ActionScript 2.0 :: Depths Particular To Timeline Of MovieClips?

Are depths particular to the timeline of the movieclip you refer to it? In other words, let's say you have actionscript to duplicate a movieclip 100 times, each time putting the new one on the next depth. But the code and the movieclip to be duplicated are themselves inside a movie clip. Are those depths inside that movieclip? So for instance, let's say the parent movieclip lies on the maintime. And on a layer above that is a button. Are those duplicated movieclips going to be visibly above or below the button?
A tangible example:
I would like to have a smoke/steam effect that uses duplicateMC and depths. But I need the effect to be underneath other movieclips at certain times. Can I just contain the effect inside a movieclip that sits on a layer below other movieclips on the maintimeline? Or do I need to stop the effect and do a swapdepth with whatever the last depth was?

I have this script I am writing where when someone hovers over a button it displays a popup box until they roll off. I have that function working alright, but I need the movie clips to swap depths, I realize I can do this with setChildIndex but I'm running into a small problem with my children/parent situation.
My items are added as such:
root > color_mc (blue or red or whatever) > button (this is the hover)
I have the event listener added to the button for each color, but I need it so that when the button is rolled over, it takes the color_mc and moves it to the -1 spot. I've tried writing the code a number of ways but can't seem to get it.

That code gives me the following error:
Error #1069: Property numChildren not found on String and there is no default value.

I have a timeline animation various movie clips with play bk and forward controllers for when it is pressed it display (grows, rotates etc), is there anyway of having it so on each layer there is a swap depth command to make whichever button is pressed make the mc's appear at the top?

can i change the depths of two movieclips on the same layer with swapdepths? like...
mc1.swapDepths(mc2 + 1);
it's not working for me. So i figure you can't do it with two mc's on the same layer...

I have two main clips with clickable clicks within each. I am using swapDepths on the two main clips in a tab navagation fashion. The problem is that if I click on the space between the nested clips in the top clip it actually is hitting the buttons(movieclips) on the other clip under it. Any suggestions?

why does a MC inside another MC have different _x and _y values than the main timeline?What I am trying to do right now is animate a MC inside another MC then get the main MC holding everything to move where that new MC ended animating at (it's part of a game I'm making.)
I know it's confusing but Flash shows the cursors current X and Y in the info panel, which is the same as the main timeline. Yet inside the movieclip, an x of 76 and a y of 277 on the timeline is -195 and -30.9 (respectively) inside the MC.How do I fix it so I can get the _x and _y values to match up so I can tell the main MC to reposition itself to the new X and Y (of the inside MC)

I have a bunch of movieclips in my library. Each one contains it's own class and functions etc.I put each of these movieclips on diffrent frames in my timeline.My question was, if I am going to put these movieclips, on 2 or 3 frames on my timeline what will be the impact on speed of application (in mobile afcourse).For example MovieClip2 will be put on frames 2,3 and 6.It has 300 lines of code. Is the impact noticable ?

I have a series of thumbnails that I have made into movieclips so that I could animate them. I have named all the instances. I have a main jump page to go to a particular picture. Each picture has a set of thumbnails (movie clips) that are animated on each. When I built it, they work fine by themselves, but when I created my "jump page" the smaller thumbs lose their overstate and onRelease. My actionscript loads on the jump page and to a frame that I request with no problem, but. Why is my actionscript not working?

I built my website on the main timeline with a fade in animation...stop(on the page) and a fade out animation. At the end of this fade out animation i would like it to call upon a variable to know what page to go to next.I am trying to tell my main timeline to gotoAndPlay a frame based off of a variable within a movieclip(about_mc this movieclip contains another movieclip which acts like a button(factsheet_mc)) that i have set in my main timeline.I set the variable with:
var buttonFrame; in the first frame of the main timeline
then within my movieclip i have another movieclip which tells my main timeline to play the out fade and remember a variable:

I am looking to have the timeline continue (gotoAndPlay basically) when the movieclips in the frame are visible.I'm trying to make a simple game where the user clicks differences and they (movieclips) are made visible in a table of discovered differences.When these movieclips are visible, the timeline should continue to the congratulatory frame.I was given the following code:

I have replaced 'mc1' .etc with the instance names of the table entries recording what differences have been found. However, I don't know where to put this script (i assume it's on the frame where the movieclips become visible when differences are clicked). In addition, what do i replace 'somemovieclip' with?

Is it possible to add 5 movieClip in the main timeline, and add for each movieClip a Sound object at frame 5, so that when I play the main timeline, all sound are played simultaneously. Because if I store all Sound object in array, and I do for example (see attach code). That's correct ? Because the play method of Sound class have may latency.

I have tried everything but it just isn't working.On my main timeline I have a MC called "rainbow." Inside "rainbow" I have a MC called "greenbow."Inside "greenbow" I have a MC called "meetbtn2" I want it to play frame 134 on the main timeline when you click "meetbtn2."my code inside greenbow is as follows:

I have an MC inside which consists of some images on different frames and some buttons which are supposed to gotoandStop on each of the frames. A simple gallery.
My plan is to create an MC for each gallery on my site and sit each one in a unique frame, so the main navigation btns go to a frame with an MC in it, then the MC buttons navigate within that gallery.
But the buttons aren't working.
Here's the button code inside the MC:

I'm new to AS3 so please excuse me if the question is a bit confusing.
I have 3 movieclips in my library with the Linkage names "Panel1", "Panel2" and "Panel3".
I want to create a new Array on my main timeline with the three movieclips.
i.e. var panelArray = new Array(Panel1, Panel2, Panel3);
How would I be able to do that?

I have a movie clip - it is a slideshow style mc, but instead of pictures, each frame is layers that include bulleted text, images, etc. - and it advances frames automatically with this code:

I need to set up a pause button that will stop the mc from advancing (i.e. ignore the wait function code above) and a PLAY button that will resume the auto-advancing of my movieclip. What I would like to do is play ramdom movie clips on my main time line. I've tried using the below code, but it does not work:

I was trying to access some nested movieClips from the main time line but it was giving an error. What I have is a movieClip on the stage called "dog" and inside this movieClip I have two nested movieClips called "dogLH" and "dogRH". The movieClip "dog" was brought to the stage using actionscript 3.0 and when I tried to move the moveClips inside "dog" it gave me an error.
This is the code I have:

dog.x =200;
dog.y =150;

What is strange is that if I add the movieClip "dog" to the stage manually and try the same thing it works. Any idea why it doesn't work when it is brought to stage with actionscript, but it works if I bring this manually?

I was programming games in AS2 in a way where movieclips could themselves remove, for example, when they collide with main character. If the objects where created in realtime with attachmovie then removeMovieClip, but if they where objects that where already existing because placed in the timeline, unloadmovie () was working. I know in AS3 I can delete them from the parent who created them but, most of my movieclips are thrown into a frame in the main clip editor. I mean, I use the timeline frames as level editor where I design my levels and I place the objects directly there and not create them by code. How can I remove them??

I've been programming with AS2 for a few years and I just made the switch to AS3. I'm hoping there is an easy solution to this problem. I have a class 'Actor' (extends MovieClip) that needs to hitTestPoint on a nested MovieClip 'root.World.walls' in a function moveRight(). I am an AS3 code developer but this time I need to deal with a FLA that has an instance on timeline with complex nesting of movieclips and textfields (that are named via the instance field in Flash). The problem is that events (I put in the Documentclass) on nested movieclips inside that timeline placed instance are never dispatched.
