I have a page with a "Tip of the day" section.I have at present about 30 different tips.I would like to set that section up so that every time the page loads a different tip appears, in random order.

I have found several answers on how to pull the link from the XML , which is working fine, and have seen several post about linking directly to a website when you click on the image icon, but I canâ€â„¢t find a way to make the content text link. I have tried adding a onRelease function for "theText" but when I run I dont even have the ability to click on the text (mouse over only works on the image, not the content)

I'm trying to build a "product spotlight" area on my site's homepage. There are a lot of products, so I want to display them randomly, and I want to specify an image, link and text in the XML file.
I've started by using the XML gallery on kirupa.com, but that didn't quite do what I wanted. I found a little workaround when I found a random XML image loader on another site, and used that.. all it would load was an image, so to make the product photos be links and have special text I made each photo a .swf instead of .jpg file and added a button link over the whole image. This way works, but we are adding more and more products and it's becoming cumbersome. There will be about 50 different products randomly changing.
It would be perfect if we could just set up the xml like
<list> <product> <image>whatever.com/product1.jpg</image> <url>whatever.com/product.2htm</url> <title>Buy this now for $3.50</title> </product> <product> <image>whatever.com/product2.jpg</image> <url>whatever.com/product2.htm</url> <title>Buy this now for $4.50</title> </product></list>
And then the flash file would have the link on the top layer and pull the url from the xml file, bottom layer would load in the image, and in the middle we'd have the title, maybe I'd have it slide in with a basic tween or something like that. And then, there could be like 50 different images listed in the xml, and it would display one randomly for like 10 seconds, then fade into a new one, and just keep swapping it out forever and ever. I really want to do it this way because I can update the text or images without having to build a new .swf file every time something changes.I know how to do some regular basic flash stuff, but I never got into the hardcore actionscripting, so I'm kinda stumped. Anyone know how I can pull something like this off or know of freeware example that I can use and build off of?

If I have an HTML splash page that has a embedded SWF consisting of a preloader (for itself) at the start of its timeline, then a 5 second hold (no new Flash material), and then have a number of images on HTML page in a <div style="display:none;visiblity:hidden;">, all set with sizes of 1x1:2) Does the SWF get priority with the download, or are both the SWF and images given the same download priority?3) How would I preload (on the splash page) a second SWF that is used in the inner page? Would I embed it as usual, but use the CSS display:none, and set the size as 1x1, as I do with images?
4) Is there a better way to preload the SWF, where the main (splash) SWF actually loops while it downloads the second swf? Would I be loading that second SWF into the splash SWF on a different document level? What ActionScript commands would I use for that? loadMovieNum()? Would I put the incoming second SWF off stage, or set its visibility to hidden?I figured I'd preload some of the interface/common graphics for the inner HTML page that the visitor is brought to after the initial Flash splash page. Even without a preloader that would loop until all the content is loaded, I figured I could just have the splash page hold for a bit, and give the hidden <div> images a chance to load in the background. Obviously, using that method wouldn't guarantee that all the imags load, since it's unmonitored, but would at least give them a bit of a head start
if there is a way to allow the page content to still be clickable with a flash animation the size of the webpage over it. I have a flash animation the size of my page that is a loading wave that drops to the bottom of the page after a few seconds but even though its dropped and the page content is visible.. i cannot click anything.

I tried to save it as CS3, as CS4 alows me to do so and even that does not work.Details: I am using Dreamvewaver CS4 and Flash CS4 to build this site, could there be some type of an issue with DW4?

This one is not working for some reason. I published it in the same way I did the first from Flash Professional. When I post the slide show on the home page it works. When I take the slidshow from the homepage and put it on the second it does not work.

View 3 RepliesI'm working on a banner advertisement but I've hit a bit of a snag. First, here's what I'm trying to do.
1 - Eight MovieClips are added to the timeline. They are based on a MovieClip in the library which contains 1 dynamic text field.
2 - Content is to scroll on screen(from right-to-left), then off in a cyclic pattern. Once an item is scrolled off-screen, it's position is reset it's original position (slightly off-screen on the right side) effectively preparing them for more scrolling.
3 - The same MovieClip can't scroll in if it was the last one to be on-screen.
That's it really. When the clips are created, the dynamic text field for each is set to a counter value which basically gives each a number from 1 to 9, letting me differentiate each clip from the one other. As it is right now, it 'sort of' works which well, just doesn't cut it which is why I'm here. Content merrily scrolls maybe 3 or 4 times on average, then nothing happens. I'm sure my logic is wrong somehow (obviously) but I'm going cross-eyed trying to figure it out.

Oh, and I'm using the caurina Tweener package for the scrolling of MovieClips. use any tweening package, native or otherwise..
I have a main movieclip with a bunch of 'flies'-MCs flying around randomly in it. If the main mc is placed in main timeline, is there a way to retrieve the actually covered area of the main mc at a certain moment... imagine a snapshot bounding box of all flies at that specific moment.
View 9 RepliesI am attempting to dynamically display a series of questions with answers in my flash movie from an existing ASP page. Initially, the dynamic questions imported from an ASP page appear on the Flash page (question 1, 2, 3, etc.). When the user clicks on a question, the flash movie advances a frame and displays the answer. I can display the questions properly, but I am having a difficult time carrying over the question ID to the next frame so that the appropriate answer will display.
The current database fields look like this:

-AnswerID
-Answer
This is very simple to do in ASP or PHP but I am having a tough time trying to tie everything together in Flash. Should I create two separate ASP pages, one to query the questions and one to query the answers? How do I carry the QuestionID to the next frame in Flash?
I have an AS3 project where some content had to be scrolled in a browser to be seen.The problem is that when a button is clicked where the html scroller has been used the flash frame to which it goes is in the same position ie at the bottom of the frame. Is there a way to make sure that the new frame is at the top?I have tried using

View 6 RepliesRight now my stage dimensions are 980 X 800 px. I need to cut or "crop out" the bottom portion of the footer because its height is too long. So I changed the stage dimensions to 980 X 600 px (and changed the corresponding dimensions in the embed tag in the index.html file to match). Doing this seems to cut out the bottom but at the same time adds space to the top and seems to distort the overall spacing. Is there a simple way to crop out the bottom of the stage (just like cropping out a section of a photo)?

View 5 RepliesI have a site where all the pages have a common SWF embedded at the top (Nav and banner), but the rest of the page is HTML.Everything is working fine, but I'm finding the 'independence' between the HTML and Flash is making for some sloppy transitions from page to page.I was expecting the SWF to be delayed, at least for the first page visit(and I have a preload routine inside the swf to make it's delay and appearance a bit more visually pleasant), but was surprised to sometimes find the SWF appearing and playing while the HTML content was delayed (resulting in a SWF floating in black).What I'm wondering is if there's a way I can do some sort of preload on my index page.BUT, not the standard one that I'm sure everyone would suggest (like the javascript image 'preload', or the newer 'css visibility' preload trick). The problem with the standard one is that it doesn't check to see if everything is loaded.What I'm after is a routine on my index page that invisibly loads some of the elements from my inner pages (common swf, maybe some of the images) and WAITS until it's done before moving to the inner pages (displaying the company logo and/or a load status in the meantime).Many people would suggest a preloader inside the common SWF on my inner pages (which I have), but the problem with that on its own is that it doesn't stop the HTML from displaying.

I have a project for a site that sells fishing lures.I want to have an animated index page before moving on to the home page. My idea is to have a boat sitting on a pond fishing lines in the water, when a fish jumps out of the water, the water ripples, the next time you see the fish it's got a hook in it mouth and jumping out of the water.how do I go about it? How to I create the water rippling? I think with the fish I can do easily enough with it jumping on and off stage. Would I do the water with shape tweens?
