does anyone know the format for setting up classes in AS? Also I was wondering if anyone knows if there is "type." A type in some programming languages is exactly like a class but its much easier to call into a program. Okay right now I just need to find out the format for classes

The one thing that was never covered (that I read) was how to set up your library. As a result, I have been guilty of starting a project folder and copy/pasting all of the classes I need into each project folder. (As a result I have like 30 copies of TweenLite on my PC). I have done some searching, but the topic seems elusive... I have also read where most people use a reverse web address format (e.g., "com.site.page"). So my questions: Is there a standard way of setting up a library for your classes?WHERE does the "com" folder live on the directory (ex: c:com, or c:Adobecom, etc).How do YOU have your library set up?

This is my first attempt at external as classes and I can't get them right. I've a button set up on the stage and an external as file with the following code:
Code:
package {
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.MouseEvent.*;
import flash.display.SimpleButton.*;
public class myTasteButton extends SimpleButton {
[Code] .....
Basically I need to link an external class to the button, which will in turn when clicked play the beat_mc. I've given the button the class of myTasteButton. It's not working but I'm not getting any errors.

I have some buttons (dynamic mc's) set up with an ROLL_OVER/ROLL_OUT MouseEvent handler and have put them in an array.
Code:
var btnArray:Array = [];
for(var i:int = 0; i < 5; i++) {
var bg:Bg = new Bg();
bg.width = 173;
bg.height = 20;
bg.x = 25;
bg.y = (22 * i) + 40;
bg.name = "bg"+i;
[Code] .....
The problem is I can't seem to target the dtr mc's (Dot) at all even when they're in an array. Anyone have any strategies I can use to make this concept finally work? I've been able to do it as long as the dot mc's are a child of the button mc's, but I don't want the rollOver/rollOut effects to effect the child, therefore the separation.

I wanted to setup an array of movieclip buttons to navigate across my timeline via labels, this is where it went pear shaped.
Having spent three days reading and attempting most online solutions I couldn't find a method which worked 100% without failing in some way or another.
I've had some joy with the method below having seen a blog entry covering different ways to call frames etc and which highlighted the bugbear below :
clipArray[i].mouseChildren = false; //Hidden bugbear
I've added the full code below so hopefully it may help anyone else who similarly nearly resorted to hari-kari in trying this.
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.events.Event;
var clipArray:Array = [btn_1,btn_2]; // Movieclip's called btn_1 etc...
[Code]....
This works fine, now however my understanding of whether it is 'good' code or not is an issue, if this could be improved in any way I'd like to know why and how as the problem with learning AS3 from 2 is that often you use code having seen it online without fully grasping the detail.
Adding MovieClip buttons with fluidity and which cancel out from an array became a three day mission when you're learning...

I am doing an AS3 application. In the beginning of my AS file, I need to embed different textures as the following:
Code:
[Embed (source = "./myImage1")]
public var Image1:Class;
I have to embeed n bitmaps. Then I have to create an instance of each oh thease classes.
I want to store the names of thease classes in an array so I will be able to create an instance of a class by accessing the array.
Something like this:
Code:
var arrayOfClasses : Array = new Array();
arrayOfClasses.push(Image1);
arrayOfClasses.push(Image2);
...
Then I want to go through the array and do :
Code:
var variable : Object = new arrayOfClasses[0];
But this dosen't work! How Can I build an array of classes? Is it doable?

I have 4 defined private arrays defined in the constructor of my class.Later down in one of the methods, im trying to push() variables into these arrays, but nothing seems to happen. I tried using this.arrayname.push(), but that doesn't seem to work either.do i need to manually push them by this.arrayname[arrayname.length+1] = "";

I have a class that acts as a container for relevant data. Let's say it's a Person class.Person has a private myAge:int attribute that gets set when the program runs. In addition, the Person is added to an array and saved. Then all of the people from the array are called and ages are traced. Here is the main code of interest:
// In the Document class.
registerClassAlias("Person", Person);
registerClassAlias("AddressBook", AddressBook);

I am having problems storing an array of objects, all of which are the same custom class in an LSO and then reloading that array from the LSO without losing the class type of the objects in the list.
I know how to store a single object of a custom class and load it withe the correct class type using the registerClassAlias() function, but I cannot seem to apply this to arrays of objects.
I am trying to save an array called messageList. Each element is a custom class GameMessage with a property called gameLevel. After I load the LSO I am trying to do something like
trace("0th message is from level " + GameMessage(messageList[0]).gameLevel);
And I am getting an exception of like this:
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert Object@90fdfa1 to GameMessage.
I have registered the GameMessage class using
registerClassAlias("GameMessage", GameMessage);
and everything works if rather than a list of messages I try and save/load a single message.

I have an array of ingredients for soup as strings. These ingredients are also movieclips in my library, all linked with an identifier. I want to add the movieclips to the stage dynamically.
I tried getDefinitionByName but I keep getting an error that the variable "appel" (veg[0] in this case) is undefined. And basically, I only have a general idea what I'm doing here, so I would be grateful if someone could explain it to me or link me to a helpful tutorial.

Looked for as3-mode and actionscript-mode but nothing working was found. as3-mode can import class if it is opened in buffer (but not *.mxml files)

The examples I'll use don't do anything - they're classes without ANY members - no variables, methods, anything.
Let's say I extends Sprite and call it MySprite.
I save it in test.core
[code]...
Now I create another custom class called MyWindow that extends MySprite.
I save it in test.windows
[code]...
Then I create another class that extends MyWindows (the example I'll use is a document class - but that doesn't matter - I've tested using an instance too).
[code]...
Notice that I'm not even trying to instantiate the helper classes - just having them there throws the error.
If there is only a single helper class, everything runs fine.
Also note that - as far as I can tell - this only happens when extending one class from another package, then extending that class with more than one helper object.I'm pretty sure there's no namespace bumps or typographical errors, as this is a very pared-down version of the original application.
EDIT: seems the problem exists even without the crossing packages - even extending MySprite in the document class with multiple internal classes generates this error.

I am creating a library in AS3. Inside the library I make use of a bunch of classes/packages that need not be exposed to the end user of my lib. I want to only expose one of these classes.
I guess my questions are:
1) How are libraries commonly distributed in AS3?
2) Is there a .jar equivalent in AS3 that developers can include, but will only have access/knowledge of the classes I've declared as public?

I'm trying to import a class from a class that is located in another folder. How do you move up a directory? Using./ or ../ doesn't seem to work. Essentially I want to access a TweenLite Class but not from the document class. My class is at com/myName and the class I want to access is at com/TweenLite. import ../TweenLite doesn't work... I realize I could just copy and paste the entire Tweenlite folder again, but there's got to be a less duplicative way of doing this..

inheritance and building classes from other classes.
I have 3 classes:
gfxRoomText - changeable colour
gfxRomInter - changeable colour - interactive
gfxRoomImg - interactive - only image / no colour
The first two incorporate the same text field and functions to change colour. The second and third incorporate another class to interactive with. What is the best way of creating these classes using inheritance and how?

I am new to classes and I am just starting to follow tutorials on how to assign classes and sub classes and I am wondering when you assign a base class or class to an object(Symbol e.g movieclip) through the properties, are all instances on the stage no matter how many and what they are named influenced and is the Stage/main timeline always the parent? and just one more question, is the parents objects display list all the movieclips that are used on the stage or all the instances on the stage?
