ActionScript 3.0 :: Create A New Tween In The Global Scope In Order To Use?
Feb 3, 2009
When I create a new tween in the global scope in order to use it many times in my functions, I have to stop to avoid its execution. Is it normal ? Or maybe I should put it into a function and call the tween function everytime I need to use it... mhm. Maybe I answered by myself

My question deals directly with ActionScript 3, although it could possibly appear in other languages. Consider the global trace function found in AS3. Calling the method requires no imports and is globally available from all classes.
class A {
public function A() {
trace("Hello, A!"); // Hello, A!
}}
Now, what if I create my own class method of the same name? In AS3, if I have a class method trace and then make a call to trace elsewhere in my class, the call is made to the class method over the global function. Essentially, I've blocked my ability to call the global trace method.
class B {
public function B() {
trace("Hello, B!"); // no output
} public function trace(s:String):void {
// do something else.
}}
Now, I know the obvious answer is to say, "don't create a class method called trace." But what if I'm unaware of the existence of the global trace function? Or what if I have a desire to "override" or "block" the global function? Is doing so bad programming? Or is this just another example of how AS3 is a poor object oriented language?

public function addNewMc():void{
var newMC:MovieClip= new MovieClip();
this.addChild(newMC);
}
public function removeOldMc(newMC):void{
this.removeChild(newMC);
}
How can I create a new MovieClip within a method, which can be used throughout the class, without defining it at the top of the class? And for extra points, without using return. I can get it to work, if the first function addNewMc returns the value newMC, and passing that to any other methods.

I'm trying to make a sniper game, but I'm having trouble creating the scope view (you can only see a part of the screen i.e. the scope, the rest is black). Now, I'm pretty sure bitmapdata is somehow involved, but I've never really worked with the class and therefore am not sure how to do it.

I am attempting to create a Flash5 menu tree, following the Flash4 tutorial at this [URL] I have created the two MC's (a "topMenu" and a "subMenu"). However, when I place the two MC's on the first frame of _root , the properties of the associated buttons get screwed up if I place the two MCs in a verical alignment. It appears that Flash5 makes a consolidated object, such that the _height property for the second MC is determined by adding the _height property of both MCs.
1. Could you confirm that this is what's taking place?
2. Is there a way to use Scope to eliminate the problem?
3. Other recommendations?
NOTE: if you move the lower MC out to the side, the problem disappears. Although a workaround, this seems to be a poor way for the program to function.

I'm making a flash application in which I need to disable the Tab key for flashs tab order and instead make my own tab order.
There are too many textFields that need to be in the order, and there can be too many changes to name everything with tabIndex 1, 2, 3 etc.
What I want to do is (probably) to use the Selection.setFocus every time the tab key is pressed and change the focus to the next Textfield that I have in my array for the current page.
I cant find out how to "disable" flashs own tabing when the Tab key is pressed.

I have a Flash AS2 application that is made up of many SWF files. I need to create an OnClick event in a container SWF that will work for every SWF called. I am trying to avoid adding code to every SWF (over 100).
Currently I can get access to the click in the container for the first SWF but when the second SWF is called it seems to overwrite the container.
this._lockroot = true;
this.onMouseUp = function(){
//if not on login
[Code]....
How do I make where a click in the container will be triggered even if the SWF inside the container calls another SWF?

I know global variables are supposed to be bad but is it possible to create global classes? I am creating an application and I want to have one class that handles sound. From any class I would like to be able to say soundhandler.playSound(); without having to pass references all over the place. It should just know it is there.

I have a primary function that calls upon other functions, which call upon other functions, etc, each one creating different objects. I need to delete everything eventually and was thinking the easiest way to do this would be to have a global array to push() each object into. It would be easy to just put garbageArray.push(thisCreatedObject); into the for() loops of every function to grab all the objects so a deleteFunction() could just cycle through garbageArray to remove and null everything cleanly.
What I want to do:I could easily just create a global array to do this (code example 1), but I would prefer to be able to recreate this global array and delete it every time this primary function is called (code example 3) since it will be called upon a lot. It would be cleaner code to have it created from within the function as opposed to outside of it because I will have a lot of primary functions doing similar things that would require a global array like this.
I also know I could create one and simply pass it as an argument to every function (code example 2), but I would have to pass it to every single function. There are a lot of functions and a lot of calls to them, so this would require rewriting a lot of code and would be more work than it's worth. Making a global array outside of the function would be easier than doing this if it came down to it.
ActionScript Code:
//example 1 of global array. No passing as argument from
//primary to secondary functions. Multiple global arrays
//required for multiple primary functions in the future.

I'm trying to create a global variable that initially stores a 0. Then via a function will change the value of that global variable, and allow the other functions to access the new number. I have it working where it adds 1 to the variable, and stores the number 1 however, I cannot get the number to add up beyond 1.
I have this in my first layer,frame.
_global.thisSound = 0;
function PlaySound(){
temp = _global.thisSound;
_global.thisSound = eval(temp) + 1;
}
Please note this is the basics of this function, there are other parts to the function for playing sounds, but this is the only part that I'm having the problem

I'm a web designer. In a effort to make Flash-based sites for my clients I have gone over stacks of AS books now for months. I just don't get any of it--and I've tried. Moreover, the books all give abstract examples to do just about anything with AE. My needs are very limited: I need to use AS for web navigation in order to create Flash-based websites. Here's an example of what I'd like my websites to do: [URL]
Can anybody point me to Flash templates, demos, tutorials, AS libraries, websites, videos, classes, that focus on Flash navigation, with specific examples of real life websites? Or blocks of code where all I have to do is replace some lines with my own stuff? Or an AS library comparable to jQuery? I know this has to be doable. I don't know any JavaScript either, but I'm perfectly able to fulfill all my web design needs with jQuery.

I am creating an order form for my flash site. I have never done this before in flash but I have in visual basic. I have a few questions:
1. Is assigning variable names to checkboxes and radio buttons the same as in visual basic? I mean i know that you probably assign them in the properties. ex..say i name a radio button 'radio1', to run a check in my actionscript whether radio1 was checked or not would it be something like if(radio1){}
2. After the person fills out the form I would like to have the results of the order sent to a pre-specified email adress in a certain format. What would be a good way to do this?

I have a number of cases where I have a tween happening in ActionScript, but I would like it to happen after a delay from the event that triggers it. At the moment I'm creating this delay by having a tween that does nothing (eg. an "_x" tween for which the start and end points are the same) and then using tween1.onMotionFinished = function(){to create the one I really want. Is there a way to create this delay more neatly?
