ActionScript :: Desktop Audio App - How To Build For Win / Mac / Linux
Nov 16, 2009
I am a web developer well-versed in XHTML/CSS, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, and XML/XSL. I would like to write a desktop application for music teachers that manipulates audio files. The app will:
-Input one or more audio files
-Let the user pick in and out points of several clips
-Play those clips at the touch of a button with fade-in and -out
-Render those clips out to new audio files
The application must:
-Run on Windows, Mac, and Linux without tons of extra coding for each
-Have a nice GUI for totally non-tech-savvy people (i.e. professors)
I've never built a desktop application before, and am prepared to learn a new language. From what I've read, an Adobe AIR app built with ActionScript and Flex seems to be the most straightforward. I'm not thrilled about learning such a proprietary system, though. Is this possible using AJAX through AIR?

I'm trying to build an AIR app to convert a group of png images in my desktop to SWFs.So far I can do that using PNGEncoder to convert the loaded images into a byteArray and then using another ByteArray to generate the swf.The problem is I want to compress the images as well and PNGEncoder class doesn't support compression. I triyed with JPGEncoder, which supports compression, but it wont support transparency.
What I'm trying to do is something like the properties menu in the Flash IDE where you can select a png and apply a jpg compression to it. And when you export the png's transparency is preserved. The point of this is so is easy to convert, lets say, 100 pngs into swfs (without having to load each one of them into flash, adjust document size, export, ...)

If I publish using an Adobe Flash Media Encoder 2.5 or a normal client a netstream with codec NellyMoser at 8Khz, the audio stream is incomprehensible for a MAC OS or a Linux Adobe Player.Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new Actionscript Project in Flex Builder, for example: AdobeBug.
2. Start a Flash Media Server 3.5 in localhost(rtmp://localhost/live).
3. Insert the following code in the Default Application file: AdobeBug.[code]
4. Compile and play the file. 5. Run the Adobe Flash Media Administration Console and play the stream named livestream using a Linux or a Mac OS system, but not a Windows system. This stream should be a Nellymoser audio at 8KHz.
Playback starts, but audio is unintelligible in Linux and Mac OS Adobe Flash player.Doesn't happen if I listen the stream using a Adobe Flash Player plugin or a Flash Media Administration Console for Windows systems.

I'm running FMS 4.5 on a Linux system with 4GB of RAM.Whenever I do a live broadcast from the server, the audio does a very strange thing. It sounds, ever so slightly, like an old record player where someone is occasionally (4-5 times a minute) putting a small amount of pressure on the speed of the record player and altering the pitch of the music. All my buffer settings are the default settings. It happens whether I'm doing CD quality audio or dialup 11025 kbps audio. I'm using MP3 for an audio format.

I want to play youtube videos and programmatically direct firefox's audio out to a particular sound card.
Playing raw data 'stdin' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:1059: Sample format non available
Available formats:[code]....
The command-line suggests that it worked, but audio came out of hw:0,0 (the default).Do I need to make my own plugin? Or do I need to force alsa to take 44100Hz?I refuse to use pulse since the memory leak bug makes it crash often.

In TFS 2010 build, I have a new build and I want to call an ant script that builds Flash. How do I call the ant script? Also How can I compile the Flash directly? I've seen the Power Tools and this question but it doesn't help me as we don't have TFS 2008. I can't find any documentation on how to use the power tools except the 1 sentence on the bottom of download page saying to create your build the old way and import it (which isn't very helpful). I've installed the power tools on the agent computer but I don't see any new options in the Toolbox when I'm designing the build flow.

I just started working with ant a few days ago. Right now I have a general buildall.xml which should call each project's build.xml. Because some projects depend on each other, I need to rebuild some other projects which depend on it. This isn't a problem--I'm just setting the depends property of the target. However, ant is always building the dependencies, even when the files haven't changed.Let's say project1 has no dependencies; project2 depends on project1; project3 depends on project1, 2; project4 depends on project1, 2, and 3; and so on.I could hack a solution which looks at project K, and checks if project 1 .. project K have updated files using uptodate. If so, then run the target. This is messy and appears unnecessary.
What is the cleanest way to implement this?EDIT: So I decided to just hack in a bunch of targets, "check_projectK" where it does the uptodate checks on all of its source files, its build file, and the build files of the 1 .. K-1 projects. Due to dependencies, this is always handled correctly. However, this is still a large amount of copy and paste for a large workspace.

Using FDT, when I have a debug configuration with several operations in the launcher chain and the final launcher opens in Flash Player, how can I retrieve the build output from the console once the build is complete and Flash player is running?
It seems that once Flash Player has started the console clears to make way for the application's trace output, but I need to be able to look back over the events and build times for each item in my launch chain while Flash Player is running. Is there a setting I can enable to either log my build output to a file or to preserve it in the console?
Edit: I know I can still read the info when building normally, this question is specifically for building with the debugger.

I ran a simple live video streaming application for the first time with actual users and ran into a couple of serious performance issues that had not turned up during testing. In this instance there was one video stream from a live web cam and used FMLE at 150 kbps using VP6 and MP3 @22k. There were 16 clients and everything worked pretty good for about 30 minutes. (although some clients said their audio and video were out of sync by up to 3 seconds)
Then individual clients would have either the video freeze or the video would continue and the audio would stop. These clints had to "disconnect" and then "connect" again to the application. This happened to all of the clients at one time or another for several minutes. I stopped and restarted the FMLE with progessively lower bandwidth settings down to 75 kbps but still clients were having the same issue.
I eventually stopped the FMLE and used the applications built in publisher at 45 kbps and that seemed to eliminate the freeze/dropping issue. But of course the video quality was very poor and some clients still reported that the audio was out of sync with the video. The server hosting the FMS application is a quad processor dell with lots of memory and network connectivity. The Flash Media Admin Console performance graph showed the total Bandwidth as 3 Mbps at maximum.

Because the player optimizes framerate, antialiasing etc dependent on the performance capabilities of the platform upon which it is running, it was nearly impossible to ensure animation syncronization w/ audio. If the audio were on the timeline you could set sync params to stream, but if the audio is loaded programically forget it .. well until AS3 ..The following code throttles the player framerate to lock step the animation to the audio .. not perfect but the principal works ..

Let me first establish what I want to do:My user is able to record voicenotes on my website, add tags to said notes for indexing as well as a title. When the note is saved I save the path of the note along with the other info in my DB.Now, I have 2 choices to do the recording, both involve a .swf embedded in my site:
1) I could use Red5 server to stream the audio to my server and save the file and return the path to said file to my app to do the DB saving, seems rather complicated since I would have to convert the audio and move it to the appropriate folder that belongs to the user in a server side Red5 app, which I'm not very aware of how to build.
2) I could simply record the audio and grab its byte array, do a Base64 encoding on it and send it to PHP along with the rest of the data that is necessary (be it by a simple POST or an AJAX call), decode it on the server and make the file with the appropriate extension, audio conversion would also occur here using ffmpeg, this option seems simpler but I do not know how viable it is.

The images for animation load okay. The sound loads okay. But the animation images need to be inserted in coordination with the sounds, which is difficult using only the ears There is a visual graph of audio levels in the library window, which I have seen appear in the timeline also but only momentarily. I do not know how to keep the audio graph on the timeline so as to know where to put the images. I can keep the graph open on the little library window when it is open but not on the timeline. how to keep the graph open on the audio track while I work on the image tracks.

My server is streaming binary audio data (mostly mp3 files) to a client (a browser). This client stores the audio data in memory.
What I'm looking for is a flash audio player that I can input the binary audio data so that it can play the audio file.
Preferably, the flash client is merely a bridge to Javascript so that I can handle everything in Javascript and simply use Flash's audio features, but this is not a requirement.

I have a single audio file, I'd like to avoid cutting it up.
I know I can use the sound class, mySound.play(150), to start at 150ms but haven't come across a way to stop the audio say after 500ms or at 650ms.

I'm looking for a (free) flash player that I can embed in my site and use to play a .m4a (.mp4 with AAC audio) file that will be obtained using a URL (i.e. it's not local to the server hosting the web page).I've tried searching on google for one, but either I'm searching wrong or no one has made such a thing. Ideally this would be very simple (small user interface with play button and maybe a progress bar) and it would be easy to have multiple instances of on an html page (can create the player with an <object> tag).

I was wondering if anyone could help me get some information on audio limitations in flash. Is it possible to have audio "scrubbing" that allows you to hear the audio as you scrub? Currently the only way I know to do this is by having it on the timeline, and set to stream. Using this method seems to be causing more issues than it solves. Preferably I would just like to load the audio in dynamically and then scrub through it. Is it possible to use that method and then still retain the ability to hear it as you scrub through it?I am having with the audio on the timeline. The main issue with this is that I have to manually add frames to the timeline, in addition to that I can not dynamically load the audio through xml. Well not that I know of.I think the best route is probably loading in the audio dynamically.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a tool I could use to compile a swf from the command line.I got a project on my plate right now that calls for a game to be altered every day with a new configuration, features, etc.Thing is that the list of possible things that could be in there on any given day is quite large, and the assets each will need are big as well.So I'm trying to find a solution that will load the AS files, images, etc. for just the features that will be enabled everyday...without having to spend each day compiling a new swf from the authoring tool.

Flash has become an international standard for video and sound-media in web-pages. Allmost everything that share web-pages have Flash on their pages, Not everybody in the world use Windows and not everybody in the world use Internet Explorer. I was very glad when Adobe say they will really start to support Linux with Flash 10 since the earlier version 8 and 9 was crap on Linux. But its still not good. Flash on Linux eat up almost all available memory og suck 90% CPU. If i diable Flash the i have no problems. This happens the same on different Linux distro and on different web-browsers. Are Adobe going to start to really support Linux or do Adobe just doesnt care? Even Microsoft have startet to support Silverlight on Linux, but it took several years for Adobe to think in these ways! Its better for us to know if Adobe want to support us or not. Then its easier for us to deside if we are going to support Adobe.

is it possible to change text and images in a fla file without ever opening it up and then making the swf via command line? I want to make a flash template and save the fla. Then be able to update my text and image name and convert it to swf. I have one template but tons of different text options and background images. It would be nice to be able to copy the master.fla twenty times and just change the source code (will do this from command line) and then convert to swf (via command line).
