Actionscript 3 :: Flex SDK 3.5 Builds Bigger Swfs?
Mar 5, 2010
I have an application which is almost entirely in actionscript. When I build it using Flex SDK 3.5 its size is roughly 378 KB, While Flex SDK 3.0 outputs a swf with roughly 355 KB. What could the reason be?

We're currently developing a flex web app and our build situation is far from ideal. At present we're (as in individual developers) just building using FlashBuilder and deploying manually. The programmers are currently screaming bloody murder for two reasons, though:The lack of CI is like going back to the stone ageWe don't much care for FlashBuilder(Note: We're only using FlashBuilder because it was the easiest way to set up a flex project in conjunction with Away3d and get it building / rendering correctly -- it's a stopgap solution).As a predominately .NET development shop, we're used to doing continuous integration as well as continuous deployment. Ideally, we'd like to get something comparable to this for our flash projects without tying ourselves to a particular IDE.
Requirements:
The build process must be:
.. runnable via the commandline
.. runnable on both developer and CI build machines (and certainly not requiring an IDE!)
.. preferably as IDE-independent as possible (pragmatism will kick in though; if this causes a lot of friction we'll just pick one).
.. able to run on Windows (we develop using Windows)
We don't mind a touch of duplication or a few manual steps (e.g. tarting up the build scripts if we add a new project via an IDE, or generating one configuration from another if tools exist), but the less duplication / maintenance required the better.

Does anyone else experience publishing ad hoc builds for the iPhone (from flash cs5) taking a long time (10 minutes +) ? Whereas it would only take a couple for a (non ad hoc) test build. I suspect it might be stuck in a loop somewhere.Or is it simply a matter of waiting patiently whilst the provision is being approved (or whever it's waiting on)

I'm using AsUnit for unit-testing my current AS3 project. My Main() is basically:
if ( UnitTest )
runUnitTests();
else
runMainProgram();
where I change UnitTest before building depending on whether I want to run the program or run the unit tests. Is there a way that makes it easier to switch between the two modes?
Optimally, I'd use F5 for building with UnitTest=false and another hotkey for building with UnitTest=false. What is the closest I can get with FlashDevelop?

When I GZIP an swf file, the size goes from 1,21 mb to 1,86 mb...I guess, as a colleague of mine said, that the swf is already binary and can't be compressed anymore.Conclusions is also that zipping swf files shouldn't be done.

I have a main fla file which loads an external swf into an empty movieclip on the main timeline which works fine but I want a button in the external swf to load another external swf into another empty movie clip on the main timeline.eg. start.swf loads UKEIAMap.swf into (empty movie clip within start.swf) MapLoader_mc then a button havant_b within UKEIAMap.swf needs to load HavantProjectSheet.swf into (empty movie clip within start.swf) ProjectSheetLoader_mc without unloading UKEIAMap.swf

I am loading eight external swfs by way of eight buttons with actionscript to remove the swfs and sound after a new button is clicked. This works fine except that as soon as you get to the frame where the actionscript is all the swfs load at one time on top of each other. I don't want any to load until the button is clicked for the right one. MouseEvent listener works but only after all the swfs have loaded. How do I get the swfs to load only when the buttons are clicked. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

Lets say I have two swfs A and B, and at runtime, swf A loads swf B, and I wish to share code between them, to minimize file size and download times.
If swf B has some code (say. com.blah.HelloWorld), I tell the compiler to have swf B's source in swf A's classpath, but only do a compile-time link and not actually compile com.blah.HelloWorld into swf A
This works, and I have tried it, using a the -includes and -externs compiler options.
However, My problem is that I wish to do this the other way. i.e. swf A and B (and potentially swf C) all need com.blah.HelloWorld, but I want com.blah.HelloWorld to be compiled into just swf A, have it as an external reference in swf B ( and potentially C as well.)
I tried doing this using the externs and includes, but I get ReferenceErrors when I do this.
I want to do this without a having a separate rsl, so I can reduce the number of http requests.

I want to make an app that allows the user to add their own content (pics, movie clips, songs) and then the app saves/exports the content as a SWF so that the users can use the exported swf wherever they like. Can this be done? What do I need to look into?

I'm animating a brick path forming brick by brick.I used a single brick symbol and repeated it over and over until it formed a path.The file was a lot larger than I expected it to be since I used really only one brick. Does the fact that I have a slew of layers explain why my file is on the heavier side?Would the file be smaller if I used a single image of a complete brick path and animated a mask to reveal one brick at a time?

I have radioButton controls that are being added to an otherwise empty movieClip. The height of the radioButtons are about 22, and the associated textFields (which I am using so I have finer control) are about 25 high. Once the two buttons are added the movieClip reports its height as 130, which is kind of crazy. I know that textFields have default heights, but tracing the height out of the textFields associated with the rb controls only returns 25, as I said above. Here's some code.
var box:MovieClip=new MovieClip();
var startX:int=0;
var startY:int=0;

I have a Mac and a PC - I have apple specific stuff on the Mac, everything else on the PC. My Adobe software is all on the PC. I like using the PC - bigger screen than the Macbook. Problem is that Adobe is effectively forcing me to use the MacBook.
Now I can use Flash to build cross-platform stuff from my PC, but I have to create all the certificates and profiles on the PC. If I want to do IOS development on the Mac I have to generate new certificates and profiles.
So switching between using flash/Flash Builder on a PC and native development on a MAc means continually regenerating certificates. If I had a desktop and PC latop, I could install on both, but not a PC and a MacBook. I am totally fed up with Adobe for this stupidity. If anyone knows differrent about the need to regenerate everything according to platform,

Flash - 8 : Above is an example of what I would like to do/have done. I've gotten as far as loading the "loaded.swf" into the "start.swf" but my problem is I'd love to use that little loading action I made earlier without copying and pasting into the new movie the same actions for a different link. So, how do I load "loaded2.swf" into "loaded.swf" via the link in "loaded.swf"?

I am creating a Flex application with a component that displays various dynamically loaded SWFs, one at a time (kind of like a kiosk). These loaded SWFs are created in Flash IDE, not Flex. They will not be created by us (we will provide a .fla template but that's it), so I am loading them into a separate SecurityDomain.
My Questions:
I want the application to be able to call methods inside the loaded SWF. To do this, would I just call Security.allowDomain("domain original app was loaded from") in the startup process for the loaded SWF? I want the loaded SWF to be able to throw events that are caught by the application. Can I accomplish this through the SWFLoader.swfBridge property? I am defining an interface for the methods inside the loaded SWF. But, I don't want to leave the implementation up to the customer. Instead, I want to provide another SWF that contains the interface implementation and have it be a constraint that the customer includes it in their SWF. I am not very familiar with the Flash authoring environment, how would it work so that the interface implementation SWF exposes its methods in such a way to be accessible to Flex? Is there a way to sign the SWF so that the Flex application knows that it is dealing with the original, not a spoof? How would the Flex code pass in arguments, since it is across SecurityDomain boundary -- is there marshalling involved (say if I want to pass in a Dictionary or some kind of object graph)? The Flex application may load hundreds of these smaller other SWFs during its lifetime. How do I make sure it doesn't keep using up more memory? I plan on using SWFLoader.unloadAndStop() and clearing all references in the Flex object that refers to it. Is this enough? Will the AppDomain for the loaded SWF be torn down automatically so that the class definitions are no longer in memory?

Does anyone know of a workaround for loading an AS3 swf into an existing AIR/Flex (Flex 3) application and having the loaded SWF retain its own reference to its stage (not the loader's stage)?
I've tried the loadForCompatibility property on SWFLoader, but that isn't giving me the behavior I'm wanting. The loaded swf still has the main AIR app's stage set.
