Actionscript 3.0 :: Listeners On A Parallax - Objects Which Are On The Middle And Front Layer Are "blocking" The Sprites
Aug 27, 2009
I've made a parallax scroller consisting of three layers (actually each layer is a movieclip). On the bottom layer I have attached some sprites which I want to be clickable. The problem is that objects which are on the middle and front layer are "blocking" the sprites so they can't be clicked. I've googled for nested listeners but haven't found a solution yet.

I am having a problem. I created a UILoader and that UILoader loads an image. but when you click on a part of the image it will have to trigger another event.I tried to put a sprite or button in front but it won't work.

I'm working on a charity project that needs a parallax. I followed some tutorial and got the parallax and page zoom out working. The problem is I'm not sure how to stop the parallax from moving when I click on the MC pages on the map. They are marked as Village1 , 2 and 3. The pages AS3 scripts are under parallax-level3 MC. Attached are the current working files. [URL]

I if create a sprite, and that sprite contains numerous child sprites (which themselves also contain child sprites), do I need to worry about garbage-collecting everything, or just the parent sprite? What if the child or grandchild sprites have listeners attached?
For example, let's say I have a class (a subclass of a Sprite) that creates a screen in an application.That screen contains numerous Sprites for all of the UI affordances on the screen (e.g., buttons, drop-down menus, textfields, etc.) Many of those sprites have event listeners on them.So, in my application, I have this:
var myscreen:MyScreenClass = new MyScreenClass();
this.addChild(myscreen);
Later, when the user is done with that screen, I remove it:
this.removeChild(myscreen);
myscreen = null;
Is that all I need to do? Or, do I need to go recursively through myscreen, removing all it's child Sprites and Event Listeners?In other words, if you GC a parent, are all it's children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. also GC'ed?(For what it's worth, I'm using weak-references in my event listeners...)

In AS3 on Android is it bad from a performance perspective to attach mouse event listeners to individual sprites rather than to the stage? I am writing an app for an Android phone using AS3 in Flash Builder. The app has multiple screens that respond to user touch. The screens are arranged in a hierarchy and show list data so that when you click on an item in a list you are presented with a new screen with a new sub list on it.
I have been using an event listener to detect mouse / touch input and based on something I read that indicated that performance is much better if you keep the number of objects you are listening to to a minimum I have attached the mouse listeners from each screen to the stage object.
This all works fine but I am finding that as I move between screens (and they get popped or pushed onto the dislay stack) I have to keep track of alot of adding and removing listeners to the stage object. If I don't then windows higher up the hierarchy than the current screen keep receiving mouse events.
If I used listeners attached to sprites in each window then when the window was removed from the display even though it is kept in memory (ready to be popped back when a child window is closed) it won't receive any mouse events....
Performance doesn't seem to be impacted using listeners directly on sprites when using my HTC phone to test with, however I obviously don't know what it will be like on other phones. Does anyone have any experience either way or a view on the best approach?

Is it completely impossible to put movieclips and sprites underneath the 3D layer?Eg, you can't load a swf with 3D content and show it on top?

Before I started armaturing, I added 200 frames, but I only needed 67.. Now I cannot remove the frames in front of the armatured layer! I can't delete, and if I push it backwards it all just compromises and goes really quick. I cannot move poses, nor can I cut/copy them.

How can I implement this? I tried to use: (this.numChildren - 1)But it doesn't work. I want to use this code because I have 8 boxes, each are 100px X 100px. You hover each box and they flip over but the "backside" of these cards are larger in both length and width than the front. When they flip over they overlap the neighbouring card. I'm looking for some sort of script so that I can tell each card to align itself above the other cards on the stage.

I don't understand how it's possible to have a lot of objects on the stage and be able to manage the motion tweens with all of them, but ALSO manage which objects are in front and which are in back of each other. I have a military type animation and there is a lot of action going on, and there are times where I need some of my guys to be in front of objects, and times when they need to be behind.
I don't know how to manage the objects in regards to layers and motions in a way so I can get the objects in the order I need them to be (like which item goes in front of the other).
Does anyone have any tips or a way that I can manage my objects and motions and be able to sort them on the stage so that I can arrange the objects how I need them to be in regards to placement and which should be in front of other objects?

Say my flash project has an object A. In object A is an event and it's corresponding listener B. How do I get listener and event B to function in my flash project? I remember it something to do about "focus", right? Or am I completely off target, ha?

I was just wondering--and it's probably an obvious question really--if I make an object null and that object had one or more event listeners registered, are the listeners removed?
for example:
Actionscript Code:
object.addEventListener(Event.SOME_EVENT,callBack);
function callBack(evt:Event):void
{
object = null;
[Code].....
In this case have I removed 'object''s listener when I made the object null?

I'm moving two objects accross the stage at different rates using the same function:
Code:
function moveClip(clip,speed){
clip.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,moveIt);
function moveIt(event:Event) {
[Code]....
In AS2 I'd just use dot notation as above and it would work from anywhere or perhaps _root.red....
I've tried root. stage. childbyname Not sure where to from here.

I'm currently working on a nav bar but I've run into a questionable situation. There are several links in the menu, and for each i'd like a mouse event on over and on out. Do I have to specify both of these events for each link, or is there an easier way to do it that I don't know about? Can you apply event listeners to multiple objects/functions?

I have a parent SWF (Parent) that handles user navigation between multiple children SWFs (Child_1, Child_2, Child_3). How do I add event listeners to the navigation buttons on the children SWFs so that the user can move laterally between Child_1, Child_2 and Child_3? I can think of two options but can't get either one to work:
1) The parent SWF sets up the event listeners when it loads a child. So, I use a loader on Parent to load Child_1 and in Parent add eventlisteners to Child_1.myNavigationform.myButton.
The problem here is that the Parent is only handing the loader instance and I can't think of how it would drill down to the individual objects within Child_1.
2) Child_1 adds the event listeners to its own objects. This just reverses the problem. Child_1 has no problem accessing its own buttons but when a user clicks them it has no way of accessing methods on parent so that Child_2 can be loaded.

I am creating a site with lots of big scrollable text-boxes in it. Each text-box object contained some text, and two buttons to scroll up/down with. The scroll buttons each had an event listener so the text moved when you clicked them.
These text-boxes were stacked on-top of each other with all except one having an alpha of 0. If I wanted to change which text-box is active I move it to the front and call a small TweenLite animation.
To the left (outside of the text-box objects) I have an object similar to a menu. It also has about 12 or so event-listeners (one for every button).
This turns out cause A LOT of lag an it's very troublesome for my laptop to run it. reduce the number of event-listeners on the stage and also the amount of text-boxes.
What I was thinking was to add the text-boxes using AS so I only have 1 on the stage at a time but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I also thought it might be better to just use 1 big event-listeners and from mouseX and mouseY decide which button the user is trying to push.

I see this type of apparent magic in all sorts of AS3 code, but here is a reduced example:
[Code]...
As indicated in the code comment, the loader variable should fall out of scope after the URLLoaderExample constructor. However... it still seems to be kept alive (not garbage collected) somewhere since the onComplete listener/handler is able to receive it cleanly. Where is the magic/hidden/global reference to loader that keeps it alive so that it can complete it's load operation, and then be handed to the onComplete listener/callback? Can this reference be seen somewhere?
To help with context... as a similar example, I know that the loader instance will have the onComplete listener registered. I also know I need to be careful to use removeEventListener at all times (?) to avoid potential memory leaks resulting from stranded listeners. What concerns me is that I don't understand where the magic loader reference is and whether (or when) I need to clean that up.

I'm trying to think of the best way to add event listeners(mouse events) to an invisible object which is quite large. A straight forward way I can think of is probably setting the object's alphy property to 0. However since that object is very large, it will probably have a huge impact in performance. Setting invisible to flash however, will stop it listening to events.
e.g. I have a massive area 4000x4000, but I only want the 2000x2000 area to listen to events.
Other methods I can think of is to have the smaller area in the layer below the big area, covering it from view, though I'm not sure if the lower layer can pick up events? another way is maybe just have the big area listen to events, but in the handler I'll write some code to check if its within the boundary of the smaller area.

Say I have a flash project, with 3 layers (a, b, c). Layer C is the background, and A has a couple of shapes that masks B. Now I'm just wondering if there's a way to add my objects (MovieClips) to the stage using AS3 and still maintain the masks coming from A, seeing as merely putting my code in Layer B doesn't do the trick

I'm creating a number of dynamic text field objects in my Actionscript, but it looks like its being rendered on the wrong layer. I've written the actionscript in the first frame of my 3rd layer (which is masked), but the objects that are rendered dont appear to be affected by the masking effect (that does work with static objects). Is there a way to define programatically which layer an object is rendered in? Something like layerNo.stage.addChild(object)?

I have used buttons elsewhere in my project but this time when I use the same script I get the following error:
Symbol=gallery_button_vir_oak_tree_down, layer=Layer 1, frame=1, [code]........For some reason the project I inherited is set on an older version of action script (v1.0). So, I have to create the scripts on the objects and not on the layer.
