ActionScript 3.0 :: Testing A Click Event Target Object's Type?
May 18, 2009
MouseEvent.target will return the target object... but how do I access the specific object type? I know it's probably simple... but it's late and I'm fried. The code below obviously doesn't work. I just need someone to tell me what to put instead of [object MovieClip] and [object SimpleButton]
Code:
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fOnClick);
function fOnClick(e:MouseEvent):void {
[code].....

i have "roll over" event listener and i would like to that works only with MovieClips (without textfields etc.). I would like to write something like that:
if(event.target == MovieClip){ do something }
else { do something else}
This doesn`t work properly.
How to check type of event.target in "if" statement?

I'm trying to dispatch a custom event from a custom class (which implements IEventDispatcher) to another custom class (also implements IEventDispatcher) but I cannot trigger the corresponding event handlers.The classes are instantiated at different parts of the application: one on the main canvas and the other on the back-end (data side) of the app. Neither of these is part of the display list hierarchy and I need them to communicate through events.I've looked through adobe docs, the web and Mook's Essential AS3, but have come up with nothing...

When you click on the button something happens. However it seems redundant to me that in the declaration of myListenerFunction, the event object e of class MouseEvent, actually has to have its data type MouseEvent mentioned.

I have a game where "targets" hide behind trees and when they pop out from behind, you click them and they are destroyed. For some reason though, when you click the tree they are hiding behind, they still get destroyed. I want them to be safe from the user clicks when hiding. Here is a sample of the code I am using:
Code:
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onClickHandler, false, 0, true);
function onClickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
{
[code]....
I tried adding an else if statement like so:
Code:
else if(bullet.hitTestObject(backtrees)) {
poof.x = bullet.x;
poof.y = bullet.y;
[code]....
but that did nothing as well. As you can see, it is not the click of the user that causes the target to disappear, but the hittestobject that causes it to disappear.

I'm trying to add an event listener inside an object but it doesn't seem to work. other OO languages it makes sense for an object to be able to attach events etc itself rather than have some external action do it.Here's an example of what I'm trying to do:
ActionScript Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Player extends MovieClip {
[CODE]....
This gives an error "1120: Access of undefined property MouseEvent." suggesting that I don't have access to MouseEvent from within the instansiated object.What I can do is create an instance of the class from the Document Class for example and then do the following:
ActionScript Code:
newInstance.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, newInstance.mouseClick);

In ActionScript 3 you can declare optional parameters like this:function (i:int = 0, s:String = "", o:Object = null):void { }So you can check if the user passed parameters s and o because you can test against the empty string or the null object if(s && o)...But how do you allow an int to be truly optional? What if all values for i are valid, including 0, negative and positive integers? And what if you want to enforce integer (not use Number?)what's the best practice here? the (...) rest may work but then you can't enforce a certain number of parameters at runtime, nor can you make for useful code completion?

I'm just trying to understand a difference between IE, Chrome and Firefox. I have the following code on a page:
$('object').live('click', function(){
alert('Fired');
});
I then populate the page with some Flash controls (in my case, I'm using Uploadify). When I click on the Flash control, I see the alert in Firefox 4. However, I do not see the alert in IE8 or Chrome (I havent tested any other browsers).

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:
test01.abtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.bbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.cbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);[code]....
It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

What methods do you use to unit test event handlers, particularly if they require information from the event (such as mouse coordinates, or the target of the event)? Is the most common practice to just refactor the behavior into a method that does the lifting while the handler just extracts information from the event, or are there effective ways to simulate event dispatch in FlexUnit or Fluint?

Here's the code
public function onKeyPress( keyboardEvent:KeyboardEvent ):void {
if (keyboardEvent.keyCode == Keyboard.A) {
//DO MY STUFF NAO
}}
Error:
1119: Access of the possibly undefined property A through a reference with static type class.
When I put Keyboard.RIGHT or Keyboard.SHIFT etc. It works fine. I tried it with keyboard.Event.keyCode == 97 and such and it still didn't work.

I have been been testing for keyboard events one key at a time. Now I want to test two keys being pressed or released at the same time. I am unclear on how to do this. Do I need to indicate this intention in the functions parameter
Code:
if(event.keyCode==keyboard.LEFT&&keyboard.keyCode.RIGHT);
isn't cutting it.

On line 27 it picks up the following error... 1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Event. //function enterFrames(e:Event) I've tried this for myself but what are the function parameters I need to mimic the same motion of the bouncing ball?

as you can see disabledAction receives e.target as a paremeter from another function (click function actually).
is there a way to somehow call disabledAction from rollOverHandler ? (so that the code doesnt repeat)

function disabledAction(target:MovieClip):void {
var txt:TextField = Finder.findTextfield( target as MovieClip ) as TextField;

I'm having trouble testing for an object's visibility on the stage without using an event listener. I know this is pretty basic, but I can't seem to find anything online and none of my flash friends are around eitherowing code, what is it that I need to do to activate the function? I thought you could write a function without having an event listener.
function test (e:Event) {
if (square_mc.visible==true) {
trace("square is visible");
