ActionScript 3.0 :: Can't Round Or Subtract A Large Number

Nov 23, 2010

When getting the rotation of a movie clip I sometimes get a number like this: -1.4033418597069754e-14

And this number seems to break simple math.  see my code below:

var thisRot:Number = rotation;
trace("thisRot: " + thisRot);
//outputs - thisRot: -1.4033418597069754e-14

[Code].....

How can -1.4033418597069754e-14 round down to 0? And Math.round(thisRotAbs) also results in 0.  So how can this be? And how can 180 - -1.4033418597069754e-14 = 180?

Flex :: App With Large Number Of UI Objects Is Slow

Jun 10, 2009

I'm building my first Flex custom component, in Flex 3. It is a data table based on the 'Grid' container class, with a simple text Label in each cell. (DataGrid and AdvancedDataGrid were not appropriate starting points for my needs.) The component works quite well using smallish tables, but I tried stress-testing it using a larger table, and have been disappointed by the results.

The component creation process has some slow spots, but those are in my power to optimize and aren't my primary concern. What worry me more are what appear to be limitations in the Flex framework itself.

This 'large' sample table has a bit over 7000 cells in it. This is largish, but still 1-2 orders of magnitude less than the biggest I need to accommodate. In standard Grid structure, the main portion of the component consists of a Grid with 400 GridRows of 16 GridItems each, plus a few other smaller ancillary Grids.

Once the table renders, I find the following:

Mouse-related events are slow to fire. Specifically, I have rollOver/rollOut event handlers registered on each table cell, to let me highlight the cell under the pointer. On a small table, I could move the mouse over the table very quickly, and the highlighting would follow the pointer in real-time. With the larger table, the highlighting is very jerky, changing only about twice per second, skipping over many cells.If I place the mouse cursor over the component and leave it there, my CPU is pegged (one processor core, anyway), and stays that way until I move off of the component, when it drops to idle. My component isn't doing anything at all at this point.

It feels like Flex simply cannot scale to support component trees that are this large. I shudder to imagine how it would behave with 100,000 cells. Perhaps I'm pushing the Grid beyond its intended use, but having an object per table cell doesn't seem like an unreasonable model, and ~14,000 objects in the tree (a GridItem and a Label per cell) seems pretty modest.

Asp.net - FluorineFX Mature Enough To Use For A Large Web Application?

Sep 29, 2011

I am in the planning stages of developing a large web application written in Flex and was wondering if anyone has actually used FluorineFX in a large production environment?

The documentation and online community makes it seem like it could be abandoned in the years to come and I have yet to read about it being used in production.

I have been assessing Weborb as well, but the costs are extremely high and I'm not entirely satisfied with the general workflow/setup of it. Are there any other solutions out there that I should consider?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Handling Large Files/data Within An AIR Application

Sep 8, 2009

I've run into some problems trying to handle large text files in AIR (300+ MB in size). I can open a filestream and read the file just fine and even store it into a string variable. the problem occurs when i try to manipulate this data. Im trying to get each line as an element in an array so i can manipulate this data.Here's what i've tried:1. read the file into a string variable and perform a split looking for the newline character ). this freezes the program2. i've tried reading the file in one byte at a time and putting each line into an array AS it is being read from the filestream. This not only takes long but eventually freezes.

3. i've tried splitting the final string variable which contains the entire text file into chunks to process it separately.4. i've even tried putting the file contents into a sqlite database, but this also freezes.At this point, im not sure what my options are. Is AIR even equipped to manipulate data at this level? I could use a point in the right direction

Flex :: Build A Large-scale Application For Free?

Oct 13, 2010

I want to create a fairly large-scale Flex web application that has a similar interface style to Grooveshark.

When it comes to web development, I have always used the common PHP/HTML/JavaScript technologies. Now, I want to try something new and develop a RIA using Flex.

Using PHP/HTML/JavaScript, I am able to develop my entire website with free tools. Now, I'm wondering if I am able to do the same thing with a Flex web application?

Is it possible/feasible to develop a Flex web application for free? If not, what would be the lowest cost I would need to spend? And, whatever the option, what are the tools that would be needed?

Web Development :: Page Through Large Amounts Of Historical Data Via A Web Application?

Jun 29, 2009

I have a web application that functions as a dashboard, allowing a user to see summaries of historical data to view trends, etc. As an extension to this, I want to allow the user to drill-down into the historical data if they so wish.What this will amount to is a table of time-value pairs, showing the time a particular data point was recorded as well as its associated value. The issue is that there could be a very large amount of data on record (millions of points is entirely possible), which means it wouldn't work to load all the data up front and display it to the user.

So far, my best idea is to implement the table of time-value pairs with "infinite scrolling" - i.e. the first x points are loaded and then as the user scrolls down the next x points are fetched and so on until the user reaches the end of the data (with a fixed-size cache of points, so that I don't run out of memory). The issue with this approach, though, is that there's no way to get to the end of the data without first fetching every point in between.

Another option would be to have a navigation interface with forward and back buttons, as well as some sort of date chooser so the user can quickly navigate to any data point they wish. This solves the problem of the first idea, but this navigation interface is far more clunky and less intuitive.My question is: is there some happy medium? A UI where it's clean and easy to navigate through the data but at the same time provide some method of jumping to a specific point in time?

Edits based on comments below:The development environment is flex and the database is SQL Anywhere, though the back-end logistics are less important to me than a clean, functional UI.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Memory Leak With Large Movieclip?

May 26, 2011

I'm having what strikes me as a stupid problem, but I can't figure it out myself... it could be a subtle nuance of Flash or just some knowledge I don't have, anyway... I'm making a Flash game with a main menu and multiple levels. We didn't organize our project right (just self-taught college students doing it in our free time) so we made a level before the main menu. I ended up putting the entire level, code and all, into a MovieClip. It creates an instance of that MC when you start a level (I'm sure this was a terrible idea).

But it leaks when I delete the MovieClip and create a new one (i.e. quit the level to the main menu and then start it again). It originally leaked ~6MB each time you quit and started it again, but I've tightened it up to ~1MB, but I'd still like to fix that.

I know to Garbage Collect something you have to remove references, so I've
Blanked all arraysNulled all referencesRemove all MCs dynamically added to the stage and any associated eventsRemoved every single MovieClip from the entire stage, including ones that weren't added dynamicallyNulled practically every object and variable I've only used weak-referenced events, and I've removed all of them anyway, but it's still leaking. There's way too much code for me to post all of it, so I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any general ideas I haven't thought of.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.I am trying to tween it to look pretty, but when i drag, it tweens it in relation to 0,0 of the movie clip. So the upper left corner moves to the mouseX, mouseY position.I think there is a math to figure this out, but I suck at math.

Flash 10 :: Optimizing A Large Vector Movieclip?

Apr 3, 2011

I have an extremely complicated (10 frames, 3 layers, around 200 objects per layer) vector object, and wish to create 5 instances of this object in my SWF simultaneously. Unsurprisingly, attempting such a feat causes my program to slow down dramatically.

I can freely combine the layers, convert to bitmap or whatever is needed, although the object is very often rotated in my ActionScript code, and is at the third layer of a much larger object. What would be the best (reasonably fast, as I need to repeat this process 10 times, on 10 seperate frames each time) way to optimise this object to increase the run speed without hitting load times too drastically? (The size of the object in question is 7x700 'pixels')...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Slowdown: Memory Isn't Freeing Up

Feb 9, 2010

I'm having a bit of trouble in a game application I'm building,I recently added a bit of code that makes the game more visually interesting. As you move your character around screen, it creates instances of the GFX_Dot class, which is tied to a small green dot.In the class file I have a timer which decreases the alpha of the dot until it hits zero, at which point I'd like it to delete itself. Here are the functions I've got in the GFX_Dot class:

//GFX_Dot class
public function GFX_Dot() {
randomize();[code]..........

The part at the end "delete this" is meant to delete reference to "this" and allow it's memory to be re-used, however upon running the program, it's clear that they must not be deleting themselves, because after half a minute of creating a new GFX_Dot every frame at 30 fps, the game begins to get very slow. Before adding these graphical elements the game ran snappy all the time, I'm almost certain it has to do with them not being deleted properly.

ActionScript 2.0 :: [Flash8] - Slowdown With RemoveMovieClip?

Jun 3, 2007

I'm fairly new to the use of loadMovie, unloadMovie, and removeMovieClip for external swfs, but anyways, let me summarize the problem as simply as I can. I have a shell.fla file that is currently loading in external swfs, one at a time, for a game. Here is an outline of how my shell works:

1. first part of game gets loaded in an empty movieclip (container_mc)
2. a listener is created that will listen to an event broadcaster that exists within the external swf.
3. when the listener receives the "done" message, I run container_mc.removeMovieClip() and then load part 2 of the game in a new empty clip called container2_mc.

At this point, I get really severe slowdown for some reason, and I don't know why!! Part 2 of the game is a tile based maze game which is not optimized 100%, but when I run that swf on its own (i.e. not inside the shell) it runs perfectly smooth. But when it is loaded after part 1, it goes really slow.
