ActionScript 3.0 :: Getter Function & Event Binding?
Jun 27, 2011
I found this snippet of code when I walked through a Flex3.6 project:
[Bindable(event='currentPageChanged')]
public function get currentPage ():int {
return this._currentPage;
[code].....

I have a singleton class that looks something roughly like this (only with more bindable public properties):
public class Session extends EventDispatcher
{
private var _Id:String;
private static const _instance:Session = new Session( SingletonLock );
private static const SESSID_CHANGED:String = 'SessionIdChanged';
[Code]...
The abnormal behavior I'm discovering is that the event listeners registered through registerOnSessionChange are indeed being called when the session Id changes, but the MXML data binding expression is not updating. I've tried all combinations of dispatching the event during the capture phase, and making it not cancelable, but to no avail. My understanding of [Bindable (event= ...)] is that the MXML should update the url string when the event specified is dispatched, so what am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?
Note: I realize there are lots of different ways of doing the singleton pattern in Actionscript, but unless the way I am doing it is actually causing my problem somehow,

The generally used workaround for this, is to use a regular function instead of a getter/setter. This results in having to have ( ) after the function variable obviously. The question is, can a Function variable be assigned to a getter/setter function and retain its attribute of not needing brackets.
Below is some Pseudo code representing the question:
#########################################################
public class Foo(){
private var prop:Object;
public function get Prop():Object{return prop;}

Getter functions allow obj.meth syntax instead of obj.meth(), I'd like to create an anonymous one of these to return from another function. function get ():Object { } is invalid syntax. I don't suppose Flex offers an easy way to get this functionality, if it's even possible?

There are 3 properties (example 1):
[Bindable] public var name:String;
[Bindable] public var email:Number;
[Bindable] public var address:Boolean;
I needed to have 3 helper methods that will be bindable too (example 2):
[Bindable] public var name:String;
[Bindable] public var email:Number;
[Bindable] public var address:Boolean;[code]......

Here is piece of code:
protected function handleTriggers(raw:Object) : void {
var name:String, value:String, map:Object;
map = {
'onclick': MouseEvent.CLICK,
'ondblclick': MouseEvent.DOUBLE_CLICK,
[Code] .....
Object is generic DisplayObject and raw object contains series of onclick, onmouseover, etc event triggers. It was meant that I could attach event listeners automatically following the properties of that raw object. And it seems like it works, as I indeed can see some listener Functions in listeners property of the DisplayObject and their number corresponds to the number of triggers. But later when everything is put on stage, only the last event handler gets triggered.

Is there some way in Flex where I can tell when all of the data has finished binding to my AdvancedDataGrid? I have a bunch of label functions that run and I need to a busy cursor while the grid gets populated. I then want to remove it when it's all done. And also fire another event.

I have several components where I want to enable buttons based on passing a username to a function. I want to dynamically bind the "enabled" property on a button so that if the "somethingChanged" event fires, a button may become enabled or disabled. But, I'm not sure where to fire the "somethingChanged" event. It's possible that I may need to fire the "somethingChanged" event from several places in the application. Is this possible with a bound static function?
EventManager.as
public class EventManager():void {
[Bindable(event="somethingChanged")]
public static function hasAccess(myVal:String):Boolean {
}}
[Code] .....

I'm new to AS3, and can't figure out why this loop isn't behaving the way it "should."
[Code]...
How can I give each anonymous function a reference to each object represented by f, rather than a simple reference to f each time? Specifically, why is it that each copy of the anonymous function gets bound to a single reference to f? How (I should say why) exactly does AS3 differ from JavaScript in this regard?

Is it possible to specify MXML-esque "binding strings" in ActionScript?For example, I want to be able to do something like:

this, "{myArrayCollection.getItemAt(0)");

I'm moving on to my next massive programming project and I'm trying to decide whether I should code it in as 2.0 or 3.0. I came across the new click event model in 3.0. Right now it's looking like a pain in the butt to me. So now I have to make a function and add it as an event listener? what the hell? What's the benefit? I understand stuff like this makes AS a more complete language but it's kinda annoying.

I have some mouseclick event, and within the function that handles this event there's a combobox appearing. after the combobox appeared, I want to be directed to another listevent which is triggered when there's a change in the selection, but, I also want to pass the previous mouseclick event for there is some information in that event that I want to use within the listevent handling function.
As I understand, you cannot pass parameters along to eventhandlers, so I was wondering what is the best way to operate in this case. I've read you can make custom events, but never saw an event passed as a parameter, and was wondering if that's even possible.

I have a question about making a function for two different kinds of event. It's not critical but I would like to reduce my lines of code and just be more efficient. Basically I have a button on the stage called "Enter". I also want the user to have the option of hitting the enter button. I don't have a problem making these two separate handlers for these events (i.e. one handler for the KeyboardEvent and one handler for the MouseEvent):

I need to return to my original function after capturing an event (downloading something) with another function. The original function needs to return a value, which depends on the downloaded data. So, I'd like to pause original function for the time needed for the download and the eventhandler function to complete it's work, and resume it afterwards.
The obvious way is to set a flag value (both the original function and the eventhandler are within the same class) and make the original function check it until the eventhandler function changes the flag. But that would be wasteful, and my AS is slow enough already:) [other parts of the application utilise some heavy graphics]. Is there another way? Like an event that gets captured "in the middle" of the function? Or some other form of flow control?

so today my question is how can we have 1 function triggered by both a Timer event and a Mouse event? 'm trying to avoid having to re-write/re-name a function just because I also have a Mouse event that triggers it and not just a Timer event.
Issue:
I have a addThis bubble fade in with icons on a button rollover, the addThis bubble will fade out after the timer is finished, but I also have a close button in that bubble which needs to use the same function that the timer uses. (want to avoid writing 2 exactly alike functions)
I'm hoping this there is an easy workaround for this like event:null or something.[code]./...

I'm having trouble updating a property value of a custom class (SubLoader) using a getter and setter. Inside the if() statement of the main fla you can see my attempt to set the percent value. Running a trace() method before the if() statement always outputs '0' for some reason. Tracing after the if() statment outputs an actual value. I can't figure out why the percent property always traces as '0' before the if statement even though I am updating it with each progress event.

I'm finally reading up on commenting code with ASDoc (http:url]....) but the way ASDoc is set up doesn't seem to agree with the way I write my getter/setters.Here is how I write them:
Code:
//I want to add the ASDoc tags here, before this chunk of code
private var _enabled:Boolean = true;
public function get enabled():Boolean[code]...
if I ad the tags where I want them, if I understand correctly, they will comment the private variable instead. Bummer.So, either I change the coding style I have been using for the past three years, or insert the tags inside of my code, making it ugly and less structured. I'm leaning towards option A.how do YOU write your getter/setters so they are ASDoc friendly?

I frequently find myself wanting more granular control of the width/height properties. Consider either of the following cases:
- The DisplayObject is clipped with DisplayObject.mask, but Flash reports unmasked width.
- An image is displayed with a transform cage drawn over it. The width of the cage shouldn't be calculated when determining the DisplayObject's width.
The naive way to solve this problem is to override the width getter of the DisplayObject in question. The problem is that the core implementation of DisplayObject.width is written in native code. If after overriding the width getter, I call overridenObject.width, I get what I want; however, if I call overriddenObject.parent.width, DisplayObject.width ignores my override and calculates the dimensions based on its own internal display list representation.
Does anyone know of a technique to limit which children are considered when calculating width without having to override every parent's width getter? I've tried overriding width, getRect, getBounds, and scrollRect, but none of them seem to be referenced by DisplayObject.width's native implementation.

I seem to have run into a situation where when I push a value to an array held within a singleton via a getter/setter , Flash seem so access the getter over the setter method. Within my command/controller (I am using RobotLegs)
override public function execute():void {
// various line of code here
//Place screenshot image into an array from model for later reference.
model.unitScreenshots.push(screenShot); // screenshot is just a Bitmap object
}
The getter and setter within my model e.g. robot legs singleton
public function get unitScreenshots():Array {
return _unitScreenshots;
} public function set unitScreenshots(value:Array):void {
_unitScreenshots = value;
}
When I set a break point on both the getter and setter, only the getter method is being called, why? I would think that a push value on the array would trigger the setter, not the getter.

I've found two very strange pieces of code in PureMVC's documentation:
[Code]....
(found in Best Practices [English], bottom of page 38 and top of page 39) I've always thought that getters must not accept a parameter (and FDT indeed tells me that "Parameters for getters are not allowed"), so I wonder what's going on here. Is that just an unfortunate typo (meant to be simply a normal function without the "get") or some hidden feature/voodoo?

I'm trying to create a property that can be set by extending classed and read publicly.I couldn't think of a good naming convention for a protected property with a public getter, so I tried to do this:
public function get name():String{ return _name; }
protected function set name(string:String):void
{[code]......
However I get the error (when trying to set name in an extending class): 1178: Attempted access of inaccessible property name through a
reference with static type testing:TestComponent.1059: Property is read-only.
If I change the setter to public, it works fine.

I recently completed a tic-tac-toe game in AS3, using some simple function-based code I had written in C many years ago.Now I'm on a quest to do it the "right way" using OOP techniques and best practices.Everything is now divided into neat little packages, it looks pretty, and the last part of my journey is to get all the little buggers to communicate with each other.I want to move the code which holds the game state from my main to it's own class in com.okaygraphics.model.GameState.The problem is nearly every other package gets and sets these game state properties.I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to encapsulate this stuff, while still allowing my other classes to access it.
1) Do I need a constructor? I mean, my program will never have more than one GameState. If I should call my getters/setters as instance methods, how do I get each other class to reference the SAME instance from their respective packages?
2) Do I even need getters and setters? Perhaps the class could just have 3 public properties? If so, how would I acheive the proper scope with regard to my other classes?
3) Should I assign everything to the class itself using the static keyword? If so, how would I implement and use those static methods?
4) Is this a mistake? Did I totally just program myself into a corner?
