ActionScript 3.0 :: Create A Reference To Variable/function Using Strings?
Sep 18, 2009
I'm wondering how I can create a reference to a function/variable by using strings. Sorry if I'm not explaining the problem well, but let me show you what I mean in an example:You can create a reference to a class using strings by using the getDefinitionByName as follows:var classRef:Class = getDefinitionByName("myClass") as Class;var myClass1:classRef = new classRef();Similarly, how do you refer to functions and variables? The reason why I want to know is because I'm trying to implement a function which takes in the event handler name as the parameter, and what the function essentially does is that it adds an event listener with the associated handler (based on the parameter) to an object, something like this:
public function addListener(handler:String):void {
mc.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, "on" + handler);
}

Is there a way to reference a function via a variable? In other words, instead of saying something like:
var theVar = someString + 'function';
if (theVar == 'functionName') functionName ();
to access it directly:
(someString + 'function') ();
using some kind of bracket notation?

I wonder what the most common reasons for memory leaks in AS3 are.First thing what I am not sure about is: is it better to have a variable reference inside a function or outside it. Will the variable be null-d automaticly inside a function or when do I have to null it and when not?I have massive problems with my game with memory leaks. I noticed I reference some of the clips of the timeline even inside my debugging clip to display propertys and this was causing collecting huge amount of memory.But even before I go into the game with bigger objects the System.memory is slowly growing and growing.I just have a socket connection and some interval loops and enter_frame events.

So i have an external text file organized like this:
/* $file: data.txt */
&title0=Sacrum
&detail0=Detail text for Sacrum
&title1=L5
[Code].....
There are 28 of these 'title' and 'detail' pairs. The 'title' text is to fill a dynamic text box and the 'detail' to fill another dynamic text box depending on which section the user is mousing over.
My issue is getting the text from the file stored into arrays. For my test loop I keep getting undefined as the stored value, and i know it has something to do with converting a string value to object..
var lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
lv.onLoad = handleDataLoad;
lv.load('data.txt');
function handleDataLoad (success:Boolean) {

Is it possible to create variables with a function? I don't mean create my own variable in a function but actually have the function create a unique variable name (eg. exam1, exam2 and so on) they would all have the same data type.

This is hard to describe in a sentence, so i'll write some false code: (with incorrect syntax, of course)[code]...
Is it possible to do something like this, where I pass the name of the data Type that I want it to create and it does it within the function? And I know that with this simple example it isn't necessary to do it this way, but in the full program this would save some time and make the code more efficient.

I have a primary function that calls upon other functions, which call upon other functions, etc, each one creating different objects. I need to delete everything eventually and was thinking the easiest way to do this would be to have a global array to push() each object into. It would be easy to just put garbageArray.push(thisCreatedObject); into the for() loops of every function to grab all the objects so a deleteFunction() could just cycle through garbageArray to remove and null everything cleanly.
What I want to do:I could easily just create a global array to do this (code example 1), but I would prefer to be able to recreate this global array and delete it every time this primary function is called (code example 3) since it will be called upon a lot. It would be cleaner code to have it created from within the function as opposed to outside of it because I will have a lot of primary functions doing similar things that would require a global array like this.
I also know I could create one and simply pass it as an argument to every function (code example 2), but I would have to pass it to every single function. There are a lot of functions and a lot of calls to them, so this would require rewriting a lot of code and would be more work than it's worth. Making a global array outside of the function would be easier than doing this if it came down to it.
ActionScript Code:
//example 1 of global array. No passing as argument from
//primary to secondary functions. Multiple global arrays
//required for multiple primary functions in the future.

I have the following:
function ShowSlide(event:TweenEvent) {
m= getChildByName("tag"+slideIndex+"_mc");
m.visible = false;
if (slideIndex < 4) {
slideIndex++;
[Code] ....
And I want to do for "tagInitW" the same thing I do for "m" being given that I already have "created tag1InitW", "tag1InitH", "tag2InitW", "tag2InitH..." So is there anyway I can dynamically target a variable? This was easy in AS2, but because of the strict dataType the vars have in AS3, I can't do it like I was doing it in AS2.

i have long string values how do i set it up ... like this
var longString:String = "Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. How can I write "_x",100,1,"easeout",0,callback as a string?? I have tried to put "these" around the text. The problem seems to be that "_x" and "easeout" which are effectively strings inside the string! -- but for the tween engine to work - I need to declare that.

how to create price strings from numbers.E.g. a product could have a price of 25.50. however this will show as 25.5, as it removes the 0.I would like to convert this number (25.5) to a string, and format it as a price, e.g. "25.50"In C#, its easy, you just do .toString("0.00");but i can't find any way of doing it in Actionscript. Is there an easy way or do i have to do some string splitting and such?

I am working with a function that converts csv data to a multi-dimentional array. I am then going through the characters to find specific situations in the way the strings are handled in the array. One example is if I have a string like - "this is a string, yeah" - then I make sure not to count the comma in the string because it is between quotes from that string. Anyhow In the following function I have some how lost my spaces in the results.Instead of getting "this is AS3" I am getting "thisisAS3". Spaces seem to only be available in the strings that have quotes.
function CSVtoArray(csv:String):Array {
var inQuotes:Boolean = false;
var field:String = "";

I'm using String.split to parse a command line string into an array of strings. The result is then used to call a function using the Function.apply API.If apply(null, ["17"]) is called with this function:[code]does not work (expected output: false Boolean; actual output: true Boolean).Is there a way to make it recognize "true" and "false" (or anything else) as Boolean values, just like it does with numerical strings? Ideally "true" and "false" should also remain valid string values.

I'm using String.split to parse a command line string into an array of strings. The result is then used to call a function using the Function.apply API.
If apply(null, ["17"]) is called with this function:
static function test(foo:int):void
{
trace(foo, typeof(foo));
}
it works as expected (output: 17 number).
However, calling apply(null, ["false"]) or apply(null, ["0"]) with this function:
static function test(foo:Boolean):void
{
trace(foo, typeof(foo));
}
does not work (expected output: false Boolean; actual output: true Boolean). Is there a way to make it recognize "true" and "false" (or anything else) as Boolean values, just like it does with numerical strings? "true" and "false" should also remain valid string values.

I work on AS3 one week, and then take a break for a few weeks, then work on it a day, take a break, etc.. So I forget some of the basics, and need refreshers. I think I need to stop taking breaks.
Problem: I push multiple strings into an array, and some of the strings are the same.
Code:
var myArray = new Array();
myArray.push (Snivvle);
myArray.push (Kirupa);
myArray.push (Snivvle);
I want to find out which element positions "Snivvle" hogs up. We can see that it would be using element 0 and 2, and if we do an "indexOf" we would only get to see element 0, and doing a "lastIndexOf" we would only see element 2. How do I find out ALL of the element positions "Snivvle" is located in, so that it returns: element 0, element 2.
