ActionScript 2.0 :: Extract Bounding Area Of MC With Random Content
Jul 1, 2008
I have a main movieclip with a bunch of 'flies'-MCs flying around randomly in it. If the main mc is placed in main timeline, is there a way to retrieve the actually covered area of the main mc at a certain moment... imagine a snapshot bounding box of all flies at that specific moment.
I followed the random motion tutorial here: [URL] Everything is working fine, but I want it to randomly move everywhere but not go past about an inch from the top. My document is 550w x 400h, and I made that change in the actionscript as it said in the tutorial. I also tried changing it from 550 x 400 to small numbers to maybe trick it into thinking the document is smaller but to no avail. I've been googling for the last couple of hours, but it always comes up with references to flash game coding tutorials, and I have 0 experience with actionscript 2.0 (i've been learning as I've been going, through google. I'm making an animated gift as a birthday present.)
I'm trying to build a "product spotlight" area on my site's homepage. There are a lot of products, so I want to display them randomly, and I want to specify an image, link and text in the XML file.
I've started by using the XML gallery on kirupa.com, but that didn't quite do what I wanted. I found a little workaround when I found a random XML image loader on another site, and used that.. all it would load was an image, so to make the product photos be links and have special text I made each photo a .swf instead of .jpg file and added a button link over the whole image. This way works, but we are adding more and more products and it's becoming cumbersome. There will be about 50 different products randomly changing.
It would be perfect if we could just set up the xml like
<list> <product> <image>whatever.com/product1.jpg</image> <url>whatever.com/product.2htm</url> <title>Buy this now for $3.50</title> </product> <product> <image>whatever.com/product2.jpg</image> <url>whatever.com/product2.htm</url> <title>Buy this now for $4.50</title> </product></list>
And then the flash file would have the link on the top layer and pull the url from the xml file, bottom layer would load in the image, and in the middle we'd have the title, maybe I'd have it slide in with a basic tween or something like that. And then, there could be like 50 different images listed in the xml, and it would display one randomly for like 10 seconds, then fade into a new one, and just keep swapping it out forever and ever. I really want to do it this way because I can update the text or images without having to build a new .swf file every time something changes.I know how to do some regular basic flash stuff, but I never got into the hardcore actionscripting, so I'm kinda stumped. Anyone know how I can pull something like this off or know of freeware example that I can use and build off of?

I am trying to create buttons on a 45 degree angle. They are simply text. I have tried drawing different hit areas for the button, but when I publish the swf the hit area for the button is always its bounding box (so there is a huge space in the upper left and lower right corner which activates the button).
In many cases the pieces have artifacts outside of their visible area. For example, a piece can have a picture of a dog's face, but one of the long ears is off to the side, outside the visible region of the piece. The path data is extremely detailed, so our designers didn't crop it off. They used a mask (at least I think it's a mask, I'm not a graphics guy and know little about that stuff) and this makes it invisible in Flash, when we turn them into movie clips. Also, in Flash when I look at the width and height of the piece, it does reflect only the visible area. However, in ActionScript when I try to get the width and height using, for example
Code:
pieceObject.width
I get the width of the piece including the part that is hidden, i.e. a larger width than the visible area.Is there a way in AS 3.0 to get the height / width of the bounding box of visible area only?
Is it possible to make a bounding circle instead of a bounding box?The objects should bounce INSIDE the circle.I have now a bounding box outside the circle, but the objects exceeds the circle at the corners.
I was thinking of making an array of Points on the edge of a circle and when the object is < or > then do something... but that would be a lots of if/else statements.
I am looking for an Java API to extract and control content from an flash (.swf) file. Are there any existing open source APIs which can help me do that?
I have an image file, in *.tif format, that looks like this: As you can see it contains an image along with a lot of text. Is there any way to read my .tif image and extract the text content into a String ?
I am trying to define the content area of a custom component that extends mx:VBox. The component has predefined headers and footers (visual children) and I want to set the area in the middle for adding children to the component. The component will be used like this:
I was wondering if there is a limit to how much Jaws (screen reader) can read in a text area in Flash. my text area contains about 15 lines, and always it stops reading at a certain point. In one test I was deleting one word, and then Jaws read one more for me(since I guess I deleted one). So it looks like there is a limit on how much it can read through AccessibiltyDescription property . How I can make the Jaws to read the whole content in the text area? I am working with flashbuilder and SDK 4.1.
How do I get the size of the content area of Container objects? One non generic solution is checking for styles I suppose but I am looking for some code that works generic for all standard flex Container objects. The controls are Flex 3
I'm working on a simple tutorial, and I'd like to randomly generate the positions of the red and green boxes in the accompanying images anywhere inside the dark gray area, but not in the white area. Are there any particularly elegant algorithms to do this? There are some hackish ideas I have that are really simple (continue to generate while the coordinates are not outside the inside rectangle, etc.)
I have a random motion script that I need to remove when the object in random motion hovers over a specific area in the background. I need the object to just keep moving in the direction it was going in and not randomly switch directions or bounce. This is my script for the random motion which is on the object:[code]
I have 12 empty Movie clips on stage. I want to get the content (jpg's or swf's) for these containers from an array. This is all fine, but I would like the contents to be loaded randomly into one of the 12 containers. The containers load the jpg's, which are preview thumbnails that need to link to the actual larger image plus some text. Loading eveything is OK, but I haven't figured out how to load the content into a random MC... I attached the fla and images.

I have a page with a "Tip of the day" section.I have at present about 30 different tips.I would like to set that section up so that every time the page loads a different tip appears, in random order.
I'm completely new to loading XML into Flash . I'm not very good with actionscript either, but I've managed to get pretty close to what I need to achieve via tutorials.[code]...
I'm working on a banner advertisement but I've hit a bit of a snag. First, here's what I'm trying to do.
1 - Eight MovieClips are added to the timeline. They are based on a MovieClip in the library which contains 1 dynamic text field.
2 - Content is to scroll on screen(from right-to-left), then off in a cyclic pattern. Once an item is scrolled off-screen, it's position is reset it's original position (slightly off-screen on the right side) effectively preparing them for more scrolling.
3 - The same MovieClip can't scroll in if it was the last one to be on-screen.
That's it really. When the clips are created, the dynamic text field for each is set to a counter value which basically gives each a number from 1 to 9, letting me differentiate each clip from the one other. As it is right now, it 'sort of' works which well, just doesn't cut it which is why I'm here. Content merrily scrolls maybe 3 or 4 times on average, then nothing happens. I'm sure my logic is wrong somehow (obviously) but I'm going cross-eyed trying to figure it out.
Here's a link to the source .FLA. I'm using CS4 but I saved it as CS3 to cater to the largest group possible.

Oh, and I'm using the caurina Tweener package for the scrolling of MovieClips. use any tweening package, native or otherwise..
i have a drop down menu am working on and each button tab (although they are not button instances !) when clicked opens up the "drop down" section which you can mouse over to choose another specific button etc - if you mouse out of that drop down area then it pulls back up to the original tab state .. what do i change to the code below to decrease the area that you mouse out of to make the drop down area pull back .....at the moment it at least two inches on the screen below and to the right of boundaries of the drop down box before it pulls up - i want to it pull up as the mouse leaves the boundary box .... hope this makes sense .... there is some part of the actionscipt below that controls this but can work out which bit and how to change it !!! (am guessing the x mouse and y mouse bits - but how to change it ???)
public static function cloneDpObj(target:DisplayObject):Bitmap { var duplicate:Bitmap;
[code]....
to clone target displayObject (MovieClip or Sprite) and return Bitmap Object.
It can get bitmap from the target object, but it seem don't get all the area of the image.
By give the width and height of target object, but the target object in design was applied by Glow Effect, so my question can we get the all view of bitmapdata from a displayobject?
I have a movie clip named circle_mc(see the image on the link below) and a mask object(movie clip) which determines visible area of the circle. User can change the portion which is visible (extend the red area and make it red+blue, gray area is invisible). I need to find proportion of visible area to invisible area (red+blue/gray) so that I can calculate angle.
I would like to first add the xml to my flash. Fine I can do this. But I have a number of buttons, where when I click say CW1, i get the information from the XML file with a node of CW1. I have all the xml set up fine.As I have about eight different postcode types.
ST, CW, CH, TF, WV, WS, DE, SK, SY, and each of these may have numbers that follow, i.e ST1, ST2, ST3 and so forth.
So I can only assume that the postal area could be the main nodes, and the numbers inside the child nodes, am I right thus far.o how can i load the area of the xml file into my text area on mouse click, pulling the information relating.
However I'd need to be able to draw *only* on the board area (a 450 x 350 pixels area) instead on the whole movie... how to "tweak it?" Here's the fla: [URL]
I'm programming a game for my Advanced Higher Computing class, and am doing a whack a mole style game. I am trying to program for the bit where when you click the moving movie clip, then the score is increased by 1.
I just want to do not allow editing at some area of text area in flex. How it can be done?let suppose text length in text area is 50 characters, i want to allow editing if cursor position is less than 15, and if cursor position in text area is greater than 15 it should not allow user to add more text in text area.If user press any key it should not add any character in text area.[code]
I have noticed when setting a bounding box on a drag object, if you go outside the bounds of the box you have set, the mouse won't let go of the object unless you go back inside the bounds and click on it again. Is there any way to force the stopDrag if you go outside the bounds while dragging? I have tried this bit of code:
