ActionScript 1/2 :: An Organised Vector Art Gallery?
Oct 28, 2009
I'd like to do the following - Have a master FLA and be able to import a vector graphics upon request. Something like a XML data and Flash do.I think it's possible. But will this effect the performance of the server (about 500 vector arts stored in a folder in the server)? Any ideas in how to do it in a organised better way?

I'm getting
ActionScript Code:
1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type
__AS3__.vec:Vector.ie.aro.floorplanviewer.model.buildingVOs:ConfigurationVO>[code]....
which surprises me as ConfigurationVO inherits from NodeVO.Is the compiler really not able to figure out that a Vector of a superclass should be able to hold a reference to a Vector of a subclass?

I am currently being confused by the Vector class.I wrote a beautiful XML to TypedClass parser. Works beautifully and without fault. UNTIL a co-worker noticed we got a Conversion Error for Vector.<Number> to Vector.<*>.
Every Vector I've ever tested all extend Vector.<*>.
Vector.<Sprite>, Vector.<String>, Vector.<Point>, Vector.<Boolean>, Vector.<TextField>, Vector.<CustomObject>, etc etc etc. ALL of them.
<type name="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<String>" base="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<*>" isDynamic="true" isFinal="false" isStatic="false">
<extendsClass type="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<*>"/>
[code]...
But then when I use describeType on Vector.<Number>, Vector.<uint> and Vector.<int>.
<type name="__AS3__.vec::Vector.<Number>" base="Object" isDynamic="true" isFinal="true" isStatic="false">
<extendsClass type="Object"/>
<constructor>
[code]....
Now I have accounted for these 3 vectors individually as even uint and int does not extend Vector.<Number> as I would have expected.
And my parsing function works for all types correctly again. But my confusion comes as to WHY this is the case, and why I couldn't find any documentation on the subject.

I have a large vector drawing (imagine 5000x5000) that i want to break up into separate pieces. I know that I can convert this vector drawing into a bitmap and then use the copyPixels method to create many separate bitmaps of the different regions of the original vector drawing, but is there any way to subdivide it into movieclips that just contain vector graphics instead of a bitmap?The reason im dividing a big chunk of vector graphics into smaller pieces is for performance reasons, so flash would only render a small part of this big chunk at a time (only certain regions/voxels/subdivisions are rendered at a time). But bitmaps apparently take up a lot of memory and the system im using would take much less memory if these subdivisions could be preserved in their original vector graphics form.
I imagine I could use masks somehow to achieve this effect (for each subdivision, duplicate the huge image and mask only the region that the subdivision represents), but I dont know the performance costs of masking or if this will create other problems.So is there anyway to split up a movieclip of vector graphics into smaller movieclips of vector graphics the same way copyPixels can with bitmaps?

What I want to do is to make a gallery based on the tutorial gallery here (thumbs), but I want the user to be able to choose different galleries from within the movie. I figured that I could make a loop to cycle through the galleries, then nest another loop inside it to cycle through the pics, captions and thumbs. While I wrote, I constantly tested the output with trace commands, but when I tried nesting the loop I lost all output.. I'm pretty new to both Flash and Actionscript, so if theres an obvious solution I havent been able to see it.. This is my temp XML file:

I've made a gallery slideshow before but wasn't as intuitive looking back at it now and I want to start fresh on this new project. I would like to convert a jQuery lightbox style gallery into a flash XML based AS3 image gallery with categories. I don't want to code the FLA, I want separate AS files.
This is a school project for my website. I would use jQuery and I have more experience with it but this project needs a flash component. I'm just not sure where to start and looking for some advice on how and where I could find resources. I want it to be minimal as I can make it;
- 8 thumbnails to a "page/section" with more flowed into page 2 or 3 etc. (or a srcoller)
- a few buttons for categories
- images fading in full size with a description when hovered over and a close button
- preloader (simple bar)
Esentially something like this > http:[url].........works which is using http:[url].... for the thumbnails. That might be ambitious but I'd suffice with a simple fade effect.I've downloaded some galleries out there but most of the code is messy or outdated.http:[url]... this is alright, but all the code is done in the FLA. I might break it into AS files but it depends.

In my "actions" layer I have a function that loads a gallery of a external file called gallery.swf. The swf loads successfully but I cant remove that. The only way to remove is to call removeChild(mLoader.content); I noticed that the movies loads without addChild.
But sometimes also calling removeChild(mLoader.content) the content of mLoader is not removed and still appears in the stage.

I have a flash site that I'm working with that has an xml photo gallery as one of it's menu items. the photo gallery has three pages, all three containing thumbnail images that once clicked, load the larger image. The larger image dissolves in covering the page with the image. Once you click the larger image it dissolves out returning you to the gallery.
What I want to to do is to change the first page of this gallery to a video gallery, or player, leaving the other two galleries as image galleries. I tried simply replacing the images listed in the xml document to flv files and the flv file does not load. I simply want to know what it is I need to do in order to change this one page so that I can embed videos on it.
I've attached the Action script that loads the xml gallery in .txt format

i am trying to put some things together following the tutorials on this site. I did the tutorial 'Photo Gallery Using XML and Flash'and I followed it step by step and uploaded it with all the necessary files onto my remote server (xml file, Gallery folder, fla, swf, and html) - however, when I test the movie with flash, it seems to work fine (except the description test, my question to that later), but when I test it online it shows only the first image (but displays the correct number of images in the gallery); even when clicking the next button, it keeps loading the first image the first image. In other galleries (I use the structure for multiple galleries for my portfolio) the first image never loads at all.
Also, about the description text, in between the <caption> and </caption>, can I use <strong> and <em> and <br /> to change the appearance of my text? All it says is 'null'.If you want to look at what I mean check out my portfolio in the making. The problem with the first image displaying only is under 'paintings' and both the projects in 'design - packaging'. The second problem (no picture loading at all) is on some of the buttons in 'design - identity' (where I have not changed the description text of the tutorial yet).
Again,

have a question about loading new photos into a already populated image gallery.So I have my gallery set up so first loads my stage pics. What I would now like to do is load different set of images via the click of a button.So for example the loaded gallery already has all thumbs loaded and the user can click on them to view the full size image. next instead of the user having to close this gallery to allow a new gallery to open with a different set of pictures I would like to have a button. This button will unload the existing thumbs from the gallery and load in new ones.

I have a simple landing page that im making for a website.The title to the site. Just plain simple static text but its just always edgy and aliased? I even tried making it orginally in a very large font size breaking it up and then reducing it in size. Still no luck.But when i zoom in using the right click menu its starts sharpening up and in real close-up seems razor sharp. But when the page is displayed at 100% size the text which is now much smaller is aliased.

The great thing about vectors is the data typing / autoComplete.. The thing about them that I hate is the numeric index and the resource intensive retrieval methods you need to pull an element.
so with objects:
myObject["myObjectKey"]
is great, fast, etc. BUT there's no data typing myVector[0].myProperty is fantastic for auto complete, but there's no quick index, instead a bunch of for loop logic that can get really messy in more complicated data models where there are a lot of relationships. Does anybody know of an elegant hybrid solution aside from things like
var myProperty:MyFavoriteDataModel = myObject["myProperty"] as MyFavoriteDataModel;

I have seen flash games where the player can actually draw objects. Meaning they have like a pen cursor in the game, and they can just start creating vector art. I have a game in mind where it might be a cool feature to have the user draw a few things. I bet this is a heavy subject so I am not asking for every bit of code I'd need to create something like this, but I have searched quite a lot for anything remotely brushing on this subject and clearly I have no idea what I should be punching into google.

I've imported a vector graphic from AI into my stage. When I click on the vector graphic that's been converted to movie clip symbol and drill down to the vector level, as soon as I insert a keyframe in the timeline, I no longer can use an eraser to edit the vector graphic. It automatically move up one level as soon as I insert a keyframe. Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting this behavior? I want to create a hand written effect with this vector grachic.If I draw a vector square on the stage, convert to movie cli, double double click the movie and then I am able to edit or change the vector shap but that's not the case with the imported AI file.

I am trying to use the new Vector class introduced in Flash 10. Tried compiling the code using mxmlc but am getting this error message:
Error: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Vector.
public var selectedRoutes:Vector.<Route>;
What is the general consensus about the viability of using this feature? Can you do introspection of the Vector with describeType and get the type the Vector contains at runtime?

Why would bitmap outperform vector?My Flash is for a large Kiosk, with rich media requirements and must function accurately as a counter. I want to keep everything vector for scalability. When I did a simple FPS test, I noticed my Bitmap version performed perfectly, and the all vector file was noticeably slower.
- only text and bitmap perform well, not vector
- background and clouds OK, but more layers slow it down

I'm looking to build a website that has a flash interface and allows visitors to upload vector art in a number of file formats such as SVG, EPS and AI.
I have two rather large problems...
1) I need to load the original vector art, probably convert it to FLV and display it in my flash application.
2) After the user potentially loads a number of images, adds some text, rotates or transforms some elements, I need to save the resulting composition into a vector art format that I can print.
I'm not much of an AS developer...my experience is mostly in .NET/C# & C++. I'm looking for a good library or API that provides the functionality I will need to convert different image formats and save the results. How much of this can be done using Flash / AS...? How much in C#...?
