This is a simplified version of the original code. The above function generates an error because j is undefined in the function. I am wanting to get the variable j when the button is pressed.
How do I pass the variable j to the Button_Click function?
I am running a loop to pull thumbs into a containing movieclip from an xml list. What I want to do is have the thumb's parent movieclip fade in after they are done loading, but I can't figure out how to reference the parent once it's loaded.My code(which currently doesn't work the way I want it):

I have a movieClip named MC, and it's enabled with action script, with the class name MC_Rectangle and a Stage.I override the MC_Rectangle class file in a mc_rectangle.as external file.here is the code:
1. how can i access the variable "sequence" in "mc_rect"
2. how can i pass parametre from main stage to mc_rect via function setSequence(data:int)?
3. how can i call the function in addSequence() in mc_rect.
in asp.net, i usually use mc_rect.sequenct,mc_rect.setSequence(data), mc_rect.addSequence() to achieve my goals......btw, can function in mc_rect return out result to main stage?
Forgive me for this stupid noob question but I want to call a function (loadList) that originally gets triggered after a mouseevent from another function (addToXML) that does not have an event.
The loadList function takes info from a XML var, sticks it into an array which then gets loaded into a tile list and that is working fine.
The addToXML function when called adds elements to the XML var after which I want to call the first function with the event parameter so it refreshes the items in the tile list.
I know it can do this by creating a new array and loading that into the tile list in the addToXML function, but it be much simpler to just recall the function.
but all the event constants I have tried give me error messges like "1061: Call to a possibly undefined method addEventListener through a reference with static type Function."
Suppose I want to create a bunch of buttons using a loop. But I want each button to do something different. Suppose the buttons are numbered and I simply want each button to print out its unique number when clicked. Heres what I have so far:

Ive tried many different things to get this to work, but none of them worked so I wont bother posting them all. At best, I got it so every single button traced "button 100 was clicked". I sort of understand why that happened, but I dont know how to make it work properly. I have already created a custom mouse event which seems to work fine. It is simply a mouse event which passes an additional sound object. The problem is I am passing this event to another class which checks for collision of a movie clip with another and if true it adds the sound to an array. What I think is happening is a type conversion problem between my customEvent and the MouseEvent. [code]...

I have 2 functions. Each one is being called by a different event listener. Both event listeners work because I am able to trace strings in both of them.. my problem is that i am trying to create a variable that is local to both functions. The first function "working" adds a number to the variable and when the second event listener triggers function "notworking" which retrieves this same variable called "counting" both functions are called automatically by event listeners.. how do I do this? i am stomped!

I headed some problem which can't solve. It's simple. I'm making slideshow, and wanna pictures to be dynamically loaded. List of images is stored in list.xml - a valid xml file. Now, here is piece of the code:

So, the triggered function processXML cannot change value of any variable which stands out of her. Is there a way to export (in this case) information about amount of images listed in list.xml to some of the variables that I can use later (for example imgno).
