ActionScript 3.0 :: Preloader (multiple Swf) Versus External Video On The First Frame?
Dec 16, 2009
I have a preloader and 10 swf that needs to be cache. My problem was that when the preloader started, it was not only caching the swf, but a lot of .flv and a lot of the same player skin (flvplayback component). I don't need and don't want to preload or cache those .flv. They need to be load only when someone is on the page not before (in real time, not preload).
But the problem is that the videos (flv) are on the first frame of every swf cause I need the video to start when they enter the page. So when the preloader start, it starts to preload the videos too (since they are on the first frame).Is there a solution to change the behavior of the preloader or restrict what he can load ?Is there a better way to make my video start on enter frame without putting it on the first frame ? Something that would not be preload and cache but that would start when the user enter the page ?

I was wondering if someone could help me. I've spent months looking for an AS2 preloader that does the following:
1. Preloads multiple external swf files into a single movie holder.
2. Starts automatically preloading once the parent file is launched.
3. Contains a progress bar with % downloaded.
4. Can be placed on a "Preload" scene.
Working on the file in Flash CS3, AS2. I've looked at tutorials, scanned the web, etc. And I still can't find the right one, or even how to make one.

I suppose the title says it all. I can load an external video file (FLV) and I can have it play. I also have the custom buttons made to control the clip. The only thing I have left to do is to have the main timeline move onto frame 2 once the external video reaches its end. I am using actionscript 3 and flash cs 5.5.

I am experimenting with AS3 and I created a page that loads around 35 images to the screen from XML and randomly scatters them on the stage. I know how to use the ProgressEvent to show the loading for each individual image, but I am trying to figure out a way to show it as a whole. The one think ive tried & acheived is to have total number of loaded images divided by total number of images. So when 15 of 30 images are loaded its 50 %, etc.... But Id like to have a more effcient preloader that shows the actually loading.

I'm creating a 360 turn by importing .png files into each movie clip. I wanted the preloader bar to increase in size as each one loads. Once the preloader is completed on frame one, I have it go and stop on frame 2, but there is a blank screen for a view seconds. I think the images were still loading after the preloader was completed.

I need to preload 2 external .swfs, one containing animation and one containing sound, and I need them to start playing at the same time. As of now I have a general preloader on the main timeline, but as you might expect, after the preloader finishes, there is a lag while the .swf's are being loaded. I thought everything was solved, until a friend of mine looked at it in dial-up, and the preloader just kept looping 10 times before the animation started, so now I'm starting over. Part of my complication I believe is that I'm using loadMovieNum into levels as opposed to loading the external .swf's in a separate container MC (that's what I've noticed most people recommend for this problem), but I tried doing that technique several times with no luck. Right now my main movie, index.fla, has a preloader MC in the first frame, with this AS attached to the clip:
Code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
loading = _parent.getBytesLoaded();
total = _parent.getBytesTotal();
percent -= (percent-((loading/total)*100))*.25;
per = int(percent);
[Code] .....
The clip contains a loadbar, static text (which just says 'Loading'), dynamic text (which tells the percentage), and a 'stop' in the actions layer. In the actions layer within my main movie, there is a 'stop' on the first frame as well. On the second frame, there is this AS:
Code:
var audioOn = false;
loadMovieNum("musicfile.swf", 1);
loadMovieNum("1movie.swf", 2);
stop();
In order that the animation and music starts at the same time, within my animation .swf (1movie.swf), I have this AS on the first frame of the actions layer:
Code:
if (_level0.audioOn == true) {
gotoAndPlay(2);
}
Within my musicfile.swf, there is this AS on the second frame of the mp3:
Code:
_level0.audioOn = true;
My main objective is to be able to use my preloader to preload both of these .swf's concurrently in my main movie so that they may start at the same time.

I have a .swf being loaded into a main.swf using the following:
var ld:Loader = new Loader()
ld.load(new URLRequest("nameofsecond.swf"))
addChildAt(ld, 0)
The above is in the second frame of my main.swf timeline. I'm looking for a way, using as3, to code a preloader in the first frame of the main.swf that counts the number of bytes loaded in the secondary .swf and goes to and plays the second frame of the main.swf when all the bytes have loaded.

I've been using the snazzy preloader for a while now, but now I've come to a fork in the road, and it's forking got me baffled. The most annoying thing is I'm sure it's just a basic targetting problem.
The preloader works fine if the external .swf is loaded in by LoadMovieNum, but I tried placing it in on a lower layer in my main movie, hence the LoadMovie (into an empty MC container).

I've tried to approach this from several angles, employing several of the tutorials, attachments found in various threads, etc, and nothing has worked. So, please bear me as I ask yet another question regarding this subject.I need to preload 2 external .swfs, one containing animation and one containing sound, and I need them to start playing at the same time. As of now I have a general preloader on the main timeline, but as you might expect, after the preloader finishes, there is a lag while the .swf's are being loaded.thought everything was solved, until a friend of mine looked at it in dial-up, and the preloader just kept looping 10 times before the animation started, so now I'm starting over. I just watched the AS3 preloader tutorial here, and downloaded the FLA to copy the AS into my project. Here is the AS...
Code: Select allvar l:Loader = new Loader();
l.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, loop);
l.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, done);
l.load(new URLRequest("splash.swf"));
[Code].....
The preloader works to load the 'splash.swf', but that SWF is a 36 frame long movie, and when it loads from the preloader, it's already at Frame 36, so you never see what was before that frame. How can I get it to load at it's Frame 1?

I have an AS3 .fla that loads an external XML file of image names, and then iteratively loads the images into the .fla. All this works great. What I want is to create a preloader that is aware of the size of all these external images. As far as I can tell there's no way to do this, but I'm hoping someone here is smarter than I am.
I tried Lee Brimelow's method of having a separate SWF whose only job is to load another SWF in its place. This doesn't work because the preloader's call to .bytesTotal only reads the bytes of the main SWF, not of the external XML or JPGs that are dynamically loaded into it. So the result is the preloader reaches 100% when the main SWF is loaded, but that happens really quickly and the bulk of the load time comes after the 100% mark, when the main SWF starts loading in images.
The more I think about this, the more it seems that you can never access the .bytesTotal property until you've already instantiated the loader and called the .load() method. Am I wrong? Is there a way to fetch just the SIZE of an external file without actually initiating the act of loading the file into memory?

I need to load an external movie that includes some video. That external movie is like 95mb. How can I preload everything so that there is no lag when I get to the scene where I load the external swf? This movie, of course, is not getting put on the internet. I am using Flash as sort of a high end Powerpoint app. Not sure if this is just a basic preloader or not.

A Video-loop at 25fps imported to flash, embedded, plays fine if the project fps also is 25fps.But i also want to add a 3D Carousel menu, but at the projects 25 fps it goes a little bit choppy when rotating quick.So I try to change the projects fps to 50, and voila, the menu looks good but the video plays to fast.The video should alternate between clips randomly, and the clips has to be preloaded, thus its embedded in the swf (...or could this be done with flvs?)5-10 clips.

So I have streaming video coming in, and I want to know when it is buffering. This is fundamentally not that hard, just adding an EventListener for some type of buffering event, but I was wondering if this is necessarily the "best" way to do it.
My other thought was setting up a timer that polls the video feed every X milliseconds asking it if the video isBuffering(), or somesuch. While I could, in the worst case, wait the full X milliseconds before querying the video stream, I've decided that this doesn't actually matter to me; I can work around it, and indeed do so quite naturally already.
So I'm asking: is there substantial overhead involved in having an EventListener (assuming I already have quite a few), or is the advantage of catching the buffering event right away sufficiently appealing?

I have made a .swf that references an external .f4v . The swf plays fine on my own computer, but does not play on a colleagues computer, or another computer which we tested. The file is not for upload to web , it is for local playback. I assume this is a file path issue, but I have tried many different things including specifying a path and then recreating the same directory structure on the other computer. What am I missing? The f4v file can playback on the colleagues computer (I did install ffdshow , although another tested mp4 also plays back fine) but not the .swf. !

Does anyone know if Flash Media Server can be configured to reduce the image quality of a publish stream if available bandwidth goes down or there are delays in the connection?
When I (locally) play back videos recorded on poorer/intermittent connections, video frames are dropped, so the image freezes up.

I'm using a OOP model I read about called 'model-view-controller' - so I've got three main classes at work and then a few more additional classes I felt were necessary. I'm building a kind of game.I'm at the stage now where most of the programming is done. The game essentially works. Now all I gotta do is add the visual stuff - the animation and graphics. I asked myself if to draw up all the graphics as separate external swf files which would be loaded into the game via my View class; or would a better method be just doing all the graphics and animation directly inside the fla file, storing all MovieClips and Buttons, etc. as symbols in the library (exported for ActionScript 3.0).
I'm curious to know if this is an issue of mere personal preference, or if there are pros and cons for each method of work - external swf files loading into Flash vs. storing the graphics as symbols in the fla. file library.

at first, I thought I could manage this myself searching the forums about "preloader" but none of the solutions seem to work. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm using the FLVPlayer with an external file. What am I looking for?
1. Well, the preload code for frame 1 that makes sure the external F4V (movie.f4v in the same dir) is loaded 100% before it jumps to frame 2 where the movie should start playing...
2. If possible, a progress bar.

I have imported a flv to as "import video" and placed it on the stage. I have added other layers each on frame one. I want to drop stills out as others enter but I cannot run the video on the timeline to determine at what frame I want something to change. I could of course time it out at 15 fps but is there not a friendlier way to pick a point where one object exits and another enters? The video is a flvplayback instance. I have not made it a movieclip or named it.

i've recently installed Wowza media server 2 locally, currently only for testing purposes.everything works fine, except of accurate seeking functionality - or in other words advancing frame-by-frame .when i use VLC to play my video file i have no problems advancing frame-by-frame. however, when i use the 'seek()' function to move the playhead a fraction of a second, its seems to move only to the next key frame (meaning that only once every few mouse clicks the playhead advances dramatically).

I have a problem when making flash applications with more than one frame that has symbols placed on it in that I can't declare all of the event listeners for the objects at the same time and I have found that even if I put them all on the first frame, add the event listeners, then click through to the next frame then the buttons won't work on that frame.
Does anyone have any idea how I could solve this? I did consider myself a fairly competent AS3 programmer until I realised I had no idea how to handle this sort of thing. Solved: I initialised the clips from my external class and then addChild'd and removeChild'd them as I needed to and placed their x and y on addChilding.
