Actionscript 3 :: Create Global Classes - Handle Sound?

Jan 20, 2012

I know global variables are supposed to be bad but is it possible to create global classes? I am creating an application and I want to have one class that handles sound. From any class I would like to be able to say soundhandler.playSound(); without having to pass references all over the place. It should just know it is there.

I have everything pretty much planned out now in a "game script" of everything that i want to happen. only thing is, i'm not sure where to start.Actually,i implemented rotating the planet and the timer so far, but that is all.I was wondering if anyone wouldn't mind reading through my game script and pointing me in the right direction.I am trying to wrap my head around creating classes to handle different aspects of the game, but not sure what to put in a class and what not to.I attached the game so far and the word file

AS2 :: Handle Missing Sound Card

Feb 25, 2010

In my AS2 Flash game, I play a number of sound files and wait for the "onSoundComplete" message/function before proceeding.The problem is if there is no sound card in the system (or it is disabled in device manager) - everything acts like it is working (no errors, onLoad handler gets "true") - but the sound never actually gets played, and as such, my event never gets triggered.I had planned on dealing with this by hooking into my sound code, and if I detect no sound card, just kick off a timer to wait a few seconds before manually firing the "onSoundComplete" function.The only problem is that I can't reliably find a way to determine if there is a sound card in the system! AS3 seems to handle this quite nicely by passing back a NULL soundchannel - unfortunately I am stuck in AS2.0

ActionScript 3.0 :: Get A Handle On Embedded Sound Files?

May 7, 2009

From the Sound Class information, it says to use the SoundMixer Class to handle embedded Sound Files.  I have two sound files embedded, that I have setup in 2 separate layers, starting at frame one in the main timeline.  I needed to do this so I could see the wave files, and coordinate text with the waves.  I do not want to load these files into the .swf file at runtime using URLRequest.  How do I get a handle on those as they exist, to make each controllable by separate volume and mute controls for each sound?

This will be a challenging question, because, "it can't be done" doesn't work for me.  I managed to create a way to use an external classfile to control the main timeline, the ROOT timeline, without having to create a sub movie to root.  I can use my component to call play(); as though it were in code in a frame.  But it isn't, it's in an external classfile.  I passed root to the classfile and told the classfile to think of it as a movieclip - that put the handle on it.  I tried similar way with root as a Sound, but that isn't detailed enough - I need to get a handle on the frame that contains the embedded sound file.  I embedded, attached it, using the properties view for the frame.

I've attached, or whatever you want to call it, these sound files to a frame, and this frame is or should be attached to the layer I've created.  So, under the assumption that the ROOT has everything attached to it in some manner (it is after all the foundation for the COM), the stage of the root contains the visual components, so ROOT has to have the layer objects attached to it, which should have the frame objects attached to the layers.  I have two layers that each have a .wav file attached to frame one.  Somehow Flash keeps track of that - I want to know how Flash does it so I can read what flash reads.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Muting Individual Streaming Sounds Vs Global Sound

Oct 22, 2010

how to create a mute button successfully but only with the global sound setting (so all sounds mute or play). What i need to understand is how to use the Sound class to control individual streaming sounds.

I have 3 sounds and 3 buttons. The 3 sounds correspond to clapping, vocalizing, and the instrument playing, all of the same rhythm. I want the user to have the ability to hear all 3 at once and toggle on and off (muting, not actually stopping) each sound via the respective buttons.

I cannot call the sounds dynamically, because I need them embedded (streaming) to sync graphics with them (the names of the beats change color with each drum beat) and need to see the sounds graph in the timeline. What I want is for all 3 sounds to start simultaneously, all syncing with the same graphics on the stage, and for the buttons to toggle mute/unmute for each individual sound, so that the user can hear them all, only 2, or just 1 at any point, without ever stopping the looping sounds.

This is the code I have that is working for muting all the sounds, but I have no idea how to target the individual sounds instead. The following is only for one button, but there will be 3 buttons, one for each sound:

Actionscript Code:
function setMute(vol){var sTransform:SoundTransform = new SoundTransform(1,0);sTransform.volume = vol; SoundMixer.soundTransform = sTransform;}var Mute:Boolean =

[Code]...

I realize the SoundTransform is what applies it globally. How do I reference each sound individually?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash Symbols - Cannot Get Global Sound Volume From Controller

May 12, 2010

I inherited a flash application at work that is basically a bunch of symbols with actionscript inside each of them. There is also an external actionscript file that serves as the application controller, with much of the application logic in various frames of Scene 1. Some of the symbols are supposed to play a sound file on mouse over, which they do just fine, but when I try to get the global sound volume from the controller:

E.g.
ActionScript Code:
var bVolume:Number = controller.getGlobalVolume();

It doesn't work because it doesn't recognize the controller object. This is strange because the controller is called all throughout the project, but it is not seen within symbols.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Create Event Class That Can Handle The Target Property?

Jan 30, 2009

I'm not sure if it's possible, but can you override a variable of a parent class like you can override a function? I'm trying to create my own event class that can handle the target property. I have a custom imageLoader class, but when it dispatches it's loading complete event:

ActionScript Code: dispatch(new Event("load_complete")); and a listener picks it up, e.target = null where I would like e.target to equal the imageLoader instance that has finished loading.

Does anyone have an answer or a better way to accomplish what I am aiming for?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Create A Global Variable From Inside Function?

Oct 11, 2011

I have a primary function that calls upon other functions, which call upon other functions, etc, each one creating different objects. I need to delete everything eventually and was thinking the easiest way to do this would be to have a global array to push() each object into. It would be easy to just put garbageArray.push(thisCreatedObject); into the for() loops of every function to grab all the objects so a deleteFunction() could just cycle through garbageArray to remove and null everything cleanly.

What I want to do:I could easily just create a global array to do this (code example 1), but I would prefer to be able to recreate this global array and delete it every time this primary function is called (code example 3) since it will be called upon a lot. It would be cleaner code to have it created from within the function as opposed to outside of it because I will have a lot of primary functions doing similar things that would require a global array like this.

I also know I could create one and simply pass it as an argument to every function (code example 2), but I would have to pass it to every single function. There are a lot of functions and a lot of calls to them, so this would require rewriting a lot of code and would be more work than it's worth. Making a global array outside of the function would be easier than doing this if it came down to it.

ActionScript Code:
//example 1 of global array. No passing as argument from
//primary to secondary functions. Multiple global arrays
//required for multiple primary functions in the future.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Create A Global Variable That Initially Stores A 0?

Oct 21, 2004

I'm trying to create a global variable that initially stores a 0. Then via a function will change the value of that global variable, and allow the other functions to access the new number. I have it working where it adds 1 to the variable, and stores the number 1 however, I cannot get the number to add up beyond 1.

I have this in my first layer,frame.

_global.thisSound = 0;
function PlaySound(){
temp = _global.thisSound;
_global.thisSound = eval(temp) + 1;
}

Please note this is the basics of this function, there are other parts to the function for playing sounds, but this is the only part that I'm having the problem

ActionScript 3.0 :: Handling Sound Effects In Several Classes?

May 13, 2009

I'm working on a pause feature for my game and the only issue giving me trouble is how to pause/restart the sound effects and music that is being played in various classes.

I do understand how to record the position when stopping and then play from the new position. All code examples are based on a single sound being played at a time.

I have multiple channels to handle music and for various sound effect categories (so the volume may be controlled separately).

Currently, all of the channels are all in a single class but the sound effects they are assigned (.play commands) are executed within each class (Bullet, Enemy, Tank, etc...)

I'm sure other developers have experience with sound effects in various classes as well... so how did you handle pausing multiple channels and then restarting all of the same sounds that were playing previously?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Automatically Generated (Sound) Classes

Mar 3, 2012

I'm trying to compile a SWC file with a lot of assets in it in an as easy possible way. "Easy" for a not so technical end user, not perse the way to acchieve that goal. Goal is to streamline a process to generate SWC files with as little possible tech for the person doing it.So, sort of like manually doing:

* Import files into Flash

* For each library item select "Export for actionscript" and have Flash generate the basic class.

* Publish as SWC

but without the Flash IDE and the possibly labourous process.Right now I'm trying to put an AIR project together that generates classes based on a file list. The classes can than be added to a Flash Builder library project to generate a SWC file from it (copy in finder, check classes in Project properties, done)I can generate the classes for graphics like below. Such a class can then be instantiated from within the host application [code] Allthough this adds another level to the display list (which looks kinda sloppy to me), it works.However, for this to work for sound files I need to create a class implementing all possible methods and properties of the soundclass and handle the events and such. There is no way to extend Sound and then do something like you would/can with graphics.[code]Does anyone know if there is a way to get to the format the Flash IDE generates the classes with?

Flash :: Are There Any Sound Classes Similar To The S:ContentCache

Is there a ContentCache[1] for sound assets? Once I load in a sound I want to keep a reference to it so it doesn't have to load again. Possibly a class reference to it or to the byte array (I'm rusty here).

The reason for this is to keep it in memory so the Flash Player doesn't have to reload it so the start time (latency) is low. These are short audio clips.
