I have a TextField on stage in a as2 version of Flash. Using the properties panel I'm trying to populate with text from an external file.
The text is in a file called about.txt located in the same folde as the swf.This is the contents of that text file:

I'm wondering if there's a "fix" for converting a tutorial that uses an external .as file to using ActionScript internal to the Flash file itself.For example, the Colorful Explosion tutorial runs all of its ActionScript from a separate file that must be present with the swf file to run the animation.

Is there a way to have all of the animation ActionScript run from within the swf file by, say, pasting the code into the Actions panel or other internal method? I just don't want to complicate a project with multiple files and want others to only have convenient access to a single swf file.
I can't seem to remove / unload the external swf files e.g when the carousel.swf (portfolio) is displayed and I press the about button the about content is overlapping the carousel (portfolio) . How can I remove / unload an external swf file from the main flash file and load a new swf file, while at the same time removing garbage collection from memory?
View 15 RepliesI am unable to view the Actions Panel window in a document I've already done a lot of work in. It worked previously - I created an Actions Layer and was able to add action script, however, when I try to open it back up to edit the action script I wrote, neither the F9 shortcut nor the Windows>Actions pulls up the Actions Panel. In fact, when I try either method, nothing happens.

Anyone have an idea on how to fix it? Both computers are Macs running 10.5.5 and Adobe Flash CS3. See below for an example

View 1 RepliesThis is kind of a lame complaint, but any benefit I have gained from upgrading from CS4 to CS5 is being eclipsed by the frustrating change that while I am trying to use the "Find" tool in the "Actions" panel, as soon as I hit "Find Next" the Actions panel closes and I have to close the Find tool then re-open the Actions panel then again to see if it found what I was looking for then re-open the Find tool if I need to go to the next instance. I know this does not seem like the biggest of deals, but is there a way to fix this?
I will also add that this happens when the panel is clicked from the icon. If the whole panel is free floating it works fine, but then it is obviously blocking the whole stage, and I have to collapse it to an icon to see anything. There is also the possibility that it is computer/OS difference since my CS4 machine and my CS5 machine are two different computers one running XP and the other running Vista.
I am using this collapsible panel - link. Unfortunately, I have a problem using it with application states. I have a state where this panel is visible, when I switch to this state, this panel shows, when I click on it, it opens and its content shows. If I switch to another state (this panel is removed from display), and then switch back to the previous state, the collapsible panel stays open, but its content disappears. In other words, the collapsible panel's content doesn't persist through states. Anyone know what the problem is? Or is there another collapsible panel that can work around this issue?

I loaded the ****tail.swf file into an empty movie clip with instance name content_dummy. It loads perfectly but the actions in the ****tail.swf file seem all to be gone.This does not happen with the loadmovieNum method but I would prefer to have it loaded into the dummy movieclip, because it is more manageable ?

I do understand the differance between ssas and as3. Not all, but all most everything I see written in SSAS can be writen into a external AS3 file. This leads me to quite a few questions I'm hoping you kind people can shed some light on for me.
1) What is the advantage of writing a SSAS file over an external AS3 file?
2) Can I write an .asc file in AS3 or do I have to use AS1? Please understand I'm using tuts from fmsguru.com and the books "Learning Flash Media Server" (pdf) and "Programming Flash Communication Server". I'm not a javascript programmer so nothing I do in AS1 seems to make any sence while everything I do in AS3 does. It may not seem like it to you people that are programmers, but to those of us that aren't, AS1 and AS3 are miles apart.
3) kind of off topic, but a security question. I'm not a "hacker" and don't like the jerks that are. My question is on external AS / SSAS files and swf files. When my fla is compiled into a swf does my external AS files remain external? I assume they do, but then what is the threat of the swf being decompiled? In most projects I would do I could care less if somebody had access to my fla as long as they don't have my actionscript files.
I don't know. Maybe on questions one and two I'm getting confused becasue I'm using out dated material. Again I assume that even though fms was built off of the javascript engine it should be able to read and execute my AS3 file. Other wise what was the point of the evolution of actionscript into a fully functional programming language?
I turn to you for help, dear sweet Kirupa Forumites. First, let me explain the problem: I have a flash file reading an external text file for the content. Everything works perfectly for nearly everyone - you click a menu button, and the content text comes up fine. However, a couple of people have found that the text shows up as "undefined". I have checked the player versions of the people where it doesn't work, and it is the same as for those where it does work, so that ain't the problem.
I don't understand why it works perfectly for nearly everyone, but a small number of people have this "undefined" text problem. It seems to be a problem with loading the external text file, but I don't know why. I have a main flash movie, and load the text in the first frame, using the following:

I then have a couple of dynamic text boxes in the main movie - one called ErrorText (for displaying an error message to the user) and one called ContentText (for displaying the content). I use an external menu swf which jumps to a specific frame in the main movie, depending on which button is clicked. Actionscript on the main movie frame for the first button does the following, with the other frames similarly configured:

My external text file is properly configured (content1=blah blah&content2=other blah blah) etc.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can solve this particular weird problem??
All I'm trying to do is load an external .swf file into a precise location on the stage of my existing Flash file. I've spent an hour and a half on this site search and found nothing. What do I add to my loadMovie command to place the file at specific x,y coordinates?
View 3 RepliesI have four games that are very similar with certain names, colours and fonts changing in each. To design these, I built the first and changed the rest - updating what was needed. I then had to go back and add a few scenes to each - which were all the same save for a few word, colour and font changes. I updated game 1, but can't find an easy way to transfer the new scenes to my other .fla files.
I understand that you can select all frames and then copy these for pasting in a separate .fla file. However, this merges all contents to one layer and does not copy the actions for that scene. I also understand that you can embed a .swf of these new scenes within the other games - but this would not allow for changes.
I was hoping that someone could tell me how to copy a scene from one .fla to another - keeping all layers and actions intact.
i have a question. let say i have file1.swf , file2.swf, and file3.swf, how can i link this 3 files together,let say suppose file1.swf is the main content file, but as i load file2.swf, i want the file1.swf get replaced by file2.swf. How could i unload file1.swf at that time, so that my file2.swf will become the main content file?and again, when my current position at file2.swf, and i want it get replaced by file3.swf by clink on a button. so that the i can unload the file2.swf and let the file3.swf become the main content file.

the preloader works, but instead of going to frame 2 of that swf file, it goes to frame 2 of the overall swf that holds the navigation. Does anyone know how to get around this so that it goes to frame 2 in the same swf file as the preloader?
I have a swc file, loaded in my components panel and dragged it to my library. It is a file which allows flash as3 to evaluate strings as numbers as such. My problem is when I import the file

i have a button that when it is pressed plays and loads an external flv file. this part works fine but directly after the flv video is finnished i want to load in an swf file. does some one have an idea how to do this? first show flv and then load swf?
