ActionScript 3.0 :: Setting Up Enemy Spawn State Machine?
Apr 5, 2011
I'm currently developing my own 2D shoot em-up and using a book called "The essential guide to Flash games" as reference to create my own enemy spawn state machine where the game keep spawning enemies (game goes on forever till player dies). I attempted to trigger each enemy spawn occuring to the game's level with an variable called "chance".
With my current attempts, the game either only spawns one enemy and spawns no others or doesn't spawn any enemies at all. I was wondering anyone here has any suggestions/tips for this issue I'm having?

i have an old-school background (C, assembler...).
First, if you're writing a simple game and have a state machine that is called every frame to handle attract mode, gameplay, game over states etc., does the AS/pseudocode code below basically make sense in the AS world? I've read a little of Jeff Fulton and others that talk about FSMs and function-reference state machines, but it would be good to get some comment from people here.
Second, if the initgame() function is part of the state machine, it has to complete within one frame, else will get called again before it's finished. But initgame functions can be lengthy - setting up graphics, initiating landscapes, maybe doing procedural generation, etc. By their nature they're called once as needed, not every frame, and are framerate-independent. But if they're part of the state machine, they're tied to the framerate. How to handle that basic dichotomy? How is it possible to perform the initgame() function outside the framerate-bound state machine, or else to guarantee that the enterFrame event won't trigger re-entrance?
Code:
public function Main():void {
public var state:int=1;
initprogram();[code].....

I am a beginner developer in Flex, and I have been using viewstates lately. I had a couple of custom popup titlewindow components that are initialized using[code]...
They both contain view states already, and are very similar so I wanted to combione them into one popup titlewindow and change view state on initialisation of the popup to either the Create version of the popup or the Update.
I thought I was being smart haha, but I realized soon after refactoring my code that, I as far as I know I can't pass parameters to the popup to indicate which state I want, if it is created using the PopUpManager.
Does anyone know how to pass parameters to the PopupManager, or create the ContentCreate component(TitleWindow) in mxml or code so I can specify the view state?

I am currently making a game, similar to StreetFighter,where enemies will come on from the side and you fight them. Now i have the character movement and attacks fully scripted, and have made an enemy, and i make it move towards the character using:
onClipEvent(load){
movethy = 7;
scale = _xscale;[code].....
Now this works quite well and the enemy stops when it hits the character, but the problem is, it wont complete a full attack, instead it plays a few frames of the attack MC. Now i have every attack in a different MC (Frames 2-5) inside the Enemy MC. How can i make the enemy pause when it reaches the character, then choose an attack to use? From there i'll be on my way and can script the hittest and so forth.

My project consists of various external SWF files and also uses SWFAddress. What I want is the internal state of some external clips to set the SWFAddress value.

I have a ball (instance name is "ball") and if I hit the enemy ball (instance name is "enemy") it'll dissappear, and add 100 points. At the same time, I want them to multiply and get faster.The enemy has a follower code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (_root.ball._x>_x) {
_x += 2;[code]....
And the ball has a code that is secret because if I give it to you it'll spoil the game idea.The dynamic text box has an instance of "points".I have my mute sound control done and the ball you control done.

I have a flash map that contains 51 movieClips, one for each state.Sample instanceName for a state (Alabama) would be: S_01
I have a XML record that contains specific info for each state.<stateID>01</stateID
I am trying to link the stateID's in the XML record to the state movieClips that make up the map.var stateInstanceName = 'S_' + stateID;
I was just trying to do a simple trace command to see if I could pull the _width of each state clip to see if I was linked up:
trace(mapInstance.stateInstanceName._width)

It's my understanding that view states can be useful when switching the layout of design elements. Such as, a loading page as one state and the main application design in another state. Is this the correct use of them? Additionally, I have a label in State1 and I cannot figure out how to access that label via actionscript. labelID.text = "New Text"; is not working.

I need to add a rollover effect to the disabled state of a Spark button. This way, users can rollover the button and know why the button is disabled.I think I would have to override ButtonBase's getCurrentSkinState. Is there anyway to test if a mouse cursor is over a disabled button?

I'm using Flex 4.5 and trying to take advantage of the new state groups feature. I have two States (call them readType1 and readType2) that both belong to the same stateGroup (call it readOnly). There are several places where I'd like to do something based on the current state, and it would be the same thing for the two read states. [code]...

I want to fade all the elements of the next state when transitioning from any state.I tried different things but I can't get it to work. And I don't want to manually add transitions for every state.
Something like:
<s:Transition fromState="*" toState="*">
<s:Fade target="*" duration="500" />
</s:Transition>

Which is a pretty small component and I have panelContainer:

Whilst the user is reading the warm and fuzzy welcome note in the welcome state I want to be creating the big expensive panels state so taht when we switch there is no delay. Before the panels state is set panelView is null but I presume there must be an IDefferredInstance floating around somewhere that I can use to kick off the creation of the view. How can I get hold of it?

I am trying to get converted to Actionscript 3 from AS2.In old versions of flash, you simply placed the sound in a keyframe inside the button on the over or down state. Worked fine, but not anymore.I guess the sound must be set up with actionscript and a listener.I understand linkage. how to make one sound on the over state and a different one on the down state?

I'm really new at flash and I'm having some trouble with a textbook assignment. Before I explain my problem here is the code:
Code:
stop();
var defValue:Number = 1;
stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, vetIkke);
function vetIkke(e:Event
[Code] .....
I was doing some assignments in my as3 textbook when I ran into a bit of trouble. I'm trying to make a flash that picks 3 random questions out of a total of 10 and displays them on screen. I made each of the questions movieclips and assigned them all a class (question1 - 10) through Linkage. So the variable "randomQ" is the name of the class of a random question, but how do I get flash to understand that? And how do I spawn that question as a movieclip on stage?
Code:
var Question:MovieClip = new randomQ();
I've tried various alterations but can't seem to find the right one. It's possible I've yet to learn the necessary knowledge in order to make this flash.

I am really new to actionscript3 but this is what I want to do. I want to use the slider in component to spawn or copy a movieclip to the stage in any random placement. For example if I slide my slider across 1 interval and that interval is assigned like X(times) 10 the movie clip will spawn or copy itself and place it self randomly 10 times on the stage.

I have a mini-game where I have three movieclips:The player (controlled by mouse); A random object that moves around the stage (like the arkanoid ball without the paddle and the blocks); A simple power up.The game is simple: hitting the power up increases your scoreThe game ends when the object hits the player.The question is:How can I spawn the power-up (randomly) on the stage area, every time the player hits it?When that happens I want the following events to occur:1) The power-up to be removed;2) Increase the score by 1.3) Place a new power up randomly on the stage.4) Rinse and repeat.

I learned 3D math from the tutorial on this site. I have since developed a game where you are a spaceship flying through a star field.I can get the new planets to be created based on your position, but I can't get them to change based on your angle. this makes it so they don't spawn in front of you, they spawn off in a parallel line.

Im creating a Game and Watch style game. Now with these games the enemies/obstacles spawn slowly at first then increase their amount over time.
I have created a function to spawn the enemy movie clips until a number of clips have spawned, they then move along their Class keyframes until they are either killed or game over.
how I can increase the spawn count slowly over time? Iļæ½d also like to randomize the spawn of certain enemies, how can i do that? Do i make for if conditions?
Here is my spawn and move code.
Code:
// ============ ENEMY SPAWNER
function spawnEnemy():void {
var chance:int=Math.floor(Math.random()*8);
var newEnemy:MovieClip;

can anyone give me any idea on how to make random enemies spawn with this code? The export is evil, for the enemies. I've tried a random function but it just doesn't work. Can anyone take this code and make enemies spawn randomly? Like can anyone actually modify it and the put it in their reply?Also, I don't care whether the enemies come from vertical or horizontal directions. The size of the flash is 550 x 400.[code]

Here is a link to what I mean: [URL]. I am spawing enemies by this right now:
public function newPlane(event:TimerEvent) {
// random side, speed and altitude
if (Math.random() > .5) {
var side:String = "left";
} else {
side = "right";
} var altitude:Number = Math.random() * 300 + 20;
var speed:Number = Math.random() * 50 + 50;
var p:Airplane = new Airplane(side,speed,altitude);
addChild(p);
airplanes.push(p);
setNextPlane();

My character is spawned in the middle of the screen, and i'm not sure how to make zombies spawn from the left and right side of the screen, and moving towards the middle. My goal is to make the zombies spawn automatically, and the character in the middle is able to shoot them down. I've just started working on AS3, but i know that i'll need to make an array to do this, but not sure how to implement this.
Here is my code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.utils.Timer;

I'm making a game where targets popout from behind walls. I have 3 walls, each wall needs to have his own target. I'd like to make the game spawn the targets randomly behind each wall. I'll tween them to make them go up.
I assume I have to link the targets to their own class and delete them from the stage and have the script spawn them instead, right?
