ActionScript 2.0 :: List Of Objects And / Or MovieClips Under Mouse

Apparently it's relatively simple in AS3 using a stage mouseevent.MOUSE_OVER listener, but I need an answer in AS2, which doesn't have the mousevent listener. Is the only way to get a list of objects under the mouse cursor, to do a recursive list of every object in the file and do a hitTest to get true/false on each? There must be a simpler way, right? I've seen a bunch of comments on forums that say "use hitTest", but hitTest just returns true or false, and not with the name of an object you hit, so maybe there's a way to use it that I'm not considering?

I am creating a map of the USA and when a user mouses over a particular state,I want to display a movie clip (which is just a text list of our dealers in that state). When the user mouses out I want the list to disappear.However, I want the user to be able to mouse over the list to scroll the list and whenever I try it, obviously the state loses focus and the MOUSE_OUT Event fires.How to I get around this?Here is the code I have currently:

Is there a way to access or iterate through a list of all objects exported to ActionScript from the Flash IDE? I'm looking to save myself some hassle by just iterating through selected MCs and processing them in a certain way, without knowing their names.

I have an exhibitor list that loads from xml...and I have a booth layout that loads from a separate xml...I have two arrays set up so that the rented booths are stored first, and the exhibitors are stored in a separate array side by side...
if you click on an exhibitor in the list you will see the associated booth highlight in the mainwindow (and minimap too)...however if you notice, there are multiple entries in the list for some exhibitors, this is because they may rent several booths...I want to condense the exhibitor list to have one entry per exhibitor, but have the entry control all their booths, so if you click an exhibitor with 2 booths both of them would light up even though there was only one entry in the list...is this even possible with the list component provided by flash?

Happens that it actually assumes the correct number of XML elements (2 classes), however, I can only print data on the first container (only the time and name from the first class).

I've been reading a lot about the benefits of Object Pooling. Found some "tutorials" online, all above my skill level. Can anyone please show me an extremely simple example of an Object Pool. What my game does is creates Ball objects when the user holds down the mouse, stops when user lifts up mouse. I need to store these Ball objects in an array(or Vector), and hit test them with other objects, removing them from the stage when the hit another object. I'd like to create a pool of say 20 of so, created once, and recycle them.

I have a stage with instances of bauble_mcs on it that are attached by the document class of the main timeline (can someone tell me what the right term is here? I don't know what I call the main time line in AS3).
I then have instances of snow_mc attached by the same class. Inside the snow_mc I want to test to see if it is hitting any bauble_mcs but I don't know how!

I have a movie clip on my scene with a number of objects all prefixed with a keyword 'build' (e.g. 'build8934', 'build4920') - is there any method, array or object that I can access that would give me access to a list of objects for that movie clip?I'm intending to loop through an add events to an instance which matches the prefix 'build' and set additional properties based off that instance.x.

I'm used to using list variables/objects a lot from the Flash player in AS2, to make sure objects have really been removed, onEnterFrames have really been deleted etc, or even to make sure arrays are correctly populated etc, just for general debugging purposes.Now when clicking list objects or variables in AS3, I just get Level 0, and that's it.How do I see a list of all objects/variables in AS3?

I´m starting to learn flash cs5 a couple hours ago. Currently i´m learning how to use layers. Imagine that I put a rectangle and an elipse inside layer 1. Then I create a new layer with a photo. How can I see the list (root) of objects that are inside each layer? I know that I can use the outline color to visually identify them but is it possible to see the objects as a root?

So, events bubble up the display list. That's great if that's what you want. But what if you have objects on the stage that are not related that need to listen for events from each other? A simplified example:

Object B can listen for events dispatched by object C. But I also need object A to listen for events dispatched by object C. Also, these objects are created in different classes so I can't hard code references to each other.

I have a movieclip, let's call it "myMC", that is very long (5,000 frames) over the course of which many dozens of nested movieclips are added/removed as children to/from "myMC".Without reference to the nested clips, is there a way I can add a listener to myMC and listen for when an object is added/removed from it (something along the lines of Event.ADDED)?

I've asked this question before but had no answers... so here I go again I have a structure of objects: Top object A has as children (addChild children that is...) one or more objects B_1 to B_n. The B_n may in turn have one (1) associated object A' (Same type as top object, not displayed to begin with). When I click a B_n two things may happen:
1. If it has as associated object a A', put it on the stage (as child to B_n).
2. Otherwise it is a leaf and it does other things.
If '2' happens I want to collapse the tree, that is remove the top and all children of same type from being displayed. I thought a recursive approach should work:

I need to create a navigation scheme with a dynamic list of movieclips that cycles, the user being able to cycle through the list left or right seamlessly.For example, say there are 12 items in the list, and at any given time three of them are to be displayed, with the center one being the focus/selected item. If the user clicks on the center/focus item, it takes them to a page, no trouble. If they click on the one to the left of the focus item, the list slides right, with the clicked one becoming the new center, focus item.
So, now say that the three visible items are 10, 11, and 12 in our array. If the user clicks on number 12, the list will slide left, with number 12 becoming the focus, and the goal would be to have item number 1 become the new, right-most item in the display - thus, the visible three would be 11, 12, 1. If the user then clicked on one, the cycle would continue, making number 1 the focus and the visible items would be 12, 1, 2. This should work seamlessly at both extremes of the list.
So in one instance, I have created a single movieclip that contains all of the items in the list, plus four extra at the end, to allow the appearance of seamlessness; when the user got to the end, the entire clip jumped to the start. This works, more or less, but it's clunky and I need to find a better way.

I have this one movieclip.. which is the NPC characters for my RPG.. but i want to have my main movie in another swf.. Is there a way for me to "import" the NPC character movieclip.. into my main movie for me to use it? And.. as i have more and more scenes in different swfs.. i'll just "import" the same NPC movieclip.. so.. that one NPC movieclip will be the same throughout all the different swfs.. is there a way to do that?
I've noticed that sometimes .. people put things into files which has ".as" at the end.. which probably means that they put all their actionscript into that file.. is there like a ".movieclips" or something which allows me to do the same to movieclips that i'm reusing over and over again? lol Hope you can understand what i'm trying to describe!.. lol If you need me to elaborate more.

I am looking for a script which would it make possible to arrange different movieclips on/arround a vector object. let me explain a bit better what i mean:imagine you have 6 different illustration of flowers, all seperate movieclips.then i have an object like for example the siluette of a man in vector format. now i would like to load like 4000 copies of the flower-movieclips on top of the siluette with a little bit of random so the flowers form in a way the siluette.

I have a few movie clips running swf's and I need a play/stop button in one clip to control the audio in another clip. The buttons are in the _root clip and the audio is contained in an swf I load into an empty 'content' movie. I have labelled the frame containing the audio but can't seem to use the object hierarchy to access it. On a somewhat similar note, is there a way to have the root movie display the bytes loaded/bytes total of a swf loading over top of the root movie, i.e. in a content empty movieclip?

Any accurate description of the relationship between the Display Object hierarchy and nested movie clips? I have a movie clip, that has a few movie clips and text fields inside of it. I need access to those MCs and text fields. So, I start off with stage.addChild(container_mc). (These are just examples, by the way). Then I do
container_mc.addChild(movieOne_mc),
container_mc.addChild(movieTwo_mc), and
container_mc.addChild(textOne_txt).
I've made sure to import the necessary classes and declare my variables accordingly. Now I need to access the stuff inside the container. Let's say I need to change what the text box says. So I try
container_mc.textOne_txt.text = "Hello, world!";
That throws an error, so I try
parent.container_mc.textOne_txt.text = "Hello, world!";
That throws an error, too. So I try
MovieClip(parent).container_mc.textOne_txt.text = "Hello, world!";
That throws an error... Finally, I try
MovieClip(parent.container_mc).textOne_txt.text = "Hello, world!";
And then I give up and come here.
I've had this work before, but only by referencing the name of the movie clips in question.
Ex: MovieClip(parent.getChildByName(currentVideo.toStr ing())).gotoAndStop(2);
Is that the only way to access nested movie clips? I don't mind giving every single object a name if I have to, I'm just failing to understand if this is the right way to do things or not. And I foresee issues in the future with objects that aren't movie clips, or with dynamically generated objects.

I've been having a problem I've been working on for multiple hours now with no luck. I have movement bound to arrow keys and the user looks around via the mouse. When I shoot I want it to continue off in the direction it initially started, but what happens is if the user moves the mouse the bullets change directions with it.[code]...I think what is causing the problem is that when I push the bullets into the array they're all sharing the effects of the user moving the mouse instead of keeping their initial value.
