May 5, 2011Could tools like SWFAddress be used in some clever ways to alleviate an existing client-server architecture. I see possibilities to even introduce REST-like pattern mapping or something like that.
What I am currently doing is following all the Cairngorm guidleines, which has already led to a bunch of commands which all make sense, but inclusing the business delegates, and all that stuff, I am getting into a hard time extending and refactoring the application Anyway, what I thought of was somehow reducing the number of application events flying around, and the number of commands responding to them. Actualy, I am quite OK even coupling the view with some logic, if I can get rd of some layer complexity.
What I mean by that: perhaps, I could bind a button click to a url pattern (or use SWFaddress to change the url globally). On the other end, I wll be waiting for changes of the url, reformat it, and pass it onto a service delegate, which has the necessary mappings in mind, so it knows what method to call, or it could even pass the url directly to an HTTPSErvice. The delegate will then deal with the server response, and update the model, which through the bindings will update the view.
I am not going to completely ditch commands. I thing that they are good for scheduling of the internal interactions (within the client itself), but I'd like to abstain from using them for communication with the server.

Now generate link report via -link-report for this SWF and load it via -load-externs. Size of the SWF now is 33.174 bytes.
If you check link report now, you will see that some framework classes like mx.modules:IModuleInfo or mx.utils:LoaderUtil are still there.

Apr 25, 2007I've been reading up on the Cairngorm architecture that Adobe recommends as best practice for devevloping RIA's in Flex.http:[url].....I recently purchased Flash CS3 and want to find a way to implement Cairngorm in my upcomming RIAs that will be built in Flash instead of Flex. I've created my own version of Cairngorm that uses almost all of the features and classes described in the Cairngorm architecture.
The biggest challenge for developing a Cairngorm architecture in Flash is that the architecturerelies heavily on Flex data binding to update the view when there are changes in the model. As far as I can find, there are no such capabilities built into AS3. This leaves me with a few not-so-desirable options.I could write my own data binding classes, or try to migrate the data binding classes from Flex.
each view class that can respond to changes in the model implements an "IBinded" interface that contains one function called modelUpdated. These classes register with a 'bind list' when they are instantiated, and any command that causes a change in the model also calls a function cycles through each registered view class, calling the 'modelUpdated' function to signify that the model has updated.This is a reasonable solution for a very simple application with very little model data, but as the application increases in complexity, it does not scale, because there is no way for a view class that is binded to an object in the model to know whether or not that object has changed - instead, EVERY view class that responds to changes in the model must check the current value of whatever objects they bind to and see if there has been an update.
Flex :: Make A Container Resize Based On The Size Of Its Contents?
Mar 16, 2010I'm trying to create a Flex application that can automatically shrink based on the size of the components that it contains, so that a user can shrink it to a minimal view to see more of the HTML page it's embedded in.
I know how to change the size of the whole application using ExternalInterface, but I'm having trouble automatically figuring out how much the size changed when something is hidden or shown.
For example:
Let's say I have the following flex layout:

How can I hide one of the text fields and cause the VBox to shrink? I'm currently setting it to visible = false, but that doesn't seem to affect the parent VBox.
Once the VBox shrinks, how can I detect that the Application no longer needs so much space, and then go about figuring out how much less space it needs?
I've tried using ResizeEvent, but I haven't been able to get them to work, but I could be doing something wrong.

Jul 18, 2011What I want to do is have control over the streams so I can send them wherever I want, have it interface w/a mic and cam, and the ability to capture and record them. At this point I don't have any specific specs or limitations. It will be used in a commercial project so the license must allow for that. Free and OSS is preferably, but commercial and proprietary is not out of the question if it's worth it.
I don't see html5 as a viable solution at this point so I'm assuming it's going to rely on flash which is fine, but I do not know actionscript. I'm not opposed to learning it, and assume I could pick it up fine within a week, but keep that in mind. If I have to build something myself from the actionscript libraries (I assume they provide enough functionality) I can do so, but I'm hoping for a quicker solution than that.

For example, we want to manipulate a table in the DB, the most common task is (View/Insert/Update/Delete). And when we have more than 100 fields on the interface, it's rather boring to type them manually in Flex. Mar 22, 2011I have a component called X. I'm trying to make a menu come down from it when I put my mouse over it.
I have a mouseOver handler which changes the component's state to another state which shows an extra child component (the menu) on the lower part. This of course makes the X component grow.
I also have mouseOut event handler which makes the menu disappear by returning component X to its original state.
When I move the mouse over the component the menu appears as expected. But when I move the mouse down to the menu that is now visible, as soon as I touch it, it disappears. This way it's impossible to reach the menu.
I guess the mouseOut event is triggered as soon as I move out of the old boundaries. Is this so? And how can I avoid it? The new boundaries should now consider the extra child with the menu.

Jun 25, 2010I am developing a flash based website using mxml. My monitor's resolution is 1280x768 and is widescreen. The problem is while it appears properly in my screen it doesn't appear properly in others.
-Let scrollbars take care of it : If the screen is 14 inch screen with 800x600 resolution it appears zoomed in. So that's a problem
-Get screen resolution and resize using scaleX and scaleY : The graphic components will get resized but fonts give problem.
Flash :: Recompile Flex 4 Framework RSLs?
Jul 11, 2010Does anyone know how to recompile Adobe Flex 4 framework RSLs?
I'm using the compiler directive -dump-config to get the build config file that the FlashBuilder IDE is using for compiling my application. I then pass that config file into the mxmlc compiler so I can build from the command-line. The results of the command-line build are output to a folder other than bin-debug. bin-debug is a localtrust path, and it will an application will run from there without error. A Flash application in any other path requires configuring the Flash Player to trust that path OR that the compile be done with the -use-network=false directive. I prefer latter since I'll be distributing the results to lay users for evaluation, and I don't want to request that they modify Flash Player security settings.
The build config file doesn't specify that framework RSLs be rebuilt using the -use-network false directive. FlashBuilder itself doesn't even compile framework RSLs. It merely copies RSL swfs from the framework directory into the bin-debug. Those swfs apparently were compiled by Adobe with the default -use-network=true.

Flex :: Cairngorm 3 Presentation Model Initializations?
Jul 13, 2011I have a TitleWindow that I open up... and I have 6 states defined.I am using the Presentation model pattern for all of my views. When I tell my window to go to XXX state, the controls have to initialize since the states in flex use lazy loading. so... my PM code that says myTextArea.text bombs out and say "cannot access..." so as a work around, I made some creationComplete events on my controls to register the control with the PM. So when the state changes, the textarea finally initializes and on creationComplete calls PM.registerTextArea() which sets a reference to it. then in that function I run my code... myTextArea.text.. etc.
This seems like such a ugly hack that I hate it. Is there any way to wait until the entire state in created then call code on the PM? I have tried enterstate... but this event seems to fire before the state controls are ready.I tried to add a comment, but I guess editing is the only way I can do this...I am doing something slightly off straight PM. Every view has a viewController (as I call them). Its kinda my own hybrid of a delegate / dataprovider. But this is moot. It's the flex component lifecycle when dealing with states that is the pain.if you change state.. there is no event to say "all my components in this state are ready".only event to say "we changed state". so my code that fires on state change is trying to talk to components that aren't ready yet.So from what I see, there seems to be no design pattern or perfect way to ensure that all components are created in a state unless using creationComplete on every component in the state to register it is ready... if you don't, you get a race condition. Regardless of frameworks or design patterns, this seems to be a root issue.
I am trying to attach video to a display once I get to that state. This is done via addchild. regardless of where I do it.. I need to know that the videoDisplay is done loading before I call addchild. I even tried currentStateChange event since docs say that fires last... but alas.. the components in the state are still initializing. So it seems that creationComplete is my only option. Maybe the only sane way to keep to clean code is to create the entire thing(videodisplay and video) using as once the state is entered. I just hoped the flex framework had events to ehlp me here rather than buiilding everything on the fly in as.
Flex :: Reading Server URL From AS3 For Cairngorm Configuration
Aug 30, 2011I need to read the URL that the browser shows when a Flex application is called because I would to reference it in a mxml configuring Cairngorm remote objects. The goal I would reach is to automatically configure Cairngorm services from environment to environment (dev,test,qa,prod) without statically set the value in the mxml or other ActionScript. Since the Flex client is deployed in the root of the war of the webapp, it's enough to read where the browser is pointing.
I have written a class that is doing so:

Cairngorm services initialization is done as follow:

And the problem is that FAPDAServices.mxml is read runs before FlexGlobals is valid. Is there a point in the Flex Application lifecycle where such loaderURL is defined so that I can construct ConfigServer? When in startup events that initialization in done?

Jun 30, 2010I'm looking to create a Flash Map with multiple zoom levels. Ideally what I'd like is to be able to click onto a 'state' area, and then have the map zoom down to a sub-area (which can then either have a link or zoom down to yet another sub-area). Ideally I would like to be able to define sub-areas recursively (e.g. state area, region area, town area etc.) on an infinite level, but 2 levels should suffice. I found several solutions on Flash Den, however they can only handle 1 level. Does anyone know of any Flex/Flash libraries or frameworks which are capable of doing this? Alternately, does anyone know if this would be possible with Google Maps/KML? I already have vector outlines of the areas I would like to use in Flash.
