ActionScript 3.0 :: Event Within The Function That Handles This Event There's A Combobox Appearing

I have some mouseclick event, and within the function that handles this event there's a combobox appearing. after the combobox appeared, I want to be directed to another listevent which is triggered when there's a change in the selection, but, I also want to pass the previous mouseclick event for there is some information in that event that I want to use within the listevent handling function.
As I understand, you cannot pass parameters along to eventhandlers, so I was wondering what is the best way to operate in this case. I've read you can make custom events, but never saw an event passed as a parameter, and was wondering if that's even possible.

I came in to flash on ActionScript 3 and when I was starting out just over a year ago I realised how much of a bother finding keyCodes was and changing controls was just as long as had to look up the new one I wanted to use. My solution was to (eventually) write a class that handles all of my key presses and event listeners attached to that stuff. instead of using keyCodes, the functions use strings for their arguments making it easier to see what keys you want to do what. Initially the class only worked for letters and numbers but I managed to make it easily customisable and includes the arrow keys, numpad numbers, space, enter, shift and control keys.
The reason why I wrote this thread was because: I plan on making it a public class (available to anyone who wnats to use it) and b) to see if there were any specific functions that people think may be useful. So far there are the standard key-down and onRelease type functions as well as a function that only returns true once for the duration that a key is down - difference between pressing and holding.

I'm moving on to my next massive programming project and I'm trying to decide whether I should code it in as 2.0 or 3.0. I came across the new click event model in 3.0. Right now it's looking like a pain in the butt to me. So now I have to make a function and add it as an event listener? what the hell? What's the benefit? I understand stuff like this makes AS a more complete language but it's kinda annoying.

I have a question about making a function for two different kinds of event. It's not critical but I would like to reduce my lines of code and just be more efficient. Basically I have a button on the stage called "Enter". I also want the user to have the option of hitting the enter button. I don't have a problem making these two separate handlers for these events (i.e. one handler for the KeyboardEvent and one handler for the MouseEvent):

so today my question is how can we have 1 function triggered by both a Timer event and a Mouse event? 'm trying to avoid having to re-write/re-name a function just because I also have a Mouse event that triggers it and not just a Timer event.
Issue:
I have a addThis bubble fade in with icons on a button rollover, the addThis bubble will fade out after the timer is finished, but I also have a close button in that bubble which needs to use the same function that the timer uses. (want to avoid writing 2 exactly alike functions)
I'm hoping this there is an easy workaround for this like event:null or something.[code]./...

I have a simple ComboBox onstage, with 5 options in it. Each one has a textual label, and is assigned a numeral "data" in the Component Inspector (1,2,3,4,5). I'm trying to get the playhead to move to a specific frame, according to which option is selected, and can't make it work. The trace turns out fine, but the playhead stays in place. (The ComboBox is called my_cb).

I'm using the <s:ComboBox> flex component which I suspect is very similar to the mx one <mx:ComboBox>
What I'm trying to do is listen to the event of the mouse moving between the items of the list. There's a change event, but it kicks in only when the item is clicked/selected from the list.
What event would I need to listen for when items are just hovered over. I tried finding over and hover but couldn't find something to that effect.

I've got this weird problem with Flash in a embed browser in an ASP.NET Windows Application. I've got this Flash Movie that runs in the Windows application and has got a couple of comboboxes. I've added an eventlistener to such a box, but his change event isn't triggerd on some computers. When I click on the combobox it opens up, but when I click on an item in the combobox it closes before he could trigger the change event.
The weird part is that this occurs on some computers, on others it works as it should. And when I load the swf directly in the browser the comboboxes work all the time. So it has something to do with the Windows Application and Flash. All the tested computers have the Flash plugin version 9 and higher (needed for my movie) installed.

I have a movieclip in my library called clip1 and inside it are a combobox and a button called combo1 and button1. I attach them like this:

I hava a custom component and it contains a child icon. If I add a mouse-click event listener to both component(click-listener1) and icon(click-listener2), the event dispatched sequence is click-listener2, then click-listener1. I can understand it. But if I add a custom event to component (listener1), and mouse-click event to icon(listener2), when icon is clicked, the component will dispatch the custom event. In my test, the event dispatched sequence is listener1, then listener2. It doesn't match with event-bubbles rule.
In my opinion The custom event is dispatched in listener2, which triggers listener1. Why event flow sequence is not listener2, listener1?

Step 2 for me is to populate a second comboBox with a particular year from the model choosen from the first comboBox. I know I need to use the onChange event, but am not exactly sure where to write this within my script? I want change the HBox's style when click any object inside this HBox. I have a comboBox component with a CHANGE event listener on it:

Forgive me for this stupid noob question but I want to call a function (loadList) that originally gets triggered after a mouseevent from another function (addToXML) that does not have an event.
The loadList function takes info from a XML var, sticks it into an array which then gets loaded into a tile list and that is working fine.
The addToXML function when called adds elements to the XML var after which I want to call the first function with the event parameter so it refreshes the items in the tile list.
I know it can do this by creating a new array and loading that into the tile list in the addToXML function, but it be much simpler to just recall the function.
I have tried things like

but all the event constants I have tried give me error messges like "1061: Call to a possibly undefined method addEventListener through a reference with static type Function."

I would like to populate a combobox from XML file in Flash. Then, when a list item of combobox is pressed then thumbnail image of that particular category is being loaded in a movieclip from XML file.

I need to return to my original function after capturing an event (downloading something) with another function. The original function needs to return a value, which depends on the downloaded data. So, I'd like to pause original function for the time needed for the download and the eventhandler function to complete it's work, and resume it afterwards.
The obvious way is to set a flag value (both the original function and the eventhandler are within the same class) and make the original function check it until the eventhandler function changes the flag. But that would be wasteful, and my AS is slow enough already:) [other parts of the application utilise some heavy graphics]. Is there another way? Like an event that gets captured "in the middle" of the function? Or some other form of flow control?

The app I want to build is an interactive map for a site I'm designing. In a nut shell, students looking to enter an exchange program should be able to use the map-image (as in, an actual 'map of the world') to preview possible destinations (I've attached an image of the two basic states to clarify).
After an introductory animation, I want a mouse-over to trigger a function that populates the map-image with a series of buttons. I need the buttons to be distributed according to information in an XML file (ie. x/y coords, some information text, and an animation to load upon being clicked). I want each button to call a mouse-over function that loads info data from an XML field and place it in a dynamic text field at the top. Then, I want each button, when clicked, to call a function that animates replacing the map-image with an image of the corresponding travel destination. Finally, I want a button on each image that will clear that image from the stage and call the function that populates the map so the process can start again.
I'm working out of a couple of books on AS3, but I'm a little hazy on how I ought to be constructing this thing. So here's the first place I've run aground: After the intro animation, I want the user to mouse-over the stage and have a second animation play (clearing away the introductory text), and I want the conclusion of the clearing animation to immediately call the map-populate function; but I don't want a mouse-over to have any effect until the introductory animation is finished. Is there an event dispatched automatically at the end of an animation? What is the event listener class?
I'm not sure if I should be storing each of these animations in an independent .fla file or if I should create them on all one timeline and have the program redirect to specific frames.

I know the difference between the two, but I never felt the need to use the bubbling feature. If I want to listen to an event from a deeply nested children, I always use the capture phase. Could someone explain to me why I should rather use bubbling, its advantages, and maybe show me a situation in which bubbling would be the only solution?

and i checked with [URL]...?newspage=6249 and it looked more or less the same, so why is it that when i move my character and when i hold down a key, it just keeps on listerning to that keypress event listener, instead of just executing the other event. So say, i tap left and after which i tap right, it will work just fine, but if i hold left and tap right, the event listerner will still be listening to the left key. So, i was wondering could anyone point me in a direction as to how should i make my code stop listening to an event as soon as another event has been dispatched?
