Actionscript 3 :: Store Reused Static String Constants In Flex Application?
Jun 10, 2009
I have two Cairngorm MVC Flex applications (a full version and lite version of the same app) that share many Classes. I have put these Classes into a Flex Library Project that compiles as an SWC. Both applications use some static String constants. Right now, I am storing these in the ModelLocator:
package model
{
[Bindable]
public class ModelLocator
[Code]....

I am trying to set some public static constants on a class conditionally by passing variables to the compiler e.g. -define=CONFIG::ENVIRONMENT,'testing_server'
[Code]...
Obviously this means I have to tinker with long command line setting each time. I thought my initial approach was possible given the documentation and various tutorials I have read.

I have a class ErrorMessages which holds all my error messages as static constants. So I could access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD_INVALID or ErrorMessage.PASSWORD_TOO_SHORT. I want to know if it is possible to have separate classes that hold subset of these constants and access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.INVALID or ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.TOO_SHORT, etc. This way I can more structured static structure and makes it much easier to use autocomplete. I tried few different ways and couldn't figure out if this was possible..

Say you have a web application that has a lot of business rules built around if-then comparison of String constants. These are used on both client-side and backend code, and at the moment are hard-coded badly throughout both places with lots of duplication and sometimes errors. What's a sensible way to refactor them out? Unfortunately, in most cases they must exist as using polymorphism would be much more hideous. Anything specific for flex/java? Is there an easy way to keep all those constants in one place and compile it into both client and server code?
Edit: I'm really looking for a way to share string constants between flex and java with compile-time checking of everything.

What is the most proper way to store "global" constants for a flash app:
a static data class
a dynamic data class
a dynamic data class via getter/setter

I am working on a Flash site template for which I am implementing the possibility for the users to change the theme dynamically while the site is opened.Basically, the site will have a few themes available and when the user selects a new theme, all of the site objects will change their properties (colors, alpha, fonts, etc) to fit the new theme.
And my questions is what is the best approach to sending the theme information to all of the objects in the site.I was thinking of making a static class called "Theme" and when the objects need a property, they will call a static getter of the Theme class that will return the appropriate property value for the object.But, from my understanding, static properties are quite slow and seeing that I may need quite a lot of them, maybe more that 100 for the whole site, will this approach be too slow ?

I am working on an StoryBoarding application,it is a slide based application in which the authors can put several components like image , sound , captions etc in each of the slide.A collection of slides will make a storyboard.This application will be deployed on a web server (sharepoint + IIS , and php+apache), and several users can collaborate with each other for authoring or reviewing the storyboard.In my application I also want to support auto save ,which will keep on storing the state of the storyboard.User can also save at any point of time by clicking the save button.I am confused about how to store the state of the storyboard.
1)Presently I am doing this by passing all the storyboard data to a dot net web-service and then that service is storing images,caption etc in their respective tables into a database .2)Another approach possible is to store the model of the application as a serialized object into the db , which will be more convenient since separating the components of the model (like images,captions etc..) will not be required and also restoring the state of the objects in the application will be easy . I have two doubts about using approach 2 :-i) I want the the saved storyboard to load quickly, for which I would like to support the partial so that lighter objects like caption can be loaded quickly but other heavier objects like image,video etc can be loaded on demand. Using approach 2 , do I have to send the whole data in one go or is there way to support partial loading ?

I have declared some public static consts within a class Instrument. So that I can hopefully access them like Instrument.SAX, instrument.HARP, etc. etc. But when I go to trace out or compare the consts, it gives me this error:

I've programmed a Java application using BlazeDS and Flex, but i think the problem also occurs in any ajax style application. It's a monitoring application, so requests are made regularly to the server. The browser has stored a large amount of temporary internet files on the client pc even getting it saturated. How I can avoid this? I have seen some articles that say to include variables in the html header as:

Is it possible to reference a control in an application from a static function?
What I have is a Viewstack containing VBoxes stored in separate controls. Ex:
<mx:ViewStack id="content" width="100%" height="100%" resizeToContent="true">
<controls:Login/>
<controls:Dash/>
[Code]....
Once I get logged in on my login control, I would like to change the selected index of my ViewStack. From my outside controls, I cannot reference my ViewStack by name. I can reference a public static function from an outside control however I cannot refer to the ViewStack from within that function.

SkinParts are a great way to add event handlers and logic to an object that is instantiated in the skin, away from any business code. Often, though, I find myself wanting to do the opposite, and define parts that will be used in reusable, skinnable containers in the parent mxml files which will be inserted into the skinned containers.
What's the best practice for when you want to be able to define a control and a skin which can be reused with different controls inserted from outside the skin? Edit: A better way to put this might be that I want to use something that works a little bit like a SkinnableContainer, but that isn't limited to one area where content can be placed.

One of our application is implemented in flex and adobe air. We want to have the user press combination of keys, say 'ABC', and have the keyboard return a different character, 'FOG', to whatever app is in focus. This should work even if app has no focus.
Will it possible in Adobe Air/Flex? If yes, provide me some examples?

I have a Facebook application that has a picture gallery. It's build in Flex 4. I want to allow users to link to a specific image. How can that be done?
The only way I see this being done is adding a GET var like &my_picture=asd.jpg in the Facebook page URL, but I don't know how to read that from the iFrame.

How can I have a constant in a Flex application which I could apply at several places in a Flex CSS file? For example I may have a background color which is the same in several UI components and then I would like to have this color set in only one place and reused in all style clauses. Something like ...
public static const myColor = "#00FF00"...
component1 {
backgroundColor: myColor
}
component2 {
backgroundColor: myColor
}

Know how to we store data for flash application? As im not using any server-side script, it is not possible to connect to database right? 2 things i managed to found by google it are SharedObject and XML. But later i found that it is not possible to modify data in XML using flash without any server-side script. For sharedobject, it seems not possible if i want to store the information of a list of users, as the instance of shared object can only hold the latest data.

My game stores levels in large strings. Not very long, the length is about half my desktop on a 1080p screen.[code]...
Flash IDE tells me that I will need to end the string literal before a new line. I can't, since it's too long. (For the IDE, not flash enviroment)

I want adobe sockets to send "customized" class object to a server socket(WinSock2). I used socket.writeObject(myClassObj). Actually My flash application and windows application works for string buffer but not for object.
Code:
//Flash
var buffer:String = "God Bless Us";
socket.writeUTFBytes(buffer);
// WinSock2
iResult = recv(ClientSock, recvbuf, recvbuflen, 0);
Is there anything I must do before writeObject() is used.?

I basically need to store a string of characters from an input text box and have them displayed at the last frame of the quiz. I declared the variable holding the input text as _global.player in the first frame, and upon clicking the start button the code is:
on (release) { _global.player=player.text; gotoAndStop (2); }
These variables are not referenced again until the last frame of the quiz, which reads thus:
stop();playerdisplay.text=_global.player;score.text=_global.correct;'Endng Comments Generator'if (_global.correct<=3) { phrase="Try a little harder next time";}if (_global.correct>3 + _global.correct<7) { }comment.text=phrase;
Yes, I know the global.correct coments are not yet complete, but i dont think that should be causing any issue with the playerdisplay.text (the dynamic text box to display the player name). If anyone could give me a hand that would be great. Nothing appears in the dynamic text box when the final frame of the movie loads.

I'm building my first AIR application after two years of building Flex applications with a SQL Server database, using ColdFusion CFCs and .NET as WebService interfaces.I want to create an AIR application with static data and I'm trying to figure out the best way of doing this, and how to do this. I have several related pieces of data.Should I store all the data in XML files and read it directly from there? Or should I use the built-in SQLite database? If I use the SQLite Database, is there anyway to have the data pre-populated with the application, or does it have to be built each time the application is loaded?

It is possible to call variables using this[ "stringname" ] for instance, to refer to a variable called "stringname".
However, when referencing a static variable by the name "stringname", the "this" attribute no longer works if applied.
Is it possible to use this technique with statics?

I'm wondering if its possible in flash to be able to call a static class function via its name as a string. I know for you're usual case you can do this to call the function 'func'
Code:
this["func"]();
func():void
{
trace("I'm a function");
}
However I'm wanting to do this from another static function and in a static function you obviously can't use the 'this' keyword. I've tried just omitting it, or replacing it with the class name but neither work.
