Actionscript 3.0 :: Memory Handling - Crossfading Loaded Swfs?

I have a huge memory handling headache in a project I am working on. This is basically what the program does. I have a main shell swf that loads a xml document. This xml document points to a interface swf and many content swfs. The interface swf has my container, buttons, and preloader. The content swfs holds images, audio, and other interactions.

My shell loads a content swf and adds it to a container movieclip with in the interface swf. When a new content swf is loaded, it needs to crossfade on to the old swf.Each content swf is set up as such: all of the content is in a movieclip that is exported on frame 1. There is also a large string of text that sits on frame one that is loaded into the interface swf.

1 . I can't figure out how to load / unload the swfs to set them up for garbage collection while still crossfading them when they load.

2 . When I built a test to see if the swfs would unload correctly, It would not unload any bitmap data within the swfs.

My current code is below. This works fine functionality wise but nothing is removed from the memory. I can't figure out how to add an unload script without breaking the crossfade.

I'm using the Flash 9 AS3 Public Alpha IDE. I'm loading a suite of 256 external png images using the Loader class. There are multiple "suites" of these images, but once the .swf starts and a couple of settings are loaded, only one of the suites actually needs to be loaded for that session. Only a small handful of these images are displayed at a time, but this handful changed rapidly. Images are quickly loaded, animated, unloaded, etc. Currently I'm using the Loader class to load the images whenever I need them and then I remove them from memory when I'm done. Because they are used so often, and without much forewarning before they become needed, this solution is no longer effective.

If I place all of these images in the Library and setup their linkage properties individually, everything works fast and efficient loading them with getDefinitionByName, but this is not practical to have to recompile my .swf file everytime the images change (not to mention setting up the linkage for 256 images is very tedious). The other complication is that multiple classes that are not directly connected with each other need access to these images, which means the images need to have some sort of global access (like they with getDefinitionByName). most effecient way to load all 256 images into memory and then give them global access to be *quickly* reproduced, duplicated, multiplied and animated by any class?

I have a main fla file which loads an external swf into an empty movieclip on the main timeline which works fine but I want a button in the external swf to load another external swf into another empty movie clip on the main timeline.eg. start.swf loads UKEIAMap.swf into (empty movie clip within start.swf) MapLoader_mc then a button havant_b within UKEIAMap.swf needs to load HavantProjectSheet.swf into (empty movie clip within start.swf) ProjectSheetLoader_mc without unloading UKEIAMap.swf

CS3 Preload Multiple Swfs Into The Browser Memory Cache?

Flash CS4 using AS 2.0 for this.

Here's a simple problem I am having. I have a website made up from multiple swfs. Which open up over the index swf.

What I need to do is load 4 swf files into the memory so the transition between the page loads is smooth. The swfs are only a few kb in size but the delay in loading these (1 second) makes the transitions look very untidy. Once i've clicked on every section then the flashplayer has them stored in the cache so they run smooth, is there anyway just to load these in before the start page has loaded.

I have developed a touchscreen application that works perfectly fine except for the memory issue. Basically, the touchscreen app works kinda like a website with navgation on the side and content displaying next to it. I separeate each section into external swfs, and load each one up when it is needed, thinking it would reduce memory used on the pc. But unlike actionscript 2, AS 3 would not remove the external swfs from the memory. You can remove it from the stage and you won't see it, but the swf will still stay in the memory! So... as you navigate through the app, loading up all these external swf, even I do loader.unloadAndStop();, the swf is still there, and they just keep piling up in the memory as you navigate from the app. After leaving the touchscreen for a day or 2, having all these users naviage through it,  all the external swfs will just completely consume all the resources and freeze the pc.

I have a problem in that i have a holder swf which loads in other swf's externally. My problem is that the holder loads all the movies in correctly but the memory usage of the swf just keeps going up and up even though i am trying to remove the movieclip after each has finished it's run.

I have a "photo" gallery that loads numerous SWFs through xml, one by one on click. All works fine. All my SWF work fine stand alone. But when I load them into the player, many swf dont work properly.in example, I have textinput textfields in many of the swfs, which work fine on their own but not when loaded into the player. Then I have a word search game that works fine when alone, not when in player. I can see there is something as my mouse cursor changes into the "button finger", but nothing visual.

All drag and drop assigments work fine etc. I have no idea whats up. I have receantly switched to as3 and in as2 there was _lockroot declaration that solved similar problems, but now in as3 (where it supposedly should be automatic) it doesnt work. As it seems that it cannot recognise it own stage value, or selection_focus when loadedinside another swf through xml.Using cs4, as3.

Flash :: Unloaded AVM1 Swfs Trace Out As Unloaded But Memory Is Not Freed For The AVM2 Machine

I have a large project built in as3. Part of its main functionality is to load and unload various as2 swfs. The problem is that the memory ins't free up once they are unloaded.

I have access to the as2 swfs code base and destroyed all objects, stopped and killed timers, listeners, removed from stage, destroyed all the MovieClip.protoypes that were created. They look to be clean as far as the AS2 debugger show no remnants of the object after the destroy function is run. In AS3 i've closed the local connection, cleaned all references/listeners to the AVM1Movie and ran Loader.unloadAndStop(). The trace out in flex says the swf was unloaded but looking at windows task manager the memory usage never drops to when it was before the as2 swf was loaded. Each as2 swf can take up to 80 megs each time it's run so memory gets eaten up fast and loading and unloading a few as2 files.

At this point if the AS2 swfs are unloaded the only thing that I can assume that could be left is MovieClip.prototype and/or _global, _root variables add during the AS2's run time. But i've gone through those and can't find anything else that might be sticking. Has anyone ever seen problems before with the AVM1 machine not freeing up its memory?

I am trying to make a sound crossfading between the loops (an example would be: same as in a "Winamp" media player you toggle the Crossfading function in a Modern Skin and select a duration of it). Say I got a loop of 10 seconds, altho it is not perfect as its cut of the song without a proper editing tool. Any way I could accomplish it by using the ActionScript?

The end result is going to be a "photo-stack" with each image layered on top of one another, all cycling through the list of images. So container 1 would start of showing image 1, then image 2, and so on. Container 2 would start with image 2, then 3, and so on. One the container gets to it's final image, it loops back to the first image. I've duplicated all the necessary functions and duplicated all required variables with different names so there shouldn't be any overlap, however when I run my SWF, only one of the galleries loads. If I try and load the galleries as external SWF's, only one gallery appears.

I'm using the code below for loading my flvs. What kind of function and parameters are needed to make sure the video is cleared from memory? In order to stop the sound, I'm using SounMixer.stopAll() which works fine to stop the sound, but when I unload the video and stop the sound, I can see that memory is still being consumed. I've been reading about nulling a netstream, but since I'm loading my flvs locally for this project, how do you ensure that the video is fully unloaded from memory when not using a netstream?This example dynamically creates an FLVPlayback instance. To run the example, follow these steps.

I'm making a game for the browser that has a lot of assets, but not all of them are needed at once. I'm deciding whether to embed my assets at compile time or load them at run time. I'm not concerned about loading time -- only the performance of the game during run-time.

If I load these assets and store them into memory for eventual use later in the game, will they consume system resources just being latent in an AssetLoader? Will that affect performance?

If I embed these assets, will they consume system resources just being latent in the compiled SWF?

Is there a difference in performance between these 2 methods?

Is this at all possible? I just finished re-building my entire portfolio site in AS3 because I can't change the frame rate for loaded content in AS2. Now I find out after completely rebuilding this thing that AS2 content gets stuck in Flash Player 9's memory and won't erase on Loader.unload. All my work from years back is in AS2.

Using ActionScript can I do with my game, which is running in a browser, verify that the user already has the files needed to run the game installed on your computer? If he had these files do not need anything else that was born and can play the game immediately. If he did not have the files, they would be loaded so that the browser does not erase these files. So when he returned to play the same game day after,as the files already on your computer, nothing need be loaded.How do I remove one of the main memory image that was loaded using the Loader class? I tried using the unload () method but nothing happened.

In Flash Actionscript 3, if a function is defined in Frame 1 of a flash animation and the animation loops, does it store another version of the function in memory upon each loop.

I've made a simple portfolio web site which loads a swf file containing the navigation at the top and then the navigation loads individual swf files containing full page images.The problem is the full page images are distorting very slightly when they are loaded in. I've attached two images, the first image (picture2.png) is how looks when I just open the image's swf file, and the second image (picture3.png) is how it looks after its loaded in by the navigation.

how to unload the swfs in as3 once you click a button to load a new one.

My file works great, with the exception of the videos playing over each other. slight bummer.

I have five buttons that each pull an external swf that is controlled by an xml file. If there were not sound it would not be an issue, but the sound overlaps if you click to the next link before the first video finishes playing.

I uploaded all the files here, including two test flv files. the files were too big to upload to the kirupa forum.

I recently changed the setup of my project from only having one SWF, to loading in my main SWF through a preloader. I'm facing a problem of scope. My old code for targeting things no longer works. This is it.

What would I change this code to in order to target the exact same spot in my loaded SWF? I should add that all my code is in an external .as file, which is set as the DocumentClass for the loaded SWF. I've tried both "this.parent.parent.contains" and "this.contains" Neither worked.

Is it possible to keep my menu on top of externally loaded swfs? I believe it should be but I just cannot figure out how to do it. I have searched around and I believe I should use something like addChildAt but when I try to use it in the main menu actionscript my external swfs do not load anymore.. My menu is sitting on the main timeline as movieclip and the externally loaded swf overlap my main timeline completely completely covering my menu...
