Professional :: Purpose Of Flash Catalyst, Professional And Builder?
Sep 20, 2010
I'm a bit confused with the purpose of these programs. For example if I want to create a game or utility app that runs on air. Can I design it in Flash Professional and later open in Builder for more heavy coding? Or is Catalyst supposed to be used as the design program?
I used to think that you design stuff in Flash Professional and then open the project up in Builder to do more deep coding.
I've made a video in Flash Pro, and I want to be able to play it in Flash Catalyst. I'm using 5.5 of both versions, btw. I export the Flash Pro video to a .mov file and then use Media Encoder to make that a .flv file. I bring that file into FC and publish to web. However, when I put those 'deploy to web' files on my website, the video doesn't play. Everything else works except for the video. So I put a generic, short .flv file that I downloaded from the internet into my FC file.
I published it to my website again, and everything worked fine. The video played. So obviously the problem with my video must be in the encoding process. I read one article online that said when I export a .mov file for FC, I should make sure that I don't have 'Fast - Compressed Header' selected in the Streaming options. Well, I checked and I don't. It's just under regular 'Fast'. I've even tried converting my .mov file to a f4v file, and that doesn't work.
Is there any way to "round trip" Android projects between Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder? I'm using the latest beta versions (Burrito and Panini). If not, will this be available with CS5.5 when it's released next month?
I'm building a networked client app with Flash Builder, and would like to be able to set environmental variables or #define's such as server's hostname and port. For debugging purposes I want to connect the client with different servers (and for other devs too). In C/C++ I'd define TEST_PORT=8888 or something in the IDE or build environment, that way I wouldn't need to commit a settings file along with the client. But not sure what's the standard for Flash Builder.
I've been going over several tutorials and whatnot and I'm confused on the point of movie clip symbols and motion tweens. To me using the other tweens and symbols are "easier". Can someone explain to me why they're so beneficial to have been added to CS4/CS5? Except I understand that movie clip symbols can be adjusted using the 3D tools but is that the only difference?
I recently purchased the CS5 Master Collection and am struggling to understand the uses for Flash Professional and Flash Builder 4. I was inspired by Jay Pavlina's Super Mario Crossover game and wish to make similar applications.
However, I am confused about whether I should be using Flash Professional or Flash Builder 4 or both? I purchased the two books that Jay Pavlina recommended "ActionScript 3.0 Animation Making Things Move!" and "Essential ActionScript 3.0". I've been trying to find resources that will help me understand exactly the purpose of each of these applications. It appears to me that ActionScript 3.0 is used in both? So which one should I be using? Or both? Or is one more design oriented and the other more development oriented? Can one make flash game like Jay's using just one or the other?
Is there a way to access the d:userLabel attribute in Flash Builder? I want to use a number of different files created from Illustrator -> Catalyst -> Flash Builder
Now the question: Can I access the "userLabel" with a scriptfunction? Something similar to getElementByID? I want to change for example the fillcolor of a rect or path with that function. Because I have no id here I can't do something like: R_1.fill = blue And I don't want to manually change the files from Illustrator.
Is there a way that I can load (or export) Flex/Flash builder project in Flash Professional CS5?As it turns out we got Flash Prof for our team, but it may look like we actually need Flash builder to build lots of UI related stuff..
I have standalone Flash Builder 4 which I downloaded as a trial and then later plugged in the license key. When I try to add Eclipse plugins by going to menu, Install New Software, the dialog for "Available Software" is broken. It looks very different from the same dialog in Eclipse, and it has no way to add update sites, etc.
Problem: I would like to enable code hinting and highlighting in either Flash Professional or Flash Builder when developing an Actionscript Communications File (.asc). Steps Taken: Searched Google with limited success, most signs all pointed to [URL] where one may obtain an Eclipse Plugin, but:It was created in 2007 (likely out dated)It has known bugs that haven't been addressedSearched this forum / adobe's web site to find a solution, to no avail.Posted this, now, in an attempt to put this to rest Request: how I can enable FP or FB to give code hints / syntax highlighting
What is the workflow for creating an AIR application in Flash Builder and how does it differ from Flash Professional? I am familiar with Flash Professional, but I'm trying top wrap my head around FB, but I'm coming from a stint in iOS development and Flash Pro is driving me crazy. (I have difficulty with classes mixed with the timeline, but I think that MXML might be a good substitute for the timeline.)(Bonus: What are some good online resources for learning MXML?)
I'm working on a Mac Pro with Mac Os 10.6.5 installed with the 64bits version. It was pretty good to see that Flash Builder can now work with Flash CS5. But if I don't work on Flash Builder or Flash CS5 for several minutes, Flash crashes everytime ! I have never worked once on the combo Flash CS5 / Flash builder 4 without having Flash crashing !It is very annoying, and a huge waste of time
I have a trial version of flash builder (eclipse plug-in) and registered flash cs5 proI'm trying to open a new AS3 class like in this tutorial: [URL]nd it doesn't work.at first it did asked if I want to edit the file in flash builder or not, and it didnt work.now it won't even ask.and also I cant open a flash proffessional project in flash builder, it says "This feature requires Adobe Flash CS5 or higher to be installed."but it is installed!
I'm an AS3 developer used to working with Flash Builder. I'm working with a designer who's using Flash Professional to design sprites and backgrounds for a game. I'm looking to create an integrated workflow for us, so they can layout levels in Flash Pro and I can add events in Flash Builder.
As well as triggering events when the player collides with items, triggering animations etc., I'm also looking to switch between scenes when the player changes level and the game changes state (start menu, in-play, game over etc.). To do this I'd like to load everything into Flash Builder and manipulate it programatically - showing and hiding scenes, scrolling, checking for collisions etc.
I've found guides to exporting a swc from Flash Pro and accessing the library in Flash Builder, but this only gives me the classes, not the positioned instances of objects. Is it possible to access everything on the stage as I'm looking to do?
This seems like an obvious workflow but I'm not finding it clear how it's done. Is my approach correct, or is there a better way to do this? Any advice on how to setup this workflow generally, what to do or avoid? More specifically, how can I access the entities on the stage and switch between scenes?
I am a designer working on a mobile project and I am experience in using Flash Professional and I am also beginning to get more comfortable with Flex. Is there a reason why I should use Flash Builder 4.5 instead of Flash Pro? Part of the mobile project will have some database calls (php+msql) and I also will be using geolocation with google maps. I think that all of these could be done in Flash Pro.I am tring to figure out a good workflow and I seem to be getting behind on my project because of these variables.
I have Flex Builder Professional Ver 3 (Built with Eclipse) version.
I need to build an application with charts. The problem is that there are no charting components to be seen. There is no datavisualization.swc file in the libs folder.
I'm working on an AIR project using Flash Builder. There's a couple of component that I could see would be easy to generate using Flash Catalyst.
I can't see any way to export a Flex component/library (SWC) of some UI elements from Flash Catalyst.
All I can see is that I can export an entire project from there and import it as a full project in flex but I can't see any way to export individual components..
I don't do flash myself: in this company, flash is generally used just for design elements, so the designers build the flash and my job is just getting it onto the site. All fine so far, but now one of the designers wants to move to using Flash Catalyst.
1. Flash Catalyst outputs one .swf file containing the application. 2. External files (images, videos, audio files) may be referenced, but by default are embedded into the .swf. 3. The flex framework is stored in .swz files. These files are signed by Adobe and therefore flash considers them safe to store in a "flash cache" separate from the browser cache. These framework files may be reused on any other site, and therefore reduce download times. 4. If you don't have the .swz files, and the person viewing your site doesn't already have them cached, they can be downloaded from the Adobe site.
Can I have the .swz files stored anywhere on my server, or do they need to be in the same folder as the .swf? I assume they can be anywhere, but I'd have to tell Flash Catalyst where to look for them.
I had created a simple slide show in Flash and published as a .swf file. The slide show contains few images and the animation takes about 45 seconds to run at 8 frames per second. When i imported it into Flash Catalyst, the animationa runs very fast, taking only about 15 seconds to get through the whole slide show. I re-adjusted the animation in Flash to make it run slower but when i imported the new version into flash catalyst, it runs at the same speed, --still very fast.Is there any way for me to control the speed of my animation and make it runs the same speed as I set up in Flash?
I have created a website inside of Flash Catalyst CS5 and it doesn't give me the option to make the entire site fit to browser window and resize with the window. I know this is something you can do in Flash so I tried to import the main.swf from Catalyst into Flash and added some as3 code to get it to run on the main stage. Everything worked fine, but when I tried to make the entire stage fit to window and resizable in the browser window by exporting with the 100% settings it just offset the main.swf to the left and didn't fit to the window at all.

From what I understand, Flash Catalyst is to be used with Flash Builder. Is it possible to create a button in Flash Catalyst that I can use in Flash Professional, the same way I would a regular button class, where I can change the label in Actionscript, or if I wanted to do that would I have to build each button separately, each one with a separate label?
I would like to know Adobe's Recommended system requirements for a PC running Flash Catalyst (not simply the minimum that are posted on this page: url...
I want to exported designed components from Flash Catalyst to IDEA.Because FXPL is a specific adobe format, i need it in a little bit more generic format like an swc.So how is the best way to get my component into an swc ? I found a lot of scripts / hacks to pack actionsscript / flex assets into an swc but i would like to have an "official" way.
If you want to use content on another server, that server needs to host a crossdomain.xml file allowing access. If this file isn't there, flash won't let you access it. Given that it's easy enough to just write a proxy (say a php script that curls the external URLs) what is the purpose of this restriction? It seems that the content is still 100% available to external people, but there is just one extra hoop to jump through.
I had purshased one licenses for each, flex builder 3 standard as well as flex builder professional. First, I installed flex builder 3 standard and entered the license key, it worked. As it was standard charting library has 'flex trial' water mark. Then I tried to uninstall flex builder 3 standard and install flex builder 3 professional again on 'same machine'. But here I faced the real problem, as soon as I run the exe, the license key automatically gets copied from windows registry file and it behaves as standard edition. Then I tried to use 'manage flex license' option and use 'upgrade to professional' option. Now as my key is for 'Flex 3 professional' and not 'upgrade to Flex 3 professional' it does not accept as valid key. I have few softwares which restrict me from reformatting my system
I'm wanting to create a moving object that will be exported into a tv commercial. Object has already been created in Adobe Illustrator, and now will be dropped into flash for adding movement. The destination commercial will be created in Sony Vegas, with the settings of (Australian) PAL television (25 fps, 576x720 pixels, lower field first). Thus keeping it simple, I want to set Adobe flash with the same output format, meaning that the canvas will have to be 576x720 pixels at 25 fps. So far this seems to have worked okay. Now I'm wanting to get rid of the canvas colour, just like I have here in this photoshop screen shot.
Judging by the colour palette in Flash Professional, it looks like it can't be done. I've checked "transparent palette" through yahoo and google, and had no results. The adobe documentation only details how to remove a background in Photoshop.
