ActionScript 3.0 :: Add Assets Like Buttons Etc To The Xml File?

Jul 16, 2010

I want to add assets like buttons etc to the xml file. Will that change the order in which the existing items will be called but the code?Right now it's this:

<image>#1.jpg</image>
<image>#2.jpg</image>
<image>#3.jpg</image>

It will be like this:

<image>#1.jpg</image>
<image>#2.jpg</image>
<image>#3.jpg</image>
<asset>#1.gif</asset><asset>#2.gif</asset><asset>#3.gif</asset>

In my opinion no change in the code should be required except for adding loaders for the new items.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Can Buttons/assets Be Loaded Externally And Referencing Dynamic Content By Name

Jul 30, 2009

I have a widget containing a number of displayobjects, i.e. up arrows, down arrows, tab 'buttons', backgroundrectangularblocks, sliders, company logos etc.I am currently creating these displayobjects using the graphics class with parameters taken from an external file, things such as fontsize, font, colour, width, height e.t.c and adding them as children of "container" sprite objects for easy manipulation and referencing later can these assets be loaded in their entirety externally, rather than being created using graphics class draw methods (which I want to avoid) as some of the things I need to design cannot be created in pure actionscript very easily (if at all?), and then used or do they always have to be in the library and instantiated from there?

if the first question is yes they can be loaded externally, this question probably isn't needed; however, if I have to put the items in the library and recompile each time a client wants to use say a curved blue up arrow instead of a yellow one and then decides he wants a yellow circle instead then how do I write the code to do the following:-Say on my first ever compile I have 'upArrowBtnset1' in the library, I instantiate it and use the instance name to access it in the usual way using standard code,

upArrowBtnset1.addEventListener.... container.upArrowBtnset1.scaleY = .3 e.t.c

Now if they send me a second set of 'upArrow' graphics they want to use I could either update all the upArrowBtnset1 assets with the new graphics meaning the original set is no longer available to the client and I would either have to hold a "original set" FLA file with the first set of arrowbuttons or I could import these to the library as upArrowBtnset2 and a third set they send as upArrowBtnset3 and so on each time I am sent some new assets; I would then recompile them into the SWF and adjust the references to the new assets within the code. In the code, for each instance of "upArrowBtnset1" I would have to rename them to "upArrowBtnset2", recompile and send it back to the client.

Because I have already abstracted the font/colour/size choices out to an external file, they can change that as much as they like without a recompile which is what we want. The problem comes if they want to use set1 again and haven't kept the original "set 1" compiled SWF. It would be easier to abstract the 'setchoice' also to the external file. The SWF would over time build more and more available sets that they could use by just changing an external variable.

For example, if the designer wants to use set 1 on Monday, set 2 on Tuesday and set 3 on Wednesday I want to make it so they can just adjust an option in an external file to "setchoice = 3" for weds instead of either having to recompile the swf each time or they have to have 3 versions of the SWF for each asset set. The idea is that as more and more assets are added in, they have more and more choices. Ideally, in an external file there would be a list of assets and links to where they are loaded from. (i.e question 1 above).

If I have an external file (say XML) which holds the setchoice option that the designer wants to use (say they want set3 today) my 'generic' code has to be something like upArrowBtn(setchoice).scaleY and every instance in the code where that object is used I append the 'setchoice' as chosen by the designer from the external file where (setchoice) is retrieved from something like var setchoice:String = "set3"; from the external file (I am currently abstracting all the adjustable variables to a configuration.as file. I will work on using an XML later when the principle of external files works (I hope!);

Is it possible to import assets from external sources and then use them in the SWF as if they were in the library? The loader class? Is this just fraught with danger I wonder.

Essentially I am being asked to remove as much as I can from the SWF so that if the client wants to change the positioning of things on the stage or the text on buttons or change the style of the buttons or the company logo they don't have to come back to us to ask for a recompile of the SWF for each tiny adjustment. Inevitably SOMETIMES a recompile will be unavoidable (such as if they want the widget to suddenly be twice as wide (i.e. the stage). My code already handles some of this using stage.stageWidth and then positioning objects relative to other objects already on the stage using this value and centred so that just changing the document properties is all I would have to do and everything else adjusts proportionally. I am trying to make this as reusable as possible with as little effort from myself as possible to save our company wasted time.

After all that waffle, my question is this, if I can't load all my buttons and assets and things externally, how do I write the code for this:- I have a library asset called upArrowBtnset1 and another called upArrowBtnset2. Instantiated with say upArrowButtonset1 and upArrowButtonset2 The code would normally be upArrowButtonSet1.x = 100; upArrowButtonSet2.y = 300; but I need it to be upArrowButton(setchoice).x = 100; upArrowButtonSet2(setchoice).y = 300; where (setchoice) comes externally from var setchoice:String = "set1";How does the code change if the (setchoice) string was named not at the end i.e 'button(setchoice)UpArrow'?

ActionScript Code:
var numClips:Number = 5;
for (var i:Number = 0; i < numClips; i++)

[code]....

I need to do something like, getChildByName("mainTab"+i).addChild(myMovieClip) ? or maybe this["mainTab"+i].addChild(MovieClip)?Is it possible without using .name?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Preloader For Xml File And Stage Assets

Nov 13, 2008

I have a Flash app that shows a map with different regions colored depending on values in an external xml file. I also have a simple preloader that I want to appear until all the elements of the app are ready to be displayed. However, when I use the preloader, the results are the same as if I hadn't use it. My map comes up immediately with no colors, there is a pause, and then the colors come in (as calculated from the data in my xml file). Do I have to have code in my xml loader that tells the user what percent of the file is loaded?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loading Some Sort Of File As A Container For Assets?

May 20, 2010

This is sort of a repost, but because this thread is in the AS3 section the subject is inherently different because this board doesn't have anything to do with Flex.So, I want to put a bunch of assets within one file (SWF maybe) and load it at runtime. Then I want to be able to access these assets after I've loaded the file.As is visible by my previous thread, I have no idea where to begin, but I know it's "absolutely" possible and obviously very useful.

Even if the loaded file isn't an SWF file, I'm fine with it. I would prefer to be able to store vector graphics in it though, maybe even produced in CS3/4/5 (because that's what my friend's using to draw said graphics).Looking forward to hearing from some of you over here--now that the thread has a more general subject.

Flex :: Move File Assets From Src Into Bin At Compile Time In FDT5

Jan 26, 2012

Flash Builder has a nice feature that will allow you to have it move files such as images, fonts, xml files and so forth into the bin-debug directory an compile time. The reason for doing this would be to mock up some data or test pulling in assets dynamically but having them in source directory so you can version control the assets during development. Typically we don't add the bin directory to version control so being able to have the IDE move files over to bin for you is very helpful if you are on a large team.

Is there a feature within FDT5 that will do this like Flash Builder?

Flash :: Flex - Statically Embedding Of Assets File Weight?

Mar 21, 2012

When embedding assets of any size in the following manner -

[Embed(source="../../assets/Assets.swf", symbol="LargeButton")]
public static const ButtonAsset : Class;

it looks like the resulting SWF size jumps up ~2.8KB (in addition to the size of any assets that are actually embedded).

So I have a few related questions:

Is this because flex_sdk/frameworks/libs/core.swc must be statically linked? Is there any way to get around this restriction, perhaps by cherry picking the necessary files and compiling them to a SWC file?? Note that in the app I am writing file size is critical.

Is there a command/plugin that would allow for the transcompiling of vector graphics (drawn in the Flash Professional Authoring Environment) into raw ActionScript 3 ?

Use cases compelling this feature are improved workflow - would allow designers to draw assets in Flash Professional, compile to an asset SWF, and then be able to embed those assets (versus having to take the time to load them at runtime, or going to the effort myself to write them in ActionScript).

Flex :: Buttons And Styles - Creating A SWF File Using A MXML File

There is a problem I am facing at the moment, I am aiming to style the buttons in a way that is similar to the way I can style HTML button elements. However, I could not achieve such look and feel. For example, I could not find a way to define the color and thickness of the borders for each side of the button (top, bottom, left, right), the background color, the margins, the padding, the width, and the height of the button. Also, selector such as hover, active, focus are not available. I was only able to change the size and the font color of the button successfully.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loading Assets From A SWC?

Apr 22, 2009

Wherever I look it says that loading external assets(.png, .jpg, gif) from a SWC is supported. However, I can't find a single example of doing this with anything else than Classes and Components.

I have 7 swf's that are loaded and unloaded by a main swf, a sort of menu system. These swf's all rely on loading in some .png's at runtime.

I made a new "Library Project" in Flex, filled the scr folder with my .png's, set the loading type to "external". Because I don't want the .png's compiled into my application .swf.

But how do I get a hold of my raw .png's from within my classes?

I can do:
var obj:AComponentFromSWC = new AComponentFromSWC() no problem.

But I want to do:
var pic:Bitmap = BitmapFromSWC();

Is this possible or did I completely misunderstand the use of SWC's?

This way I could let all the apps use the same SWC and it is easy to distribute all the graphics as one package and the loaded swf could share common graphics.

How To Get XML Library Assets Back Into New FLA

Dec 15, 2010

I started using Flash CS5. I spent many hours working on a .FLA file. Saving as I went and at one point Flash CS5 crashed during the save. The .fla file is now corrupt. The new .fla format is essentially a .zip file. So I was able to change the file name to *.zip and explore inside of it. The DOMDocument.xml file is corrupt and dead. The DOMDocument.xml is the timeline so all my placement and animation is gone. However, my LIBRARY folder is in tact and has all of my library items as *.xml files. How I can get those library items into another .fla file so I don't lose ALL my work? I've tried creating a new .fla file and dragging the LIBRARY folder into the new .fla, but my library items don't show up when I load the new .fla in the Flash CS5 IDE.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Get SWC Assets With Children?

May 18, 2011

How do I publish and import a SWC in a way that allows me to access the exported symbols as well as their children? working on an action script project in Flash Builder 4. In my SWC I have a sprite called SP_ViewHome. That sprite has a child called mcContent which is another sprite instance.I've included the SWC so that the FB4 recognizes the class SP_ViewHome (and auto completes when I create references to them). But my problem is that I can't access it's child by using the regular syntax for accessing children (compiler error 1119: "Access of possibly undefined property mcContent through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite")

Code:
public class ViewHome extends Sprite
{
private var s:Sprite;[code]....

I can access that child with the getChildByName() function. However this seems inefficient both in terms of development and run time performance.I need to do to be able to access children of SWC classes more easily?

Assets :: One Big Image For Them All, Or Many Separate Ones?

Mar 28, 2010

I'm now writing a simple socket application for my own learning purposes. It will be a really simple BlackJack application.I was thinking for ways to manage 52 different cards in my app. I could make those 52 cards, as 52 images and then, maybe load them into movieclips at runtime. Or, I could take one big image with all of the cards on it, and create a masked movieclip, and then, shift and slide the image's position, so that the correct graphic of the card shows.y question is: which way is faster? Will flash be better with handling 52 small images, lets say 20x40 (in reality, i will only load like 6 of them in the display list, since black jack almost never deals with huge amount of cards). Or would it be faster, if I had a big image with all the cards (~160x160 maybe) and just reused that with different masking, calculated on runtime?

ActionScript 3.0 :: SWC With Embedded Assets?

Jan 27, 2010

I used to be able to create distributable components in AS2 (swc files) containing class code and assets (movieclips). And it used to be really easy.Now I am struggling with Flash CS4 and AS3 and all my attempts were frustrating, as no matter what I try it simply doesn't work. I am starting to assume that maybe it is not possible anymore to do in AS3? Maybe this kind of thing is deprecated in Flash now???

Let's see what I have tried:

1) I started with a new FLA and named it 'MyComponent.FLA'. Then I drawed a green square, converted it to a mc and named it as 'MySquare'. Then I tagged 'Export for ActionScript' and 'Export in Frame 1'. Then I named the class as 'MySquare' and set the base class to 'flash.display.MovieClip'. This is my asset (a green square movieclip).

2) Created an empty movieclip and dragged the asset within it. Then I named it as 'MyComponent'. Then I tagged 'Export for ActionScript' and 'Export in Frame 1'. Then I named the class as 'MyComponent' and set the base class to 'flash.display.MovieClip'.

3) Right-clicked it in the library and chose 'Component Definition'. Then in class field I typed 'MyComponent' and tagged 'Display in Components Panel'.

4) Crated a new AS file, called it 'MyComponent.AS' and typed the following code:

Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class MyComponent extends MovieClip

[code]....

5) Back to 'MyComponent.FLA', right-clicked the 'MyComponent' object in the library and chose 'Export SWC file'. That was ok, no warnings, no errors. Then I just copied this new SWC to my components folder.

6) Created a new FLA and named it 'test.FLA'.

7) Reloaded the components panel, and my new component showed up. Then I dragged it into library.

8) Then I type the following code:

Code:
var test:MyComponent = new MyComponent();
trace (test.visible)

9) I ran the new app and it was ok, no errors and no warnings. The trace statement spit out 'true' what means that the new class is really there, but... I cannot see the green square. But when I click onto the 'MyComponent' in the library, the preview shows up the green square, what means that it IS THERE in the component. So, why it doesn't show up in the stage after the class be intantiated?
