ActionScript 3.0 :: Refer To Variable Using Strings And Others?
Jun 10, 2009
How do I refer to a variable using strings and other variables? What I mean is, for example, you can refer to an instance of a MovieClip on the root level with instance name "mc1" by doing this[code]...

asically I have a variable in which I store various numbers depending on other aspects of the flash movie and I have a bunch of movieclips that are on the stage all named by number. I want to use the variable value to access and run methods etc of these movieclips.
e.g.
var myVar = "10";
myVar.myFunction();
where the item on stage called '10' will react. I realise this is a confusion between a string and an object/movieclip reference but i'm almost certain ive done this before and ive got a feeling it had something to do with [] brackets on the end of something...

Trying to set up a world of warcraft like hotkey setup for an RPG i'm making for a school project, where you drag spells from the spellbook onto the hotkeys. Understand all the concepts, however, instead of doing a ridiculous amount of if statements, I want to loop the functions. Unfortunately, I don't know how to refer to certain variable and instance names within loops. I shall show you what I have:
ActionScript Code:
for(var i; i<2; i++){
spellbook_inst["spell_"+i+"_inst"].onPress = function(){
this.startDrag();
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._x = this._x;
_root.hold_spell_position_inst._y = this._y;
}}
The "spells" (i.e., icons you drag from the spellbook) are all named spell_(number)_inst, and are movieclips within the spellbook_inst movieclip. I want the drag function to be available for all spells. At the moment, I don't get any syntax errors, but nothing happens, so I presume I have referred to it incorrectly.

Is it possible to refer to a variable in a class file separate from the one you are working in? Say Class1.as had a variable named "exampleVar", and in Class2.as you wanted to put something like "exampleVar++;". Is this possible and if so how would it be achieved?

I am trying to make a game to learn actionscript. my game is going to have multiple keyframes, ie one for dungeon, 1 for a large map yadda yadda yadda. Things like the character i would like to be available to all keyframes. i am assuming i put the character variable and info in the first keyframe and refer to these via _root in any frame. However if i want to make a dungeon and use the dungeon scene variables i would use this.
right now since i am only on the making a dungeon part i can refer to anything using this or _root. Case: my dungeon scene consists of walls and paths. right now i can do something like if(_root["path" + yPos + xPos]) _root["path" + yPos + xPos].removeMovieClip;
i can also call the same code using this instead of _root and it works. when i add a main new main frame and move the dungeon scene from frame 1 to frame 10, will i still be able to inter use _root and this and have the same effect, or once i move the dungeon scene from frame 1 to frame 10 i will no longer be able to use _root. also i only have 1 layer.

I have the following:
function ShowSlide(event:TweenEvent) {
m= getChildByName("tag"+slideIndex+"_mc");
m.visible = false;
if (slideIndex < 4) {
slideIndex++;
[Code] ....
And I want to do for "tagInitW" the same thing I do for "m" being given that I already have "created tag1InitW", "tag1InitH", "tag2InitW", "tag2InitH..." So is there anyway I can dynamically target a variable? This was easy in AS2, but because of the strict dataType the vars have in AS3, I can't do it like I was doing it in AS2.

i have long string values how do i set it up ... like this
var longString:String = "Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and
typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Im using a tween engine, and its syntax for use is as follows::
[Code].....
How can I write "_x",100,1,"easeout",0,callback as a string?? I have tried to put "these" around the text. The problem seems to be that "_x" and "easeout" which are effectively strings inside the string! -- but for the tween engine to work - I need to declare that.

I'm wondering how I can create a reference to a function/variable by using strings. Sorry if I'm not explaining the problem well, but let me show you what I mean in an example:You can create a reference to a class using strings by using the getDefinitionByName as follows:var classRef:Class = getDefinitionByName("myClass") as Class;var myClass1:classRef = new classRef();Similarly, how do you refer to functions and variables? The reason why I want to know is because I'm trying to implement a function which takes in the event handler name as the parameter, and what the function essentially does is that it adds an event listener with the associated handler (based on the parameter) to an object, something like this:
public function addListener(handler:String):void {
mc.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, "on" + handler);
}
[code].....

I'm wondering if theres a way I can turn a variable of strings (separated by commas) into an array?I'm using the loadVars object to import variables from a text file that I'd like to import to flash as an array.For example if the variable I import from the text file looks like this:&myVar=charlie,dog,cat,test&I'd like to get it into an array in Flash like thismyArray = new Array["charlie","dog","cat","test"];

I work on AS3 one week, and then take a break for a few weeks, then work on it a day, take a break, etc.. So I forget some of the basics, and need refreshers. I think I need to stop taking breaks.
Problem: I push multiple strings into an array, and some of the strings are the same.
Code:
var myArray = new Array();
myArray.push (Snivvle);
myArray.push (Kirupa);
myArray.push (Snivvle);
I want to find out which element positions "Snivvle" hogs up. We can see that it would be using element 0 and 2, and if we do an "indexOf" we would only get to see element 0, and doing a "lastIndexOf" we would only see element 2. How do I find out ALL of the element positions "Snivvle" is located in, so that it returns: element 0, element 2.

When an instance variable is constructed by a constructor method, why do you need to refer to the current instance variable being created when its the only one being created? I understand assigning an expression to it but why name it "this." when it is the only object that the constructor is building? Does it have some hing to do with being able to naming that object in the Local Variable? In other words am I creating a generic object that will be named in another class?

I have balls (...sounded pervert) that are created by duplicateMovieClip, yes, they spawn, but right on top of each other, and I don't seem to be able to do anything to them, I tried ball+i.onEnterFrame = function(){} typed in several different ways ("ball"+i, ["ball"+i] etcetc...) And I just couldn't find How to refer to them. i'm trying to spawn them to random positions and make them move in random directions (got the moving part already coded but like I said I can't name them -> can't use it atm.)
Short version: How to refer to balls that are created by duplicateMovieClip?

I have a container movie which loads another movie into a Loader object which then gets added to the main timeline. The loaded movie has a main class which controls all the other classes in that movie. The container movie has one other element - a scrollbar which scrolls the loaded movie (which is longer than the container) up and down.
When content changes in the loaded movie I need to pass a message to the scrollbar. If I trace parent.parent.parent from the init() function of the loaded movie it traces [object MainTimeline]. My scrollbar, sBar is a direct child of the main timeline, but tracing parent.parent.parent.sBar doesn't work So how can I pass a reference to the scrollbar to the loaded movie? Here's the code in the container movie:
PHP Code:
var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
var sBar:Scrollbar;
ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, initHandler);
[code]....

mc_zoom.loadMovie("detail.swf");
I then have a loader as a movieclip with the detail.swf
when the movie (detail.swf) is loaded the preloader I am trying to make/set the play to go:
_root.gotoAndStop(2);
But this does not work - it works locally but when used with the main file (main.swf)

I have an object created visually. How should I refer to it from classes of other objects? MovieClip(this.root).someObj or stage.someObj or MovieClip(this.root).stage.someObj? And moreover, if I want to see which frame is current on the main timeline, why I cannot just check stage.currentFrame? Why there is no such property of the stage, currentFrame? It has timeline, right?

the second bit of code "mc_inst1.onRollOver..." works, but the first bit of code, which tries to loop through all movie clip instances, will not work.I think this is because myReference is a String. But can anyone suggest how else I should construct my reference to the instance name?
Code:
for (var a:Number = 1; a<myCount; a++) {

var myClip:MovieClip = myReference;
