Actionscript 3 :: Some Flex Properties Not Available In Flex 3.2 SDK
Jul 19, 2011
I recently added Flex SDK 3.2 to the list of compilers in my Flex Builder installation. (I know I am working with kind of outdated SDKs :( ). Ok, so when I changed the SDK version to 3.2 for an existing project, I couldn't find the properties buttonMode, useHandCursor. And the Filter classes like GlowFilter and DropShadowFilter were not available. I was able to use them once I switched back to SDK 3.0.

I have an Flex-Object with for example 3 properties.
myObj.prop1
myObj.prop2
myObj.prop3
I like to generate 3 Comboboxes to show the data.
No problem if I do it hardcoded in sourcecode.
But how can I find the prop1 to prop3 at runtime?
If next time I have 5 properties with different name it should generate 5 combos.

In my example below I have several objects. I want to change the label of all objects in one go, without calling each element by id. I know how to do this in HTML, but not in Flex.
CODE:
This is how I would usually set the color of 3 objects to grey in one line.
CODE:
Is there any way I can change the labels of all 3 buttons with a single line of code similar to the jQuery example?

I have a Flash Builder application which uses URLs within its code and I want to be able to change these URL values without having to recompile my application, i.e. I want to have a plain text file I can edit which is used to populate these URL values when the application begins. I've worked out what feels like a kludge to do this with ResourceBundles, but maybe there's a better or more straightforward way to go about this.

Over the past three weeks, I have lost at least 120 man hours because of some lesser known functionality in ActionScript 3. One of the problems was that, with Internet Explorer, if there are too many messages sent through LocalConnections, it will slow the messages sent through, but in the standalone player and in Firefox, this threshold is significantly higher. Another was that the static values of a class are instantiated even if the member itself is not being used:[code]Since FooClass had a static reference to a Singleton, that Singleton was instantiated so when I loaded a Module which used that Singleton, it would bind to values in an unpredictable way.Additional cases where things behave in an unexpected way:
So here's the question (and I'm sorry for omitting this in the original post), is there any consolidated documentation for this type of behavior anywhere? Is there any (even non-Adobe) documentation on these issues (websites, forums, books, ANYTHING)? I know that these things are definitely easy enough TO document, but has anyone done so?

In regards to as3 project: Is there a way to inherit the properties of a given DisplayObject? I am looking for a single method that will grab something like the x, y, width, height, color, etc. Whatever is involved in the common classes between the two display objects.
Edit:
I don't think I was clear enough... Let me give an example of the type of functionality I am looking for.
var sp1:Sprite = new Sprite();
sp1.x = 30;
sp1.y = 30;
sp1.width = 500;
sp1.height = 30;
var tf1:TextField = new TextField();
tf1.inheritTransform(sp1);
So, in this case I know that the method 'inheritTransform()' doesn't exist, but I am wondering if there is something similar. Or maybe I am missing the point of extending a class in some way? I don't see how the two would relate in such a case.

I have a Rect object that I'd like to create and set its properties only once. After that, I want to just modify its properties since it already exists. This is my general idea
if(theRect == undefined){
Alert.show("creating");
var theRect:Rect = new Rect();[code].............
but can't get the desired effect. Everytime this code block runs, and depending on which version I've used, it either gives me a "can't access null object" error or the if statement always evaluates to true and creates a new Rect object and I get the "creating" Alert. What's the right way of creating that Rect but only if doesn't exist?

I have a simple AS3 class that just holds private variables. Each private variable has a getter function, but not all of them have setter functions. At runtime, Is there a way of telling which properties do not have setters but are read-only? Then I can decide to give the user an input field to edit the properties that have setters.

I have the following problem in AS3. I have a string like this one: "prop1:val1,prop2:val2,..."; I want to split and parse the string to obtain a dynamic object like this one: {prop1:"val1", prop2:"val2"}.
The simple way to solve it is to cycle through the string values and to do[code]...
Since I know the property names I expect, this works for me, but doesn't seem to be an elegant solution. I'm wondering if there is another way in as3 (similar to the reflection api in java).

I'm building a Flex/AIR application that connects to a remote server, the URL of which changes depending on the environment (development/production, and possibly others). For now, this URL parameter is hardcoded in my root application MXML file but it means I have to change it everytime I build my app for a different environment.Is there a way to externalize such a parameter so that when Flash Builder automatically builds my app (in development mode), it uses the development URL

Is it a bad idea to inject data into an itemrenderer. The reason I ask this is because the state of each item is dependent on different changing data sources. So the original data is used to just display a new item, but there could be two to three other data collections that would be needed to determine the item's behavior. Is there a better way to do this? Should I be creating a custom DataGroup with the other data sources as properties on this custom container and then reference the data sources from the itemrenderer to the parent?

I'm doing some Actionscript work right now and I'd like to know whether there's a way to initiate an empty object's value programatically like this:
var myObj:Object = new Object;
myObj.add("aKey","aValue");
To add a property called aKey whose value is aValue.I need to create a "Dumb" (data-only) object to use as a parameter to send via POST. So I don't know offhand how long and/or how many attributes it's gonna have.

Previously I post a discussion on this matter on Flex Adobe forum and still don't understand what needs to be done. So, I'll try my luck again on stackoverflow. I'm using drag and drop data binding functionality in flash builder 4 on a data-grid. However, the data I need to show need to be query from another object.

I've written the following custom component, SubNavBar.mxml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" height="100" width="300"
creationComplete="init()">
<mx:Script>
[Code]...
Whenever the trace function runs in init(), the property menuItems returns null. I don't seem to have this problem with other variable types, like Boolean or String. Is this due to the size of the XMLListCollection object? How can I set up this SubNavBar custom component with XMLListCollection property and bind it to a control in the component?

I'm trying to make a simple flash application providing interface for taking tests as a high school assignment. One of the requirements is to use an XML file as data source.Now, having a List component bound to the XML file with questions consisting of data such as question body, question type (ie. single choice, multiple choice, open, image etc.) and possible answers (where applicable), I was wondering if I could add some additional data (and what is the best possible way to do so) to each question upon its transfer to the List component.
I am trying to achieve two main goals with this: firstly, to mark the questions to which an answer has already been given, like with such code in ItemRenderer class:
<s:Label color="{data.color}" text="{data.label}"/>
Where data.color would be set whenever the user gives an answer to a question.
Secondly, while at it, I thought of such possibility as a great way to store answers given to particular questions. In this case, the Class of the answer object would have been Object, since there has to be many type of questions (where the answer could also be a Bitmap for example).

I have the problem that when I use a component from an existing Flex Library in my AIR project, the values that should be loaded from the appropriate locale .properties file are not loaded. The values are always null.
I am using Eclipse and have created an AIR project that refers to the existing Flex Library (of which I have the source code). When I use a component from that library it calls the following code:
var _resourceManager:IResourceManager = ResourceManager.getInstance();
var res:String = resourceManager.getString('resources', str, params);
"str" and "params" have valid values but res is always null.The properties file is located within the assets directory of the Flex library. I am deducing that the properties file is not being loaded (for some reason). This Flex library works for other Flex projects so it has to be something about the way my project is set up.
I have my compiler settings set to: -locale en_US Is there something special that AIR projects need to do to ensure that they can refer to properties files?

In Flash Professional, I have a MovieClip and that clip has children. Let's say the parent clip is a night sky and the children are different instances of a star MovieClip that animates in a loop. This whole thing compiles down to a NightSky.swc which I use in Flash Builder as part of a larger project.
In Flash Pro, I position the child clips with a high level of precision. From there, I want to assign properties to these "stars." Say, I want to assign "galaxyId" and "isRedGiant" but (and this is key) I want to edit those properties in Flash Professional and have those value accessible in Flex.[code]...
