Professional :: Maintain Layered Image Quality When Imported Into Flash?
Mar 17, 2010
I'm having a problem with importing a layered PSD file into Flash, an issue which i've read about in a number of forums but haven't yet been able to fix.
The content of the PSD file in question is numerous layers of line drawing which I am importing to the Stage and converting to keyframes in Flash. The layers have no white background and are clear but for the lines of drawing.
The problem I'm having is that the first layer of the PSD file imports perfectly, with its quality intact, but all those which follow it are distorted and jagged, and look pretty awful for some reason.
I have experimented with both lossy (set at 100) and lossless compressions to try and improve the layer quality, lossless is marginally better but not the best.

I am creating simple drawings in Power Point and them saving them as png or jpg files. I then bring the drawing into Flash using import to stage. The imported drawings lose some quality (e.g. straight lines appear jagged). Any way to maintain image quality when importing images into Flash.

The images in this banner gallery just don't look as good as they do on my computer.

has the whole "roundtrip" feature been left out of Flash Professional CS5.5 when it comes to imported, layered PSD files? Is the only answered to crop down and save a single .png layer out of the orginial PSD file?

My picture size is about 1000px by 1000px. It's pretty big, but simple. It has large circles, & when I place it in Flash, the circle's edges become pixelated and choppy, and not at all as smooth as it was in Photoshop. How can I maintain the quality? I tried putting a JPG in and a PSD, both of them looked really bad.

I'm having a hard time figuring out the best way to import graphics from Photoshop. I tried importing a psd for an arrow shape into Flash CS5. The imported image looks good. But when I right click on the imported image and choose 'Edit with Photoshop', it's just a flattened version. Is there another way of importing that keeps the editability of the original psd?

I notice when I run animations in the flash player, the image quality because very pixelated and blocky when I enlarge the animation.
I need my website to scale to different screen resolutions, so this can be a problem. Is there any way to make images smoother when the flash file is enlarged beyond it's native resolution? I really need to know since my website has to scale to a LOT of resolutions.

The site is build up entirely in flash. I let flash publish with the option scale: default (show all).
Can that be the reason why the pictures on the site look so bad? The picture looks so unsmooth, you see so many pixels in the borders. How come?

I'm trying to create a countdown timer for my website. I have written a code in ActionScript 2.0 that is working but I have a background that I created in Illustrator onto which I want to embed the timer. So, I have the image and on top of that image is where I would like the numbers to countdown, if that makes any sense?
I've posted the image I am talking about. The bottom half (the box at the bottom) is where I want to put the numbers counting down using Flash.
Is there a specific format that I need to have the imported image in since I have tried jpg, gif, bitmap and none of these allow me to put an action onto it?

I set my images at 60% quality JPG files out of photoshop which seems to give a very nice representation. I set up a site to take a full screen, so I expect it to be larger on a bigger screen then what I see on mine. I figured to keep every image actual size at about 25% bigger when the finlal needed size in the layout, so if the site is ever on the bigger screen then images have some stored resolution to be enlarged and accomodate an increase in size. So all of mine images are scaled at about 75%.
Is it a good practise or things don't work this way in Flash? Perhaps it is better to keep the images to 100% (rather than importing intentially enlarges images) but make the maximum quality? Or both ways kind of work out?

I have a .png image of all 44 US presidents, I'm trying to figure out how I could break it apart so that each president can be clicked on. I'm a fairly experienced actionscript programmer, have done some game development work in the developer role but never in the design/UI role, thus I'm not great (or even good!) at some of the beginner stuff regarding UI. I was thinking I could use the lasso tool to select an area, then somehow make that selection into a grapic or movie clip symbol, but I can't seem to get that to work and I'm wasting a lot of time experimenting!

I need to first express that I'm a fully self-taught Flash designer. No one has ever sat down and tried to explain to me the DOs and DONTs about Flash. I have followed tutorials, books, and anything else I can get my hands on, but never a person. People of Flash seem to be very hard to find, in my personal experience.I am the most comfortable with Photoshop, knowing very little about Illustrator or Fireworks. That said, I have been asked to create a 45KB (yikes!) max file, rotating 3 .jpg images I created from other .jpgs given to me. The images are usually large, so I am given room to compress them for a 300px x 250 px stage.
However, these images are always my biggest culprit for my huge file size. I'll import them in, making them into Graphic Symbols, but nothing seems to prevent the enourmous file size. When given the raw images, I would throw them into Photoshop, make the files the correct 300x250 size. Then I have tried: saving the image at the best resolution in .jpg and .png form, and then I tried saving the images as low-as-I-could-stomach quality. I hardly see a difference with file size when they are imported into Flash and used.I was told to use Fireworks's Optimize function, which I did, but it made my .swf even biggerWhen I have my Flash piece all set up/animted as I want, but I need to replace the bitmap(.jpg/.png) photos, I will:right click on the bitmap to get properties, "upload" the new image to be used, adjust the Quality, having "Allow smoothing" unclicked.
I understand I should make as much of the graphics in Flash as I can, instead of Import, but I am primarily given photographs to use.Seeing what my previous peers have done is mind-puzzling, but they are not around, so I cannot ask them for their advice. Their files are under 45KB and look sharp and amazing:[URL]

I'm trying to make a Image Gallery for my website by myself. However, although I can read ActionScript rather well, when it comes to writing it myself I tend to hit massive walls. Anyway I've looked at many tutorials and guides and all kinds of stuff but I still can't figure out how to get the coding to do what I want it to do. It isn't a bug because I can't get the foundations of the code down.
What I am envisioning is a initial main menu with several different selections (I.E. 3D models, 2D drawings, doodles, ect. ect. ect.) and when you click one it changes to that specific gallery. The way I thought to do it was using OOP to make a base GalleryEngine class and then implement it for the Main Menu and Image Galleries. I realize that I could do all this in flash but I think if I can get the framework of the code down that it will be easier to modify and switch out images and whatnot.

I just realized I was working on 4:3 when I need to make a 16:9 movie. So I resized the stage, but now everything is on the left side.
I tried turning on "edit multiple frames" and marked the entire stage, layers and frames and moved everything to the centre. Almost everything moved, excepted for material that is on motion tween key frames.

am using Flash CS5 and Photoshop CS3. The issue I am facing is while exporting from photoshop (optimized for web and devices) as png-24 , most of the images lose their quality inside flash. I have tried to make the publish settings for image quality 100. On lossless compression of the images, the image gets blurry. The total quality of display is highly degraded in flash in comparison to that of photoshop

I'm trying to get a transparent image to fly in from the side. So, I *thought* I was doing the correct thing by moving the "symbol" off of the visible portion of the stage, and creating a motion tween to move it onto the stage. The motion works, but the quality of the image in general (and the text in specific) looks pixelated. Thus, I did a little bit of snooping, and everyone said that you should start with a bitmap. So I saved the image from Photoshop into .bmp format, and was able to set the properties to "allow smoothing" and with lossless compression. So far, so good. Now, as I expected, the transparency is no longer there...
So here's the question: how can I make this image retain its quality, still have transparency, and a motion tween? It seems like this is some set of characteristics that don't play well together, even though I see this type of thing online ALL the time.I tried "Trace Bitmap" to convert to a raster image, and tried to follow some suggestions online, but when I do "Trace Bitmap", it ends up looking like it has a bunch of grayish dots on the image... definitely NOT what I was expecting.

I have a logo which I have created in photoshop, it is made up of 4 layers, some of which I want to animate. I create my movie, I do so by opening my PSD file and then animating the layers. However I have a problem in that when I view my movie the image quality is poor, and there is what I would describe as noise around some of the image.

This is very strange.i would like to show in my swf movie all the icons (jpg/png) I've imported as they are. I've set the JPG quality 100%, I've tried the PNG settings without quality lost, I've unchecked the "Allow smooth" setting.
But as soon as the movie have quality=high all the icons are smoothed/breaked and do not looks like the original ones [URL]..Instead, setting quality=low let show the icons as they are![URL]..Of course, I need the movie to be quality=high, since there will be some other stuff on it!

I've had this annoying problem since CS1 and persists through CS3. If i import an image (either to stage or to library then placed on stage) the pixel size reported in the properties box is smaller by a very small amount. For example, I just dropped a 1005x650 PNG on the stage. The properties box shows this as w[1004.8] h[649.9]. The file is 72ppi in photoshop. Zooming in confirms that the image is shrunk slightly. In this case, the image was same size as the stage and I could see the white background showing through on the right edge of the graphic. It means that everytime i put a bitmap graphic on the stage, I have to correct the w and h in the properties box.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution? Does it occur in CS4?

So I have recently aquired Flash CS4 and the Quicktime Export is completely different from any version before.I create a lot of 3-4 minute shorts in Flash and have always enjoyed the ease of QT export, but when I export with CS4 I get all kinds of ghosting, even on 5-10 second clips so breaking up the fla file's scenes is no help. After doing a lot of online research I see a few people have similar problems, but no concrete explanations or solutions.Has Flash-to-Quicktime compatability been disabled?I see that the "Quicktime Movie" export options is not available, only the "Quicktime" export, which yields inferior results. Since I export to the web and for dvd I don't want to have to export PNG sequences and rebuild the soundtrack, but is there simply no longer quality compatability between the two programs?Do I need to ditch Flash for Toon Boom?

After I imported a .mp3 or .wav in Flash, and I check the sound in the library, the quality of the sound has decreased. Why does an import effect a sound, and how do I solve this? (PS: I do not mean that the sound-quality decreases after publishing, I know I can change the settings)
