ActionScript 3.0 :: Change Variable On Timeline From Within A Movieclip?

I have a varible on the timeline, named "pressedleft" and i have a movieclip named animate, and within that movieclip i have another one named animate_move, on the last frame of animate_move, i want it to make pressedleft = false; but i cant seem to figure out how this is done :s

I simply want to assign a variable to the current frame of the main timeline (not movieclip timeline) I already know about _currentframe and it doesn't help in this case.

How do i correctly change a variable from an instances timeline? I need the variable hero.landing to = true when a particular frame is hit in the timeline.
I used to add the instance simply with addChild(name);
and the AS in the timeline was:
MovieClip(this.parent).hero.attacking = false;
However i add the child to the gamelevel instance like:
gamelevel.addChild(name);
and the code: MovieClip(this.parent).hero.attacking = false;
only temporarily changes the variable, it resets back to its previous immediately after the frame is reached.
For example, hero.attacking is true until it hits a certain frame at which point i want it to be set back to false. However now that i add the child into the gamelevel instance, it only temporarily sets hero.attacking to false, and then resets back to true after.

I have been banging my head against a brick wall regarding the following problem which must be very simple to fix, just can't see the answer.I have a class assigned to a movieclip called canvas. The class is called drawClass. I have called the instance of canvas on the stage 'drawingCanvas'.When I trace "drawingCanvas" I get object drawClass] which is fine. Tracing drawingCanvas.name gets me the instance name 'drawingCanvas'.This is a String variable.Basically what I am trying to do is pass the MovieClip name to another class. In my example the class 'toolBar', which can then interact with the MovieClip.
The problem is passing 'drawingCanvas.name' results in a String, so I get an error saying :TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "canvasArea" to flash.display.MovieClip.I can't for love or money find a way to convert a String variable to a MovieClip variable! I have the name of the MovieClip, I just need to tell the toolbar class. But I can't find a way of doing this as the instance on stage is an object of drawingClass, not a MovieClip (unless MovieClips with attached classes are not treated as standard MovieClips?).

I have a navigation bar movieclip that has the following EventListeners in symbol definition:

My question is, how can i cause any of these events to change a string variable in the main timeline? For instance, i would like the news_btn when clicked to change already defined variable located in the main timeline. Also, is there a more elegant way to code the above, i'm new to AS3?

With Flahs CS4 with as3 paint a rectangle F8 and convert to symbol button, now if edit the new button, timeline is like this: paint another rectangle F8 and converto to symbol: Movieclip, now the time line is like that:if in the second symbol, edit in properties, and change MovieClip to button, when I edit it, the timeline is no change as first option. What can I do to see the button timeline.

My question. How do I control a movie clips FPS independently of the main time line. I believe in the previous version of Flash this was not possible but I think it can be done with CS4 with AS3.
I have five images with motion add to them. One fades out while the next fades in. To get this to work slower then the main time line I would have to add a lot of frame for that movie clip to not run so fast. Which this will make the file size larger.
I need this movie clip to run at say 12 FPS instead of the 24 the main timeline is running at.

I'm having difficulty accessing a variable value within nested MCs. On Scene 1 in the addFullPanel function, the variable panelNames exists. However, I'd like to use this variable value within the MC FullProjectPanel in the switch function in order to load a corresponding xml file. As it stands the variable is empty within the FullProjectPanel function.

I have a menu with 4 movieclip buttons (movieclips that act as buttons) that when pressed make the timeline jump to a certain frame. The mc buttons have both "onrollover" and "selected" states. However the timeline also moves on its own, even if no button is pressed.
I need the buttons to assume the "selected" state when the timeline reaches a specific frame (as if the button had been pressed to make the timeline jump there). But I can't figure out how to do it althought I think it must be quite simple.
This is the code I'm using (controls the buttons and its on the first frame of the main timeline)

I'm converting an old AS2 file into AS3 (and trying to learn AS3 at the same time).A movie clip contains a number of different animated sequences and buttons within the application trigger these different sequences.The buttons are functional only when an animation has completed playing.
In AS2, I achieved this with a var called _root.animating which was initially set to "false" and switched to true when the animation played and switched back to false at the end of the anim sequence. The buttons checked this var when clicked. Here is some of the AS2.[code]...

I have 2 movie clips, one being loaded into a container MC via "loadMovie();"In the main movie there is a variable with no value, in the external movie there are 5 frames, each with a value to update the variable in the main movie.
IE: if on frame 1, global value = 1 / if on frame 2, global value = 2 / etc etc I'm familiar with passing variables INTO an external swf, but am stumped on how to do it the reverse way.

Why does a child movieclip only show the first frame within the IDE, regardless of where you are in the parent timeline?If you throw a movieclip with 25 frames onto the main timeline, which also has 25 frame, you don't see the nested movieclip's frame-progress while you scroll through the main timeline.Is there a setting somewhere in preferences or somewhere that will enable you to see a nested movieclip's frame position from the main timeline? Like you do with After Effects composites?

Im really new to as3, and im just trying out some stuff, but i cant get a shape to refresh and change when i change its variable using a text field.If i change the text fields text before i test it, it works, but while its running it doesnt change it again.Btw, trying to change the stroke size.[code]i just want is so that when i change the strokeSize_txt text box, it will change the stroke for the shape.

How do you tell the root timeline to root.gotoAndStop(2); from the timeline of a movieClip added using addChild?In the maintime line I have
addChild(fade_eng);
and in fade_eng I have the following on frame 20
root.gotoAndStop(2);
this.gotoAndStop(1);
But I am getting 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method gotoAndStop through a reference with static type flash.display:Stage.

I'm creating a board game which has 3 variables, p1Move, p2Move and activePlayer.
p1Move and p2Move store the p1 and p2 location on a game board. activePlayer stored who's turn it is at the moment.
I am loading a value in from a text file which changes the value of move. This all works fine when i designate a player directly:
ActionScript Code:
p1Move = [insert variable name],
but i want to designate dynamically based on who's turn it is.
Something like this:
ActionScript Code:
_root["p"+activePlayer+"Move"] = Number(this.varAmount);
so that flash changes the value of p1Move (or p2Move depending on who's turn it is) to varAmount. varAmount is the variable being read from the textfile.
Hopefully that all makes sense. Basically i want flash to change the variable associated with the active player only.

I want to declare a variable on the main timeline that can be called from anywhere in my movie. So, _global var should be the right approach. I want to declare a movie clip 'MC1' "open", or "closed" so that when it is revisited, my flash file knows the user has been there before and performs a different task from the one it does when 'MC1' was first encountered. So, i need a 'if' statement to run from the variable, when the playhead encounters the movieClip.

I have a button inside a movieclip, to which I would like to apply a rollover function. When rolled over, this button (inside MOVIECLIP 1) would make (MOVIECLIP 2) jump to second frame. I have a main timeline with a button. I need the action for this button to gotoAndStop to a frame within a movieclip, within another movieclip. I have tried on the main timeline setting the actions of the button to:
on (release){
clip1.clip2.gotoAndStop("frame1");
}
and tried:
on (release){
_root.clip1.clip2.gotoAndStop("frame1");
}
lastly:
on (release){
_parent.clip1.clip2.gotoAndStop("frame1");
}
If I double-click on the movie clip (clip1) and then double-click on the movie clip (clip2), I have several frames labeled "frame1", "frame2", etc.The button doesn't work.

Working on an RPG type flash, and I have to be able to control a text-box from quite a few locations. The one that is causing me trouble is the inventory. I need to be able to access the textbox with an instance of "statusWindow" from within the inventory clip (instance name "inventory"), so when I mouse over an item within the movieclip it will change the status window on the stage.In this instance I want to mouse over inventory.invHealth from the main timeline to get the display.itemName and itemProps are strings containing information about the item.I tried the following but it gave me a "possibly undefined" error.

I have somehow managed to change the layout of my timeline in CS4 so that it shows the layer names, across the entire window. This means I cant see any of the frames, just the layer names.No matter how many times i reset the workspace or change it, it wont come back! If i hover the mouse over the edge I get the double ended arrow that should allow me to pull the side bar over to reveal the frames but it doesnt do anything!.

I've just started working with Flash CS4 and Actionscript 3 after being away from Flash for almost 10 years.I've set up a menu that allows users to select from five sections. When users select an option, flow goes to the corresponding section of the timeline and a movieclip plays. Stop actions prevent flow from continuing past the current section. A home button takes users back to the menu in the first frame. This works just fine.The client wants to provide a 'next' button which should play through all sections in sequence when the learner clicks it. I've defined a variable which I set to true when the user clicks 'next'. I've added if...else logic to the stop actions:

This should stop flow unless the play button has been pressed setting the variable nextClicked to true. That's not what happens - flow stops even if when I click the 'next' button. I added the trace to verify the variable has the correct value and discovered that the variable value resets to false from true before it gets to this script.What am I missing about ActionScript 3 that might account for this behaviour?I have tried to read the Actionscript 3 materials but I get bogged down in the complexity of the programming requirements and the lack of depth in the examples provided.I'm sure the examples are perfectly adequate if you're trying to do what they illustrate but I haven't found an example that fits what I'm trying to do here.

In web design, you usually define a CSS style for a navigation link, which will appear when the user is currently on that page. So if I was on the "about" page, the "about" link in the navigation would be highlighted red, for example.I'm trying to do the same thing with a button in Flash. When a user clicks the button ("on(release)"), it will take them to another frame in the timeline, and, the look of the button will change to let the user know they are currently on that frame. I thought I could do this by adding a keyframe at the destination frame, then going into the button and changing the "up" frame. Sadly, that doesn't work, as it changes the "up" frame for the button everywhere.
