ActionScript 2.0 :: Shuffle Function - Apply Number To The Variable That Get Loaded From The Text File
Sep 23, 2010
I'm currently doing a board game, in which you get asked questions and answer them for points. the questions get loaded from a .txt file. what I'm trying to do is that the questions appear in a random order everytime the game starts. I already have the shuffle function working, it shuffles 51 numbers (the number of questions in the game) between 51 variables, so each variable is assigned a different number and they don't repeat. My problem is that I can't figure out how to apply those numbers to the variable that get loaded from the text file. I could make many IF statements but that would be a lot of code, so I tried doing a function, but it didn't work. this is the function:

I use a variable to show the percentage loaded number in a dynamic text box. The problem I have is that it only works when there is more than 1 frame in the preloader scene.
My guess is, that when there is only one frame, the code is not being refreshed to update the text box.
ie var percentage; percentage = math.round( getBytesLoaded() / getBytesTotal() * 100);

I'm workin' on a cool project for school. I'm loading up some text from an external XML doc, and bringing it in to a flash textField.
It's working great, but I want to do a little formatting, first off, apply a bold tag or a bold font to some headings.
Here's the .text field as I have it now:
Actionscript Code:
motorcycleInfo.text = "Make: " + bikeMaker[evt.target.selectedIndex] + "
" + "MSRP: " + bikeCost[evt.target.selectedIndex] + "
" + "Ride Category: " + bikeCategory[evt.target.selectedIndex] + "
" + "Engine Size:
[Code]....
(ps I finally figured out how to wire up my mp3's so they play, and pause, I just haven't loaded that swf up to my server... so if you press the music buttons and they don't play, that's the reason.)

Im running AS2 on Flash CS4 for this: I've found a million posts on similar topics, but none seem to do what I want, even though I feel like its very simple. I've tried a ton of different codes and can't get anything to work. All I want is for Flash to pull a number variable from an external file, lets just say a txt for now. I then want to be able to use this variable for calculations within flash. The only thing I can get to semi-work is having a txt file that says MyNum=5 and then putting the following in flash: loadVariables("Test.txt" , _root);
If I trace the variable "MyNum" it will output the right value, but its as a string no matter what I do. My most recent attempt to get it to be a number is to put the following on a later frame:
var NewVar:Number = MyNum;
var NewVar2:Number = NewVar + 1
trace(NewVar2);
Despite hardcoding multiple variables to be numbers, the output I get is 51, which means its still displaying as a string. My other issue is that you have to wait several frames before the variable is recognized. Do you have to wait numerous frames to use these loaded variables? If so, is there a way I can code it so that flash will just wait until it has the variable before moving on? I can't seem to get any loading function to work for it, but I don't just want to pull my next action down the timeline some arbitrary number of frames and hope its enough for flash to pull that number from the file.

What I got.

I apparently can't pass the score to the textBox.
1. How do I convert the variable to a string?
2. How do I update the textBox? I thought I saw some special method somewhere but I'm not sure where.
3. What is the best way of updating the 'score' variable.

I have a class that loads data from a text file and puts it into an array called tdv.importedTxtArray (public var).In a separate class i have written [code]The infoArray does not then contain the imported text however because tdv.importedTxtArray is not given its popper contents until about 1/2 a second after the tdvLoader class executes (i.e: when Event.COMPLETE is run and the array is populated with strings from the external text file). Subsequently in the code above infoArray is set to a blank array.How can i get the code in my separate class to ''wait' until tdv.importedTxtArray is properly populated before accessing it.

I have an array in a keyframe - but i want to have it in a textfile instead ( so that others can edit it for themselves. But i am having difficulty doing it. At the moment I have this on a button
[Code]...
What I'd like to know is how to change the above array so that it would work in a text file (which would be easier for others to edit you see). I think i could divide the letters by : and then use some code to break the array apart at ':'. But I am not really sure. Can anyone give me some pointers? Also - if u have time to shuffle the array so letters appear in different boxes each time?

I need a text box to change height according to an externally loaded number.
ActionScript Code:
homeText = new LoadVars();
homeText.onLoad = function(success) {
if (success) {
[Code]....
This should set _root.contentMain.home_txt (the text box) to 400 height right?
Why is it not changing the height to 400?
trace (nmbr); does show 400

I have a loop that cycles through all children of an extremely small XML file, and I need to set the label and the link for each box. I started with a fixed number of dynamic text boxes, and loaded them because I knew the count, but I'd rather loop through them as I read the XML. Here is how it is now:
for (var aNode:XMLNode = rootNode.firstChild; aNode != null; aNode = aNode.nextSibling) {
trace(aNode);
trace(aNode.attributes.text);

I am trying to place a condition statement so that it will only do an action if the swf loaded into the varaible is the same or empty. I start of with loading the sample1.swf into the movieclip swf_holder
Code:
var loadSwf:Loader = new Loader();
swf_holder.addChild(loadSwf);
loadSwf.load(new URLRequest(sample1.swf));
loadSwf.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadComplete);
In order for me to get the sample1.swf to play, I create a variable so that I can just call on it

Why can't I assign a numeric value to a variable from a variable in a text file?
text file contains HowManyBands=3
actionscript is as follows:
loadNumVar = new LoadVars();
var NumOfBands:Number = new Number();
loadNumVar.load("Performers.txt");
[Code]...
within the if statement, the trace reports 3, however, if I try to use the variable later or trace it in the next frame of my video, it thinks it's 0. How can I get the Variable to hold onto the value throughout my animation?
