ActionScript 3.0 :: Working On Transition - Strict Mode And Parent

I'm struggling with the transition to AS3, specifically not being able to use parent like I used to. Aside from it making me a better coder, are there any good reasons to use strict mode? If I dont use it, are there any 'side effects' to my swf I should be aware of? Any input on parent and strict mode.

Is there any way to set actionscript compiler in strict mode? I had to check the size of an array in a function.[code]I've lost a lot of time (lenght is an undefined property and if condition was not verified, so function went on... so bad!). Is there any way to force compiler to stop and warn me in this or similar cases?

How do I turn on the strict mode in Flash Builder 4? --update I found something about "Preferences -> Actionscript 3 Settings", but there is no such option in Flash Builder preferences.

I am following a code example in a book and have the final fla and as files, so I know the project works when fully coded.In the book, it tells me I can test the movie to make sure that it is working so far. When I do that, I get the error 1120: Access of undefined property.
The "property" is a component instance. If I take the example completed code and remove everything up to the point I am at, I receive the same errors, so I know it's not a spelling/syntax mistake.I have a feeling it is the Compiler in Strict Mode. But, when I change it to Standard Mode, then I get error 5001: The name of package 'com.foundastionAS3.ch12' does not reflect the location of this file. etc.
note:: attached is a file of the compiler when it gives me multiple 1120s.

I'm trying to work out how to trigger a fullscreen on a movieclip from a button/AS-code in the parent. In the parent, I have a button that calls the function toggleFullScreen(), and here is the AS-code;

Even while publishing in Transparent Windowless mode, I'm still unable to see the background pattern I have implemented in my HTML page, as follows:

I see the background while in design mode within FrontPage, but not in preview mode nor once it is published online.I have also tried adding the following code:

I have a movie clip button with a dynamic text field inside.I am loading dynamically to the stage while a video is running in the background.I also have a fullscreen button (Flash component)on the stage. After clicking the fullscreen button and in Full_Screen mode the static buttons including the full screen button work without a problem, but the dynamic button seems not to work at all. Basically the dynamic button when clicked should change its message to "You have clicked button 1".This works in normal mode, but not in Full screen.I tried btn_cuePt_1.enabled= true; but without success.Does it have something to do with not using the fullscreen events?

I am using Actionscript 2 in Flash Player 9.I have created a movie which preloads then plays a very short animation.When the user clicks an 'enter' button it goes full screen.However, from within Flash the buttons work ok, but when it goes live on the server, when Fullscreen is called, all the buttons stop working. (they are movieclips with actions against them, not actual button clips).

Just run into an odd little problem. My project allows for the user to press numbers on the keyboard to call specific functions accordingly.It all works fine, until the user goes into "fullscreen" mode. When they are in fullscreen mode, keypress actions no longer seem to work at all. Have I missed something out with an EvenListeners? Or have I overlooked something entirely?Here's a sample of how the keyboardEvent is being used:

ive pretty much finished my website(link is below).but there is one issue i am having problems finding articles/solution to;the fullscreen stage function works on Internet explorer but firefox does not go fullscreen when the button is pressed. you can test it for yourself and youll see.

I understand from reading various forums that if you do not embed the font in to the movie the dynamic field
won't fade with alpha. But when I try to enbed the font or setting embedFonts = true the text just disappears.
I have the text now with a tween just to show that the tween is working while the alpha is not.

i've drawn an ellipse sprite and added it to the display list of a container, which is added to the display list of the stage. to move the sprites with the keyboard arrows, it appears that my shiftModifier:Number variable is not working when the stage's display state is set to full screen. shiftModifier works as it should when the stage's display state is set to Normal.

I am working on a simple flash game of peanut catcher.Everything is working fine on my local computer and when i upload the game on server and play the game in normal mode than game is working fine but when i try to play in fullscreen mode the game crashes within 2-3 seconds(i mean game over) specially in firefox and IE.

I have an SWF file with a full-screen button working perfectly. I have added an FLVPlayback component, working correctly.
However, if the whole stage is in "Full Screen" mode, and I click on the button which loads the FLVPlayback component, the screen becomes black and the FLV doesn't even load.
I have tried addind the action movieHolder.fullScreenTakeOver = false; but it did not help.
I m working with Flash CS5 and AS 3

I wanted to make a video player that has normal mode and fullscreen mode. The part I am having trouble understanding is how to handle the video once it gets set to fullscreen. Do I just use the current video or do I get a high quality version of the video to show during fullscreen mode? What would be best practice for this situation?

I have a set of users who run my application in non debug mode. Off late they have been reporting lot of issues. But I am not able to debug as there is no log file.Is it possuible in flex 3 to do logging in a file without running in debug version. I understand trace only works if we run application in debug version.

I'm trying to follow along with a basic animation tutorial online using ActionScript. It mentions to switch to expert mode from normal mode, but says that to do this, I need to click on a blue arrow with a box around it(which I don't see anywhere)? Where would I click to switch to expert mode? Is expert mode needed to animate certain things(I'm working with a movie clip)?

As I'm working on a simple XML photo gallery, I am having a bit of trouble making my Slide class successfully dispatch an MOUSE_OVER and MOUSE_OUT event to the Main class.

When I hover over my sprites, the functions inside Slide.as gets triggered - but they don't pass the event to Main.as as I would have expected.
Strange thing is that the Event.COMPLETE gets triggered inside Main.as.

In actions in my .fla file I create a new object of a class (addChild) which is in an separate .as file. Now, in my .as file I want to call a function in the .fla file. This should be the parent right? So, I try parent.correct(); which does not work. I get the error #1061 (call to a possibly undefined method). However, when I do this:

par.correct();
Everything works. Why is this?

I was writing some stuff today and i realized that variables inside a class are not constrained to the constructor or method scope. In my opinion this is utter lazynes. Scopes need to be fully enforced to force programmers to comply with correct OOP styles and organization.
to force yourslef to comply with the standards, when reffering to the consturctor always use the 'this' prefix and use 'var' for all temporary variables that should be inside the method scope.

I am trying to remove a movieclip from my main timeline but it is not working. you click a button that is in a movieclip that is dynamically added to the stage and it is supposed to remove a movieclip from the main stage. I added a trace to see if it was grabbing the right movieclip and it is. The error message that I am getting is:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

i have a flex app that transitions between 2 states with the toggle of a button. my issue is that the effect of fading only seems to work on the 2nd transition and after. However, for my first transition... going from State1 to studyState... there is no fade effect whatsoever, in fact the components in state1 disappear completely (the footer fills the empty gap where the "body" use to be) and then the flex recreates the studyState (without any fade refilling the "body" with components only in studyState). After this first transition however, going between studyState and State1 working COMPLETELY fine.. why does this happen and how can i make it so that crossfade works STARTING FROM THE VERY FIRST TRANSITION?[code]

I have a presentation using the "presentation" template that comes with flash. I am trying to transition slides with the behavior slide transition options. but I've learned that it works find while going into a slide and doesn't go to the next slide when leaving.So basically I want it so that on right arrow first play out transition then go to next slide.

I am learning ActionScript 3.0. Coming from Java world I can easily relate to strict compilation mode. I think having type safety checks at compilation time makes perfect sense. This makes me wonder, why the compiler allows a standard mode were all the type safety checks are deferred to run time? Is compatibility with older ActionScript specification the sole reason for having standard mode?
