Css :: Setting Up Flex / AIR Project Structure For A Large Number Of Images?
Sep 29, 2011
We build prototypes and demo applications in Flex 4.5.1 and AIR 2.7 for mobile and desktop use. These tend to involve a large number of full-screen .PNG files. Lately we have been looking at ways to segment our code for flexibility and multi-screen re-use. What suggestions do people have for segmenting the project and libraries such that compile times are minimal and images are easy to replace?

I have this code which works fine when selecting a small number of images.
public var fileReferenceList:FileReferenceList;
public function browseFiles(event:Event = null):void
{
[Code]....
However, when selecting a large number of images (1000+), the fileList isn't initialized yet when the SELECT event is dispatched. Is there a way to wait for the fileList to be initialized?

I received a Flex project but don't know how to open it in Flash builder. It doesn't contain a project.mxml or .actionScriptProperties, .flexProperties and .project files. the file structure looks like this:
(rootFolder)
-(com)
subfoldrestructure containing only folders and .as files
-(src)
-(_embed)
[Code]...
how do I make a compilable Flex project out of this?

I am trying to understand why I am not able to launch a SWF from the URL after launching mvm jetty:run on my project.The project has built successfully and produced a Falcon-WAR-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.war in the maven target directory. In this file are the following files - and includes the .swf file compiled from the Flex project.[code]The context root of my application is the same as the artifact ID of the WAR, so it is FALCON-WAR.When I launch mvn jetty:run, I get the following print to the console:However when I try to navigate to URL...on my browser, I get the following, when I expect to launch the .swf file from the web.xml definition.

my Flex project has grown to over 1 Mb in size in release mode and now I am trying to cut it up into modules.
One of my SWC libraries is fairly large and I want to use it in multiple modules, so I think I can turn it into a RSL? how can I go about turning the SWC library into a RSL? I am building with Flash Builder (Flex).

I am planning on a Flex project that involves incorporation of a lot of features.
Each 'feature' can be a component / module.
Which is preferred and what is the difference between a module and a component?

We recently built a new dev server for flex builder and installed coldfusion 8. We currently have everything working on our old server using coldfusion 7. We copied the services-config.xml and our project over to the new server. It compiled fine, I updated all references to the new server. When I try to run the flex application I receive the following error:
Warning: Failed to load policy file from http://localhost/crossdomain.xml
* Security Sandbox Violation *
Connection to http://localhost/flex2gateway/ halted - not permitted from file://ourServer/folder/ourProject/bin-debug/ourProject.swf
We created a valid crossdomain.xml file on the localhost (which I wouldnt think would be necessary since everything is on the same server)

I'm building my first Flex custom component, in Flex 3. It is a data table based on the 'Grid' container class, with a simple text Label in each cell. (DataGrid and AdvancedDataGrid were not appropriate starting points for my needs.) The component works quite well using smallish tables, but I tried stress-testing it using a larger table, and have been disappointed by the results.
The component creation process has some slow spots, but those are in my power to optimize and aren't my primary concern. What worry me more are what appear to be limitations in the Flex framework itself.
This 'large' sample table has a bit over 7000 cells in it. This is largish, but still 1-2 orders of magnitude less than the biggest I need to accommodate. In standard Grid structure, the main portion of the component consists of a Grid with 400 GridRows of 16 GridItems each, plus a few other smaller ancillary Grids.
Once the table renders, I find the following:
Mouse-related events are slow to fire. Specifically, I have rollOver/rollOut event handlers registered on each table cell, to let me highlight the cell under the pointer. On a small table, I could move the mouse over the table very quickly, and the highlighting would follow the pointer in real-time. With the larger table, the highlighting is very jerky, changing only about twice per second, skipping over many cells.If I place the mouse cursor over the component and leave it there, my CPU is pegged (one processor core, anyway), and stays that way until I move off of the component, when it drops to idle. My component isn't doing anything at all at this point.
It feels like Flex simply cannot scale to support component trees that are this large. I shudder to imagine how it would behave with 100,000 cells. Perhaps I'm pushing the Grid beyond its intended use, but having an object per table cell doesn't seem like an unreasonable model, and ~14,000 objects in the tree (a GridItem and a Label per cell) seems pretty modest.

I've tried lots of different methods but my project send error message "Security error accessing url Unable to load WSDL. If currently online, please verify the URI and/or format of the WSDL [URL]"
put the file in different places

(my swf url : http://localhost/bin-debug/test.html checked http://localhost/bin-debug/crossdomain.xml its ok)
C:wampwwwcrossdomain.xml
I added the load line of the project
protected function application1_initializeHandler(event:FlexEvent):void

I am attempting to capture a very large image that was made dynamically within the Flash Player (the size of the image is 2400px by 12,000px) and am running into some very serious issues... Let me run down how the image get's to that size in the first place:
User adds elements to a canvas and then when the user is finished the canvas scales up to 2400px wide and ~12,000px tall. The problem arises when I attempt to save the image to the hard drive. Now, I dont know if this will affect the recommended fix, but the rendered image wont be saved on the hard drive, it will be sent to a server. I know about the ~4050px limit in Flash Player and was thinking I could get around that by clipping the images with the ImageSnapshot.captureBitmapData() method and keeping the required Rectangle variable below 4000px then repeat that down the large image until it reaches the end where the final images will be pieced together at a later time. However... As i mentioned the error comes when it reaches the 'fileReference.save(pngImage);' method..

I'm currently looking at structuring my teams projects into a consistent manner that properly utilises packages and is easily version-controlled (via SVN). I'm interested in any 'best practise' with regards to project structuring and how to use consistent packaging without lumping everything into a gigantic [URL] folder structure whilst maintaining that package structure. I'm also keen to use the src/bin/lib folder structure within each project.

I will not be hosting the .swf file and I would like to include images using Flash Builder 4. The images appear in a folder in the exported version and I'm not sure how to "embed" them into the .swf (so that I can deploy the file to sites like Kongregate, etc.)
Seems like it should be simple, but my Google fu is currently poor.
Edit: Note, I would like to continue using the Flex framework, which is what I am using now.

I've build a fairly large system in as3 and now I need to introduce some other programmers in the different parts, and hopfully they will eventually grasp the entire system. I need to describe relations between classes and maybe some kind of flow, but the relations are the most important.
I've checked UML but I find it a bit strict and would like to be able to write comments about specific classes or relations and maybe be able to draw curved lines/arrows etc. In UML I also find it hard to know which kind of lines/arrows to use when and where.
So I am looking for a method/software/tutorial on this topic, either on some extended/simplified UML or a completely different method.

I'm currently working on a little project of mine, where I have a character and a number of different items like clothing,hairstyles etc, which over time.. hopefully will grow into a tremendous amount.The thing is, if I have eveything in one fla file, there'll come a time where it becomes too bloated/large and Flash will eventually lag.So, is there anything way I can keep for example.. all the clothing in a separate fla/swf and the main character in another fla.But when I publish.. They all combine back together?I customise the character dynamically with references to linkage identifiers.. So I need a way which allows them to be split into different swfs, but still be able to call to the right clip.

I really want to start work on a game idea I have using PaperVision.The largest/most complex thing in Flash I have ever made is probably my last project which is an interactive school map for my A Level [URL] . Check it out, its a little laggy in the browser but it is designed to run in the flash projector from the desktop.I used around 10 .as files and dumped all my graphics in 1 .fla as sprites and stuff.This is ok (...ish) as I had a large 'main' file and a massive 'main3d' file which (324 lines which is big for me :S lol).
Im planning on making it a big, 3D adventure style game with lots of elements and AI things. But how do I organise my code? If I continue like this, I'm going to have a few mahasssive files and lots of small ones.How to the 'pros' organise their stuff? All the time I see source codes for small experiments which are great, but I have never seen any layout overviews of what files they used and what kinds of things they put in them. I also have no idea how complex environments, where objects need to update to add/remove elements without having to check the position of the player every frame.

My company is working on a casual game which is entirely made in Flash. To speed up development/compile time we split some of it up into SWC files, for example dialog controls, cutscenes, particle effects are all controlled via SWC files. This was working great up until a few days ago, we have been working on this project for about 8 months with no major problems. However, now all of a sudden, when we compile the game, none of the SWC files work. The game compiles and runs ok, but nothing from the SWC files are working.
The strange thing is that if we remove one of the SWC files from the folder (the game reads all the SWC files from one folder) then the game will work. Even if you remove a SWC which isnt immediately used by the game it will still work. It's almost as if there is some limit to how many SWC files you can have loaded. (There are only 10 SWC files in the folder we are loading from).

I understand that, in order get an anti-aliased font in a dynamic text field, the most given advice is to embed the font. But that doesn't work for my project since we want to make it available in multiple languages, and there are too many fields that must be embedded, and it greatly increases the file size of just one scene.
The other option I have seen people use is to custom anti-alias, but for some reason, this option just is not working for me. I fiddle and fiddle with the sliders, and no change is ever made. We are only using Arial, so I am at a complete loss as to why I seem to get no changes in the text from this option.
shed light on what might be blocking me from using custom anti-alias in my flash files?

Let me first say that the project I am working with was my first foray into AS3 as well as OOP. I wanted to be a grown up so I wanted to use classes and not rely on individual swfs.Unfortunately, I didnt quite understand the spirit of OOP, or at least I dont think I did, and I made each section of the site into a separate class. I then integrated the classes and their library materials into one large project. The thing works great - but unfortunately the file has gotten too big.What is the most straightforward way to now break this project back up? Do I need to load in external swfs

How can I add a set of dynamic images and then add event handlers to each that trigger a different event? My scenario is that I have a remote service that grabs a set of data (ArrayCollection) that has a className, classID and classDescription. I would like the images to have event handlers that trigger a new panel display that would show the "classDescription" for the particular class that is clicked. My problem is figuring out how to retrieve the proper set of data and adding the images properly to the panel.

I'm trying to load and display images (read in dynamicaly with xml) into a rectangular grid format, say, 2 rows of 3 images.
I believe I understand the nuts and bolts about xml loaders, but my code is only showing what I think is the last image:
[Code]....
the trace command reveals that the coordinates are indeed right on where I expect them to be... only thing is on the stage, only one image shows up. The very last one.

When getting the rotation of a movie clip I sometimes get a number like this: -1.4033418597069754e-14
And this number seems to break simple math. see my code below:
var thisRot:Number = rotation;
trace("thisRot: " + thisRot);
//outputs - thisRot: -1.4033418597069754e-14
[Code].....
How can -1.4033418597069754e-14 round down to 0? And Math.round(thisRotAbs) also results in 0. So how can this be? And how can 180 - -1.4033418597069754e-14 = 180?

I seem to run into compile issues in Flash Builder when I import 3rd-party libraries at the wrong level in the directory structure. For example, sometimes I'll import a library one level too deep into its directory tree, and the package explorer ends up excluding the prefix root-level package, usually "com." or "net.". Even though the content of the source itself doesn't change, this will cause compile errors.
Thus: Is it a 1) convention or 2) language requirement that a class's package structure (e.g., "foo.bar.Class") must match its path location (e.g., foo/bar/Class.as)?
If it's a language requirement, why is it a requirement? Wouldn't that overdetermine the package structure, since it is already specified in the source code and quite happily consuming the first three to eight columns of each line? If it's not a language requirement, are my compile errors just a result of Flash Builder enforcing the convention?
