Actionscript 3 :: Flash Builder 4.5 - Can't Import External Classes?
Aug 31, 2011
I just installed the trial version of 4.5 of flash builder, migrating from 4.0 and I am encountering quite a frustrating problem. For some reason in which I can not peg, FB refuses to compile anything with an import from an external class, like greensock, bulk loader etc. I keep getting a 1172: Definition could not be found for any import from my external class AS3 folder on my harddrive.
Now I did edit my build path in the project and include the AS3 folder there as I usually do in past FB projects. Even code hinting works when typing in the import lines and even making new objects from those imports. But every time I save or try to compile, such errors appear on each one consistently. This is coming from a fresh install of 4.5 btw on any Flash Professional project and I would like to use it but I can't seem to get around such a fundamental problem.

When I point my code to import an external classes such as:
import flash.display.*;
my understanding is that its referencing something within the flash directory to load up the display classes.
In other instances I create a "com.whatever" directory to store other classes that my code can point to.
Well I was running through the Kirupa tutorial (displaying google maps in flash) and I noticed in the code it says "import [url]..." the swf works just fine but where is it grabbing the google classes from if I didnt create the directory?

Is there any way to auto-import as3 classes (internal/intrinsic Flash Player classes at least) using Emacs ?
Looked for as3-mode and actionscript-mode but nothing working was found. as3-mode can import class if it is opened in buffer (but not *.mxml files)

I just upgraded from Flash Builder 4 to 4.5 and have imported one of my FB 4 projects.I am now seeing an orange question mark in the gutter next to all of my import statements that are importing local classes (as well as everywhere the said class methods are used) and an orange underline appears under the import statement.When I hover over the underline it says that the import could not be found.
The project compiles and runs without a problem (I use ANT to build this project).If I open one of the class files in question then change something (i.e press space bar) and hit save (EDIT: actually found I don't have to even save, just opening causes FB to find it) then go back to the file importing it the orange question mark is gone for that import, I get the code assist and CTL+Click links me to the class file. However, if I close that file and reopen it again cannot find the class file.The classes in question are stored under my project's src dir as:
- src
+---com
+---myappname[code]........
Is this a FB 4.5 "enhancement"? I've tried deleting and re-importing the project, refreshing the project and am now kind of at a loss of what to do. It's annoying enough that I may need to downgrade to 4.

I'm running Flash Builder 4 that came with my Adobe Master Suite CS5 group of software. I'm trying to implement a flip animation that uses the following packages:
fl.transitions.Tween
fl.transitions.TweenEvent
fl.transitions.easing.Strong
but I'm getting compiler errors for each of those lines:
1172: Definition fl.transitions:Tween could not be found.
1172: Definition fl.transitions:TweenEvent could not be found.
1172: Definition fl.transitions.eashing:Strong could not be found.
I found some references other people discussed regarding CS3, but I'm on cs5 (and this machine never had cs3 installed, I started with cs4 and upgraded to cs5).
Do I need to explicitely tell Flash Builder where to find these packages? Are they not standard to the Flash Builder 4.0 Standard build?

I have the source folder from a friend's Android app and I am going to do all of the design for the app. If I could import the folder that he gave me from Eclipse, it would be easier to create a nice UI for the app.
Is this possible? If not, can I load the XML files into Flash Builder to make the UI? EDIT: To clarify, I have a project file that I can open in Eclipse. I want to edit the appearance of the project using Flash Builder without interfering with the application's functionality.

I've been having this really annoying thing happen the past few days, that has happened before but not as frequently. I create a project in Flash Builder, import some classes, and then on occasion it keeps erasing those classes. So then I get errors in a lot of my datatypes, have to go back through my document and retype the datatype so that it reimports the class.
I know flash builder can be a bit buggy at times

How can I set up a project in Flash Builder for creating a collection of classes that is not an application by itself? When creating an Actionscript project it forces having a main application file, as well as sets up the whole bin-debug folder and such.
For instance, if you wanted to start coding something like Tweener, Papervision, or some other set of classes that doesn't publish to an application, how would you set up the project in Flash Builder?

When building a Flex library project in Flash Builder 4, setting the Include all Classes flag in the library properties tells the compiler to include all compiled classes into the resulting SWC file. Sometimes this flag gets reset or ignored. The .flexLibProperties file looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<flexLibProperties includeAllClasses="true" version="1">
<includeClasses/>

For some reason Flash Builder 4 doesn't autocomplete any more for new projects I create (either pure Actionscript or Flash Pro projects). But for previous projects it still works fine.For instance when I go to create a new actionscript class, when I click browse next to Superclass there are only TWO classes that come up. EventDispatcher & Sprite. Where have the rest of the classes gone?
When I try to type inside the class.. ie var mc:MovieClip... as I'm typing MovieClip nothing comes up any more.. pushing ctrl+space doesn't bring up a list of classes either. Importing classes, no code hinting comes up at all.I haven't changed anything in Flash Builder between now and when my previous projects were created.

I started to use Flash Builder with Adobe Flash CS5. Everything seems to ork great, but auto code completion if FB works only for FlexSDK classes. For example, if I'll write "import fl." list with "events;ik;lang; ..." appears, but when I write "import flash." i have ".text" suggestion only. I would be very glad if someone could tell me how to fix this. I couldn't find anything in google (code completion in Flash Pro works great, only in Flash Builder not).

why the getDefinitionByName function works with "com.foo.Bar" and gives error with "com.foo.Rab"?My only clue is that the class com.foo.Bar was created before importing the project to Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP (4.5.1 namely).
My question is very specific, in fact you could try for yourself if you had FB4.5.1, a prior version of the same program, and a lot of time. Obviously I'm hoping to find someone who have experienced this particular issue or any related issue with similar functions.

I'm building a video player using Flash CS4 (hereby referred to as "Flash") to create the graphic symbols and compiling and debugging with Flash Builder 4 ("FB4"). Here are the steps I take in my current workflow: --Create the graphic symbols in Flash. I've created a few different symbols for the player, but I'll focus on just the play/pause button ("ppbutton") here. --In the Library panel, I go to the ppbutton symbol's Linkage properties and link to a class named assets.PlayPauseButtonAsset that extends MovieClip. I do not actually have an assets package nor do I have a class file for PlayPauseButtonAsset as Flash will create them for me when I publish.
--In Flash's Publish settings, I set the project to export a SWC that will be used in FB4, called VideoPlayerAssets.swc. --After the SWC is created, I create my FB4 project called "VideoPlayer" and add the SWC to my path. FB4 creates the class VideoPlayer in the default package automatically. --In VideoPlayer.as, I import assets.*, which imports all of the symbol classes I created in Flash and are available via VideoPlayerAssets.swc. I can now instantiate the ppbutton and add to the stage, like this:

I tried to import a class in a .as file and I had strange behaviors that I cannot explain. First of, I tried to get work a senocular class by importing it locally his script in the same directory of my main .as class.
package{
import flash.display.*;
import flash.net.*;
import flash.events.*;
import duplicateDisplayObject;
There was no error returned from the compiler saying not found but there was one telling my class is still undefined as when I try to make the class work. (possibly undefined method). So I did it with the old fashion I found in some demos, placing the .as file in a com/senocular/display/ folder:
package {
import flash.display.*;
import flash.net.*;
import flash.events.*;
import com.senocular.display.duplicateDisplayObject;
And then no errors. The compiler recognize the class and execute it.

I'm starting to experiment with writing / importing my own classes to better modularize the code.
After trial and error it seems to me that I always have to define classes in a self-defined package as static, otherwise they cannot be accessed.

I'm trying to import a web service with the Flex builder feature (Data > Import Web Service). The process proceeds as expected and the classes are generated based on the web service description. The code is generated with compile errors in it though.There are 20 errors of 2 varieties. I've included a sample of the errors below.It looks like an error in the auto gen. The auto gen code is trying to dispatch an object of ArrayCollection type. As far I know that isn't possible. rror examples:
1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type net.responsys:ListTablesForCampaignResultEvent to an unrelated type flash.events:Event. Responsys/src/net/responsysResponsysWS57.as
1119: Access of possibly undefined property headers through a reference with static type
