ActionScript 3.0 :: Stopping A Timer Once Date Reached?
Jul 16, 2010
I am creating a countdown timer in AS3 and ive found some code and changed a few things to get it to do what I need but I also need to stop the code from running once it the timer has counted down to the desired time i.e 00:00:00:00, as the current code means the countdown timer then startes to count up once its gone past the date, stop the code running once the date is reached ?
Code:
var endDate:Date = new Date(2010,06,14);
var countdownTimer:Timer = new Timer(1000);
countdownTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, updateTime);

I'm currently working on a detailed music media management application in Flash. There is a mp3 player which plays music and has a playback seeker (keeps track of current time for track and a tiny pin that that increases its x position as the track plays). I have a simple play & pause button that does appropriate functionality of playing & pausing the track, but the issue is that I have to pause the Timer associated with updating the playback seeker. The seekerTimer object has a delay of 1000 (1 second), while I'm listening to a track, the timer may have already excuted 600 ms, only waiting for 400 ms till the next timer event is dispatched to update the playback seeker. If I hit the pause button at 600 ms of execution time and I do a seekerTimer.stop(); and then a seekerTimer.start();, the timer does not resume its execution and instead restarts executing from 0 ms. This means that the playback seeker is not updated accordingly.
How can I pause the timer when I hit my pause button (essentially store the execution time), and then resume execution when I hit the play button? The play button doesn't have any parameters to start executing from a certain time. I looked at tutorials online but they all rely on the getTimer(); function, this returns a value of how long the Flash player has been running (from initialization). The issue is that the mp3 player in this Flash app doesn't initialize upon the application initalization (I know its a bit confusing).

I can't seem to be able to correctly set a time in addition to the date. When I just set a target date, all is well, but when I try to set an actual time within that date, the timer jumps to it's completion when run.
I think maybe I'm just not understanding the format needed:
Code:
// Date( year, month-1, date [, hour [, minute [, second [, millisecond]]]])
eventDate = new Date( 2004, 05, 12);
how to enter, say, June 12th 2004 at 8:00 am? This must be pretty obvious, but I'm obviously missing something here (I'm a beginner when it comes to flash).

I did some site searches but didn't see any posts on this, but did find an excellent princess bride quote thread. I also have been looking at many walkthroughs on inserting php into flash actionscript, but can't seem to get what I want working.URL...[code]I will replace the values with a value from a form post in a different page, but want to see if the values from php will go to the swf.It just creates a blank swf. I really like the countdown timer as is, but just want an input page for others to be able to submit a new time to count down to.

What I'd like to do is create a countdown timer to a specific date, but from all the tutorials I've read, I can't seem to find one that will include milliseconds; only a Day:hour:min:sec format.What I'd like is an Hour:min:sec:milliseconds format (the milliseconds whilst considerably pointless, is an aesthetic choice - I'm hoping the frantically changing numbers will display a sense of urgency).I'm using Flash CS4, and the following Actionscript so far:
Actionscript Code:
var endDate:Date = new Date(2012,9,6);var countdownTimer:Timer = new Timer(1000);countdownTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, updateTime);countdownTimer.start();function updateTime(e:TimerEvent):void{ var now:Date = new Date(); var timeLeft:Number = endDate.getTime() - now.getTime(); var seconds:Number = Math.floor(timeLeft / 1000); var minutes:Number = Math.floor(seconds /

I've been using your tutorial for a date countdown timer with great sucess, although now I realise because it took the date from the computer that is viewing it and because the event is counting to an event in India, it would be wrong because up until now, ive just put the date and time so obivously it would be wrong because it would be that time/date of that timezone. Is there anyway I can alter the actionscript for a specific timezone?

coding, create a *******' timer to the exact time. I found billionsof tutorials to countdown to a day, but NOBODY can provide a sampleto countdown to a date and time (i.e. Dec. 25 @ 8PM).I need this to countdown to a TV show's premier. And I'm adesigner not a coder... so there has to be a FLA file out therethat I could snag and just update the graphics and plug in a timeand date, and then it counts down once I make a SWF?

Do you know any way to compare a date to a range of date using the Date class in as2.
For example i want to know a given day (11-12-2009) is among the start and end date of a given range (11-01-2009 to 11-20-2009).

A function I wrote that is supposed to respond to a mouse click event...is not being reached. The following is the code exercpt:
Code:
public function Stuff()
{
txtAreaMain = new TextArea;
var rtmpNow = "rtmp://compName/Toy";
[Code]....
I placed the button in the FLA file directly and named it 'btnSubmit'. The sendMsg function is within the 'Stuff' class and the instantiation of the button object is also done within the 'Stuff' function. The doSharedObject function is called without a problem. I wrote the 3 trace statements just to confirm if the compiler traverses those lines..., and they are indeed printed to the output, so I don't know why the 'sendMsg' function is not called.

I have an mc placed on the main stage that I'm trying to control through a separate button. I want the mc to play until a certain frame number is reached and then stop. I've got the following actionscript on the button instance:
Code:
on(rollOver){
if (mc._currentframe == 10){
mc.stop()
[Code]....
This is not working at all - the mc is not stopping at frame 10, just looping continuously

I had a timeline with 3 sound effects, back to back, with a this.stop(); at the end of each one (...so there's three separate sections of a timeline, with a label at the start of each).... and when I'd play it (from the start, for example), it would play the first sound effect (as expected), and stop before the second section (where the next sound effect was)... yet the second sound effect would trigger!
Even when watching it in 'Test Movie' mode, I'd see that it stopped before the next section, yet the second sound triggered (many frames before the stop command I tried putting more space between the sections... and putting the samples on different layers... yet it ALWAYS triggered the second sample, even though the frame it started on was never close to being reached!

I'll try express this as easily as I can: I have an input text box (call the instance whatever you want). What it does is when you type a word, it makes another movie clip (let's say the instance is MORPH) go to a certain frame. The code is simple, but I'll give it to you to give you a better idea:
[Code].....
check is just a light that turns green if the word is complete, so ignore that. Whenever the MORPH object goes to, say "Earth", it plays an animation and afterwards, it hit's a gotoAndStop(1); code, stopping it at the first frame. What the problem is, say, you type earth, it goes to the EARTH animation, but before the animation finishes and goes back, you type EARTH again and it skips straight to the start of the animation. It looks very rough and bad.
What I want is, say I type Earth and the animation plays, and before it finishes the animation, and I type EARTH again, it waits until morph get's back to frame 1. So yeah, to delay a function until a certain frame is reached. Oh, and another thing. Is there a way to make a button click with AS2? Pretty much when it makes contact with another object, it... clicks (whatever it does to reach the DOWN frame and stay there until the other object moves off).

I have a XML file with a few concert dates. In my flash/AS3 file, I would like to show only the up coming event, relative to current date. Like this:
Event 01: 30-05-2010
Event 02: 02-06-2010
Event 03: 05-06-2010
Today is 28-05-2010, so I need to list Event 01. On 01-06-2010 I need to list Event 02. I have the basic AS3 code for listing the XML working, but I'm having trouble filtering the result.

I'm making my first flash game but I've run into some problems. Here is the game: [URL]. Everytime I reach the next level I get this error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Game_fla::MainTimeline/movecircle()
I also want the timer to stop counting when I die or finish. I've tried
Code:
if (platforms.currentFrame == platforms.totalFrames -1) {
timer.stop();
}
which didn't work.

im trying to make a simple text input field, where a user can input a fixed number of chars (this bit isnt the problem). And can only make a certain amount of new lines. This bit is the problem. Currently a user can keep pressing return and make the text field as large as they wish, and i need to basically stop any input say it reaches 8 lines.
Ive looked at numLines which states is readOnly but does something odd if u set it to a number. What its doing is not allowing my text field to change size at all. I have some code that repositons my text field and a clip underneath as it grows. Defining numLines stops this working which confuses me further:)
Im know i can check against numLines so when its goign to go greater then to stop inout. But im not sure on how to actually stop the input if that makes sense.

I'm using flash CS4 and actionscript 2.0. I have a situation where I need to locate and check the date of an external file (either .exe or .swf) and return that date string to a variable in flash. I then need to display that date to a piece of dynamic text within the flash file. Is there a function within action script that will check and retrieve the file date of an external file.
