ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamic Text Under Mask Disappears When Tweening
Sep 14, 2008
I'm sure this has been asked in some way or another a couple of times before, and sually the first response seems to be..."are your fonts embedded?" Yes, they are. I am using a couple of different tweening classes (it happens with all of them). Basically what I'm doing is a simple sliding in and sliding out animation via the x and y properties of a movieclip. It only happens to a few movieclips, but some (not all) of my dynamic textfields disappear when doing this. When I click in the area that they are supposed to be, it magically appears. I have even tried creating the masks dynamically to stop the bug with no luck. It is very sporadic, but does anyone know/have experience with how to solve this problem?
Can someone explain why the text of a dynamic text object disappears at runtime when rotated?It happened when I rotated a MovieClip object via actionscript that contained a dynamic text object. So, to test whether this happens all the time, I created a movie clip again with a dynamic text object in it, populated the dynamic text object with a single letter, and rotated it by hand and ran the movie - the letter disappeared.
LOL in a happy, rare accident, I discovered the answer myself. Page 432 of the Flash 8 Actionscript Bible says, "Aside from just allowing text to look the way you want it to look, embedded fonts actually enable your Textfield objects to do some things they wouldn't otherwise do. For example ... a TextField object that uses device fonts (nonembedded fonts) cannot be rotated nor can you change the alpha. But once you embed the font, you can do both of these things."
How: (for dynamic or input text objects) clicking the Embed button in the Property inspector.Note, this will increase the size of your swf. Just embedding the lowercase and uppercase letters from a-z of one font increased the swf filesize from 3-9KB.
I'm using Flash MX to create a website. The user navigates between different scenes/frames using buttons, just like moving to different pages in html (except the "pages" are different parts of the main movie's timeline).The problem I'm having is that on two embedded movie clips there are text boxes which dynamically load html-formatted text files (news updates for different topics). When I run the movie, both of these "pages"/"frames" work beautifully, but after the first time, when I come back to either of them, the dynamic text boxes' scrollbars have disappeared and the up/down scroll buttons don't work. By clicking on the loaded text and dragging I can force it to scroll, so all the content is there, but the controls are gone.
I've been searching forums for a couple of hours on this now and the only thing I found was someone found a similar issue on CS3 which required giving scrollbars instance names (which I did) and then inserting Actionscript telling them to update--and that is a bit beyond me. Is there something I have to type in when the text loads to get it to do that?The script I'm using to load the text into the fields is as basic as it gets (and obviously cut and pasted from somewhere else):
loadText = new loadVars(); loadText.load("history.txt"); //creating the loadVarsText function
I have a dynamic text inside a movie clip. I placed this action on the instance of the dynamic text:
onClipEvent(load) { text = "this is a text"; }
On the movie clip I created a motion tween changing the _alpha of the dynamic text from 50% to 0%.But when movie clip is loaded, it only showed the dynamic text not doing anything.
I'm pulling in some text from xml into a dynamic textfield on the timeline.All is working groovy, until I tried to put a shape (just a rectangle of color) under the the textfield in the timeline. It turns out this shape completely BLOCKS the text, even though the shape is on a layer UNDER the dynamic textbox..
I am making some progress with an interactive poetry projectearlier.Unfortunately I have another problem which I can't seem to solve. In the project I create 49 textfields in a 7x7 grid. The properties are stored in an array. The code I have to do this works as intended.
var instances:Array = []; for (var i:int = 0; i < 49; i++) { var j_inst:TextField = new TextField();
Well...I say it "disappears", but it may just be that there is no longer text inside the field.
I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not. Was it ever a headache trying to narrow it down. I can't see why it would be intentional behavior, but here's the issue I've come across when working in Flash CS4:
When I have a dynamic text field on the timeline with an embedded bold font and then add another text field later with the same font with regular style instead of bold, if I try to update the dynamic text field's text, it disappears. I don't get errors when I try updating the text and I can pull the text back out of it, but it's no longer on-screen.
If I never include the second text field, or if it is a different font altogether, everything works like a charm. Also, it doesn't seem to matter if the second text field is static or dynamic.
I've attached an example. In the zip there are 3 files: The FLA, SWF, and Movie Report from Flash.
As it stands, for my project where I ran into this issue, I'm just using the regular instead of the bold style for the dynamic text field.
I have some dynamic text in an swf, that sits in an html doc, with the width & height set to 100%, in order to have the swf scale depending on screen size.Everything works really well apart from a dynamic text field (which pulls in slide numbers) which disappears or reappears depending on the size of the window or when the window is resized.
I posted this in Kirupa but unfortunately i did not receive any response from the community for 4 days now. I'm thinking perhaps somebody here can answer my long awaited explanation for this bug or phenomenon. I have a shape animation on the timeline from one keyframe to the next (3 keyframes). There is an orange movieclip under that mask with instance name "container". Now if i attempt to attach a movieclip to it at runtime, it will automatically get removed when it reaches the 2nd shape tween keyframe. All my code is in frame 1. Isn't that illogical? I know it works if i place it into a movieclip. I need an explanation to this (if its a bug) and a workaround other than repetitively attaching it from frame to frame.
i have a dynamic text block which is inside a movie clip, is i grouped with other elements.This movie clip sits behind a mask. when i am in the movie clip i can see the text field, when i am on the root level (and the mask is disabled) i can see the text, but when i preview the movie the text IS GONE or I CAN'T SEE IT.
Hello Flash World, Ok, I may have posted this question before but I am still confused. I have a Master Movie Clip that has a Mask over it. By having that mask I can't view my dynamic text box that is scrollable. How do I embed a font so I can view my dynamic text box? (Im using AS2) attach is a file that explains my problem.

I've been trying to dynamically change some text for a titlebar that is behind a mask
However, I find that when I change the text of the dynamic text field (whose containing movieclip is masked by a graphic), the text no longer appears at all.
When i remove the masking, the text changes properly when asked, but when it it masked, the text does not show at all.
I've discovered the joy that you cannot display dynamic text boxes if they are masked.After browsing the internet I found a few things to try, first embedding the font, which I have done, and that didn't work.The other solution involves setting the mask to a display object, which I've done, sort of.I create a Sprite() in code (I use Flex Develop, and never code on the time line), then use the Sprite.graphics to draw the mask, then set my main stage movieClip's .mask property to equal this layer.
i have the AS setting the mask, and my fonts are embedded.. but the dynamic text doesnt mask my other movieclip.my dynamic text is "fly_in" MC with the text field inside. the MC label is: "headerTxt_mask" the sheen is labeled "sheenMC" and put in a layer below "headerTxt_mask" in the same "fly_in" MC then on the first frame of my scene i have:
I have a dynamic text box and i want to mask it but its not working. i remember once someone was showing me something that had to be done to a dynamic text box to get _alpha effects on them and I wonder if its the same thing. Problem is, I don't know what that "thing" is.
I have an application written in AS3 that is loading swfs written in AS2. Most of them work fine, except for ones that contain the old AS2 accordion component. Loading one results in it working correctly, but each one that is loaded after it breaks the previous one (the content no longer shows and the mask disappears). It's not just limited to the accordion, any of the AS2 components that came with Flash Pro cause breakage. I've tried loading the swfs to separate movieclips, tried using applicationDomain, tried everything else I can think of. Rewriting the swfs in AS3 is not an option due to circumstances out of my control.
I have a MC in my library exported for AS called list_item_mc. Here's its contents:A placeholder MC for an image with the instance name img_holder_mcA placeholder dynamic textbox with the instance name list_txtHere's my code Below it I will explain what's going on and what my issues are:
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoaded); var xml:XML;
is it's possible to create a similar effect to this menu:[Url] on a xml loaded text, in Flash. Would I need to create a mask and place it above the text then tween it's x position using tweener? would that work?
I have created a list of MC's with dynamic text via xml to create a list of mc Buttons. All works well as I wanted, but as th elist is too long i want to create a scroller for these, anyway when I apply the mask and test this all the text dissappears, they are there as the links all work but the text seems to have turned invisible, want am i doing worng.
I am creating each mc button dynamically like:
var venueBtn:MovieClip = new MovieClip(); var venueTxt:TextField = new TextField(); etc
I have masked the video clip. The masked clip is working fine. But the Actionscript 3, which contains 2 more SWF external movie clips not loading those files. Once I remove the mask they start working.
I have this text "my text is <b>bold</b> and regular".
I want "<b>bold</b>" to be... well, let's say... bold !
I have a mask layer under which there is a text field.
The text field shows htmlText, and i must embed chars. If not embedded, it doesn't display because of the mask. So the solution of importing 2 user fonts ( one bold and one regular) does not work.
I have simple image gallery, where images are placed one next to another and the mask is revealing only one of them. Now I want to tween position of the images, but when I do that the mask is "traveling" alongside with the images..
