Flash :: Debug - Flex App Compiled With Eclipse Fdt Doesn't Show Line Numbers On Errors
Mar 28, 2011
I have firefox 3.6.15 with flash debug version 10.3. whenever an error occurs a popups comes up with the error and a stack trace but it does not line numbers of each leaf in the stack trace which makes it more difficult to debug. how to configure it to actually show line numbers ?
I think it may relate to how I compile my flash application. (i think!) i use eclipse FDT 4.2 to compile and i added the following compiler flags: -debug=true -compiler.verbose-stacktraces i think these parameters should be enough but I may be wrong.

I've migrated to FDT from flashdevelop and kind of have a hard time getting things to work the way I'm used to. In Flashdevelop, you could easily choose if the compiled swf was a release or debug version. In FDT however, it seems like there is no way to compile a version that has debugging information without it automatically opening up the debug perspective with a ton of debug windows, a profiler and actually entering debug mode.
As an extra plus, I keep getting a message saying "This feature is only available in FDT Max", although from what I know the debugger is included in the free version. Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do or should I just get used to this new way of working?

There doesn't seem to be a way to access stack traces for a released version of a Flex app running on a generic user's non-debugger version of flash. I can still get access to the error number, but that's just not good enough in some cases.
Was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to approach this. All I can think of is logging as many events as possible in some buffer and then dumping that to the server when a crash happens. I've implemented this and it's ok but, unfortunately, adding logging all over the place doesn't seem very practical if your code base is reasonably extensive. But maybe there's a catch all way to log all sorts of stuff in some simple way that I have not thought of - some sort of centralized listener? Or maybe some other approach?
Will take any advice (although ideally skip the "you should test your app before you release it"?).

I've got a strange situation; when I run a Flex app from Eclipse (i.e. click run as web app), my remote calls always hang. In Firefox, they return as failed. But when I open up a browser and browse to my .html file in the bin-debug folder, the remote calls work.

I want to release my flash application not in release mode but in debug mode to see result of trace() after releasing the app.
I don't care that debug mode makes processing speed little slow.Except for processing speed, are there disadvantages to release flash application which was compiled in debug mode?Is it possible that the app throws exception or Flash Players of the app's users crash due to debug mode?

I compiled a simple AS3 project using Flex 3.5 (also tried Flex 4.1) to create a small swf which draws a simple red square on screen. Nothing too complex that requires special flashplayer support (see code below)
package
{
import flash.display.Sprite;
/**
[Code]....
and tried to load it into a AS2 swf I have compiled using Flash CS4. But that just didn't work. I don't get any errors when loading and the AS2 swf can load any swf, either compiled in AS2 or AS3 by Flash.

I am trying to debug application which fails on me silently online. I am a 100% certain that I am running the flash debug player. To even make sure I am not losing it, i throw an Error ON PURPOSE. But flash shows not a single stracktrace in the browsers. I am kind of close of losing it. Any clues ? I am trying this on chrome, and firefox. WTH? Compiling with FDT, debug mode, even set the compiler argument debug=true. This is normally not the case.

I installed Eclipse with Flex plugin. And I found in my current workspace, IntelliSense can only show the public methods, it cannot show me the protected methods (but it can compile and the app runs well).However, in other workspaces, it works well.If I create a new workspace, it's the same, that the IntelliSense can only show me the public methods, not protected methods.

when I export a bin-release of my application, all my text fields have a different line spacing from that of the bin-debug version. How is this even possible?
Has anyone else come across something like this before?

I am using the Flex Builder 3 debugger almost every day and it's starting to be a real pain that the 'Variables' tab in the 'Flex Debugging' view doesn't show local variables, only 'this' is displayed.
Also I can not add Watch Expressions for local variables.
Am I forgetting something here or is the debugger just very limited?

I'm having some trouble with my component. Every time I make a change to the code in the linked .as file I have to literally close down Flash and re-open the file before I convert to compiled clip and test it. If I don't do this Flash will display old errors from the previous compilation. I've tried everything I can think of, but for some reason Flash won't read in the most up-to-date version of the code when I save it, only at startup.

I am working on a feature for an application that requires Flex 4 functionality. Due to some migration issues of the application from Flex 3.5 to 4.0, I have decided to implement this feature as a module that is compiled with Flex 4.0. The theory is that the application would remain compiled in Flex 3.5 and load the module when it needs it.[code]

I'm trying to create/write a custom flash video player program which I want to compile into an .exe after I'm happy with it.The tricky part is, I want my other windows application to be able to specify a path to a video in the hook to open the .exe video player. Example .... When clicked inside of my Custom .Net application, I will open a link to my video program with a hook for which video to play as such...
Target: "C:VideoPlayer.exe" -C:VideosExample.flv
how I can do this in code of my video player? I am willing to vary my format of handling this to accomplish my goal. have thought about reading from a text file and pulling the path to the video from there and then deleting the text file later, this is a last resort however as I would like very much to use a command line hook instead. Please give me any suggestions or ideas and or samples of code.

I'm currently trying to implement an automated bug reporter for a Flex application, and would like to return error messages to a server along with the function/line number that caused the error. Essentially, I'm trying to get the getStackTrace() information without going into debug mode, because most users of the app aren't likely to have the debug version of flash player.My current method is using the UncaughtErrorEvent handler to catch errors that occur within the app, but the error message only returns the type of error that has occurred, and not the location (which means it's useless). I have tried implementing getStackTrace() myself using a function name-grabber such as [code]
but that will only work because of arguments.callee, and so won't go through multiple levels of function calls (it would never get above my error event listener).Anyone have any ideas on how to get informative error messages through the global error event handler? There seems to be some misunderstanding. I'm explicitly avoiding getStackTrace() because it returns 'null' when not in debug mode.

I am using Eclipse to work on a large Flex project. Whenever I have an error in an actionscript file, it shows nothing in the "Flex Errors" section of Markers but when I open the file that has the error it shows a question mark next to the line where the error actually is.Is there a way to show these questions marks in the markers section of Eclipse?

In flexbuilder 3 for some mxml files I can purposely put in syntax errors and the compiler will seem to compile the specific page(but actually not compile it) or report any errors for that page. Is there any way that you know of to get the compiler to report the errors to me so I can get it to compile the page. I've tried rebuilding all and cleaning the project already.

I'm trying to show some data that's integers but the BarChart is using fractional values on the axis which makes no sense in this scenario. Is there any way to force the chart to only use integer values on the axis? I don't know the range so it could be anything from 1 to 10000000, so I can't just explicitly set up everything.

I can't seem to find anything that would let me to easily show a Number in a label, textinput, etc. with comma separation.
like in a label, show number 123456.78 as 123,456.78
[Bindable]
private var num:Number = 123456.78;
<mx:Label text={num} />
Obviously I could just create a function, but is there a more simple way?

My first attempt involved using LoadVars and "load", and only calling loadMovie if the file successfully loaded (found the technique somewhere out here). However, I found that the ProcessRequest function in the HttpHandler was getting called twice when the file does exist. Makes sense - once for load, once for loadMovie.Now I'm using MovieClipLoader instead (also found this technique out here). This way does call ProcessRequest only once whether or not the file is found. But my problem is that the onLoadError function is only working when I give it a bad URL. If I give it a good URL that passes a bad filename to the handler, the handler throws an error, but my onLoadError function doesn't seem to recognize that there's a problem - I just get a blank area where the error message should be showing up.Here's the relevant AS2 code:
function CheckFileExists(inFile) {
var mclListener:Object = new Object();
mclListener.onLoadError = function(target_mc:MovieClip, err:String){
[code].....

Eclipse has a built in functionality to find unused variables (and methods too I guess). Flash Builder 4 is built on top of Eclipse but it doens't have that functionality. Do you know any plugin to achieve that functionality? Also, if you know any other kind of plugin besides SourceMate to improve Flash Builder let me know.

What's the simplest way to see where warnings and errors come from, on vizzy?
Here's a few instances I see on my mac. Quite different from the screenshots we can see on its wiki:
Warning: 'flash' has no property 'prototype'
Warning: 'StageVideo' has no property 'prototype'
Warning: 'AsBroadcaster' has no property 'addListener'
Warning: 'AsBroadcaster' has no property 'removeListener'
Warning: 'flash' has no property 'prototype'
[Code]...
I can now see VizzyTrace.swc is required for many vizzy functionality. But even after considering all that (and enabling debug flag on the FLA, replacing trace for trc, setting up the "extra options" and adding the SWC) I still see nothing.
Now every trc line is prepended with an almost useless (I can control traces just all right and easily induce where they came from) file name and line number under Flash Professional's own output when I "Test Movie" but not even then will Vizzy show those lines. Not to say after the SWF is compiled and I'm tracing on the browser.

I have created a Flex custom preloader, exactly like it is done in this example: [URL]
Now when I implement this, is seems to work fine on my computer in FireFox and Chrome. I publish it on the server, refresh my cache and reload the application and I do get my customized preloader.
But on a friend's computer, the screen stays white for a while, and then for a second or so it shows the preloader, but the indicator is at 100%.
So the loading already happened before it showed the preloader.
