View 1 RepliesThis information must be on the Adobe site, but I've not had any luck tracking down the information... When creating a Mac and Windows projector in CS4, what are the minimum system requirements to open the created files on a Mac or in Windows?
View 5 RepliesI am noticing a weird behavioral on some pages with flash file that loads XML in IE7 or IE8. If the browser is visible, the XML loads right after the flash. If the browser is minimized, while the load xml happens, it takes like 500 - 900 ms to load the XML. The same issue if its loading an image, say JPG.
View 2 RepliesI'm working on an AIR project using Flash Builder. There's a couple of component that I could see would be easy to generate using Flash Catalyst.
I can't see any way to export a Flex component/library (SWC) of some UI elements from Flash Catalyst.
All I can see is that I can export an entire project from there and import it as a full project in flex but I can't see any way to export individual components..
I had a project requirement which was to stream video to people across the globe (max 100 simultaneous connections) and i was under the impression that a single HTTP server is sufficient. However, a friend of mine said i will have to use an FMS server. How does this basically work ?
If i record video from my webcam and store it for future consumption, where will it be stored ? On my site server ? or on the FMS server What is so special about an FMS server ? Can i turn any server into an FMS server I read somewhere that streaming video via my own server does not allow the user to jump to a particular part in a video. Is this true If the requirement is to stream live video to people, how does this work ? Does the video from the source (webcam) get transferred to my server and then to the FMS server or directly to the FMS server I'm pretty confused about the FMS server concept and some articles or links would really help too, however your expert answers will be invaluable
I don't do flash myself: in this company, flash is generally used just for design elements, so the designers build the flash and my job is just getting it onto the site. All fine so far, but now one of the designers wants to move to using Flash Catalyst.
1. Flash Catalyst outputs one .swf file containing the application.
2. External files (images, videos, audio files) may be referenced, but by default are embedded into the .swf.
3. The flex framework is stored in .swz files. These files are signed by Adobe and therefore flash considers them safe to store in a "flash cache" separate from the browser cache. These framework files may be reused on any other site, and therefore reduce download times.
4. If you don't have the .swz files, and the person viewing your site doesn't already have them cached, they can be downloaded from the Adobe site.
Can I have the .swz files stored anywhere on my server, or do they need to be in the same folder as the .swf? I assume they can be anywhere, but I'd have to tell Flash Catalyst where to look for them.
I had created a simple slide show in Flash and published as a .swf file. The slide show contains few images and the animation takes about 45 seconds to run at 8 frames per second. When i imported it into Flash Catalyst, the animationa runs very fast, taking only about 15 seconds to get through the whole slide show. I re-adjusted the animation in Flash to make it run slower but when i imported the new version into flash catalyst, it runs at the same speed, --still very fast.Is there any way for me to control the speed of my animation and make it runs the same speed as I set up in Flash?
View 1 RepliesI have exported a flash file as exe which works fine on my machine but when it is delivered to the client it does not work. Does a exe file require that the machine have a browser flash environment. I that everthing was packages in the exe.
View 2 RepliesI've made a video in Flash Pro, and I want to be able to play it in Flash Catalyst. I'm using 5.5 of both versions, btw. I export the Flash Pro video to a .mov file and then use Media Encoder to make that a .flv file. I bring that file into FC and publish to web. However, when I put those 'deploy to web' files on my website, the video doesn't play. Everything else works except for the video. So I put a generic, short .flv file that I downloaded from the internet into my FC file.
I published it to my website again, and everything worked fine. The video played. So obviously the problem with my video must be in the encoding process. I read one article online that said when I export a .mov file for FC, I should make sure that I don't have 'Fast - Compressed Header' selected in the Streaming options. Well, I checked and I don't. It's just under regular 'Fast'. I've even tried converting my .mov file to a f4v file, and that doesn't work.
I have created a website inside of Flash Catalyst CS5 and it doesn't give me the option to make the entire site fit to browser window and resize with the window. I know this is something you can do in Flash so I tried to import the main.swf from Catalyst into Flash and added some as3 code to get it to run on the main stage. Everything worked fine, but when I tried to make the entire stage fit to window and resizable in the browser window by exporting with the 100% settings it just offset the main.swf to the left and didn't fit to the window at all.

From what I understand, Flash Catalyst is to be used with Flash Builder. Is it possible to create a button in Flash Catalyst that I can use in Flash Professional, the same way I would a regular button class, where I can change the label in Actionscript, or if I wanted to do that would I have to build each button separately, each one with a separate label?
View 1 RepliesSo, after just being dumped on from a great height by our development company I need to create an entire site in flash with login and dynamic addition of content etc etc.. What would be the recommended maximum size (pixel wise) for a flash site... what I have here is 1600px sq? It's mostly database driven so shouldn't lag too much from a point of view of file size, I'm just concerned because of the short deadline and I find this kind of large size wise to do 100% in flash..
View 10 RepliesCurrently I have a flash based application (game) which I need to put on facebook, the users could save their scores and resume their game. For the task I was wondering which scripting language would be appropriate. And are there any API's available which could in the process. Or does one has to make all of it from scratch.
View 1 RepliesA client needs a standard consumer color printer for printing name badges from my flash app. Last time we used the app, I couldn't do any pre-testing of their computer and printer beforehand. So, of course, the margins were completely wrong when the time came to print. Ideally, I'll have the flash app's bugs worked out for the next run, but for safety's sake does anyone know of a printer that has good controls for custom margins and offsets, in case some minor adjustments are needed?
View 1 RepliesI looked at this demo: [URL] Flex seems very slow compared to silverlight 3. Unfortunately can't see pure flash but should flex be forbidden if performance is top requirements compared to Flash ?
View 3 RepliesI want to exported designed components from Flash Catalyst to IDEA.Because FXPL is a specific adobe format, i need it in a little bit more generic format like an swc.So how is the best way to get my component into an swc ? I found a lot of scripts / hacks to pack actionsscript / flex assets into an swc but i would like to have an "official" way.
View 2 RepliesIs there any way to "round trip" Android projects between Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder? I'm using the latest beta versions (Burrito and Panini). If not, will this be available with CS5.5 when it's released next month?
View 1 RepliesI have one that's almost done and the stage size is 700x800 px. But I'm starting to worry if that's going to look too small? To change it, will be a lot of work - there's animation, imported Jpegs etc. As far as I can tell, in order for it to look correct in larger dimensions I will need to basically create it again from the ground up. So, I'd really like to get an idea of what the optimal pixel dimensions would be for ecards to run on multiple platforms.
I really want to do this and I don't feel like I can move ahead until I get the viewing size correct. I don't even mind redoing the card. I just want my future cards to be the correct size. I don't want to have to come back and redo them all. By the way, the cards are being made in Flash. The site itself will be created in DreamWeaver.
I am trying to find Adobes detailed hardware requirements for Flash Media Server 3.5 - The base one on site is too vague i.e. what is the storage requirements i.e. Raided harddrives - how many? Do we need something more robust i.e.SAN Want to support 500 concurrent streams @ 700kb.
View 3 RepliesHowever, when I preview the flash catalyst swf file, the flash swf thats inside, plays just fine.
View 2 RepliesThere is a number of Flash and AJAX based uploaders around. I need a file upload component for an existing form in an existinc application, so I have very specific requirements for it. Maybe somebody knows one off the top of their head and saves me a lot of research.
I need a file upload component that has a progress bar and "upload" button next to it (= standalone functionality, no connection to the submit event of a surrounding form).
It should be either Flash or Prototype based. No JQuery or Moo, as the app runs with prototype.
If server-side scripting is needed, it must be PHP. No Perl, no ASP.
On successful upload, I need a custom Javascript function triggered. (I need to update a file list that is displayed on the same page.)
The possibility of filtering file names before upload (no Umlauts, spaces..) would be a plus.
I will try to give this question a bounty in a minute if I'm allowed to.
Edit: I can't seem to open a bounty. Do I have to wait first?
benefit a Flash/Action Script beginner?
View 2 RepliesI'm producing an interactive video piece for my New Media masters project. I've put it up on my website, and was wondering out of curiousity, whats the recommended upper limit for the size of a .SWF file on the internet to run smoothly? I realise CPU and internet speeds vary greatly from machine to machine along with RAM, but is there a general upper limit which shouldn't be exceeded for .SWFs?
My project's .SWF is currently at 260kb. It also pulls in .FLVs that are between 800kb - 1.5mb and .mp3s between 1.5mb - 2mb via XML.
I'm a bit confused with the purpose of these programs. For example if I want to create a game or utility app that runs on air. Can I design it in Flash Professional and later open in Builder for more heavy coding? Or is Catalyst supposed to be used as the design program?
I used to think that you design stuff in Flash Professional and then open the project up in Builder to do more deep coding.
I work on a project where FMS will be used as the main streaming server. We are going to use p2p/multicast technology which is available in FMS. My first question is : What are the approximate hardware requirements for such a server ? REMARK : this server will be connected to a switch with 1G/bits ports. If we use p2p/multicast technology the maximal number of users which the system can handle is (theoretically)unlimited, is this right ?
View 1 RepliesI want to build a silverlight web application that could installed on a user's computer. So any hosting requirements would be subject to whatever configuration the user has. What are there requirements to host a silverlight application? I need the same question answered for Flash and WPF.
Is it required that the .Net framework (or whatever Flash uses in that case) be installed on the machine? Obviously some webserver must be installed, what are the restrictions on the webserver for these three technologies?
Assume you have a variety of number or int based variables that you want to be initialized to some default value. But using 0 could be problematic because 0 is meaningful and could have side affects. I have been working in Actionscript lately and have a variety of value objects with optional parameters so for most variables I set null but for numbers or ints I can't use null. An example:
package com.website.app.model.vo {
public class MyValueObject {
public function MyValueObject (
_id:String=null,
_amount:Number=0,
[Code] .....
The difficulty is that using 0 in the above code might be problematic if the value is not ever changed from its initial value. It is easy to detect if a variable has a null value. But detecting 0 may not be so easy because 0 might be a legitimate value. I want to set a default value to make the parameter optional but I also want to later detect in my code if the value was changed from its default without hard to debug side affects. I suppose I could use something like -1 for a value. I suppose it depends on the nature of the variable and the data.
i am working with Flex for quite sometime. but i hadn't get any chance to even look at Adobe AIR platform. I am planning to do some personal softwares using AIR.
Provided the background that am an absolute zero in AIR, what all should I have in my system apart from Flex builder? And how fast i can learn AIR if I am pretty comfortable in Flex?
I've created a rectangle in catalyst and under the "properties" panel, all I can see is Corners 10 for the rectangle. Is there a way to individually define each corner similar to CSS. I can't see any source code view in catalyst to enable me to fine tune it for each of the 4 corners. How do I specify the roundedness of each corner separately?
