop;
gotoAndPlay("Scene 2", 60)
it works, but instead of going to frame 60 of scene 2, it just goes to frame 60 of the movie clip that's still in scene 1.

I've got a 'simple' problem with some actionscript and movie clips. I have a 1 frame movie with 2 Layers. On Layer 1 I have a movie clip called green1_mc. In this movie clip I have another called green2_mc. This animation is 120 frames long, with a stop(); on frame 59. On Layer 2 of the main timeline I have another movie clip called green_back. This is my button. I've put the following code on the clip.

I have some animation (programmatic, I'm NOT using keyframed animation in timeline), and some music I want to play in the background. Once the music file reaches the end (about 30 seconds long), I want to trigger the end of the animation functions.I figure I could either use an actionscript timer to trigger the end of the animation or a keyframe with actionscript that is placed on the timeline near the end of the song but these methods assume knowledge about the duration of the wave file. If I changed the framerate or updated the external wave file, these triggers would possibly no longer sync upIs there some sort of event listener or other detection method for an audio file to signal it has finished playing? Or maybe there is a way to get the duration of the audio file to use in the timer

My movie clip doesn't respond to gotoAndPlay(1) command at all. Here is the situation: The Main.fla has a movie clip instance "Mov1" and the following AS3 code in the first timeframe:
function LoadSWF(Mov:Object, swf:String ):void {
fl_Loader = new Loader();
fl_Loader.load(new URLRequest(swf));[code]......
Once it's loaded it plays once (there is a stop(); at the end).So far so good but... the following code in the button script doesn't trigger any action at all:
Mov1.gotoAndPlay(1);
Any other code in that button works fine, so the button itself works ok.
