ActionScript 3.0 :: Organise A Game With Multiple Class Files?

Mar 6, 2010

I'm making the game Breakout as an AS3 application using OOP. I am getting very confused though. I know that objects should be only responsible for themselves. But this is where I get stuck, they need to communicate as some level to add and remove screens, and I am getting majorly confused as to what is going too far, when it could maybe achieved in a simpler more OOP way.

I've worked out the hierarchy of my classes, in terms of where they are being added (I think). Here it is roughly drawn out below. Have I got the order right based on OOP principles? Like, Introscreen will listen for play being pressed then call a method of the document class that will remove introscreen and then attach gamescreen. Is that right?

Another thing that puzzples me. It seems to me if I made a level and put the paddle and the ball in that, then arranged all the bricks in that level, that I'd be duplicating work (based on the fact I need paddle and ball for level 2 also). So it would be best if I could have gamescreen with paddle and the ball and then add level1/2/3 to display list which would therefore set up the appropriate brick placement. But then, wouldn't that mean that I couldn't do hittests because my level 1/2 or 3 wouldn't be a sibling to the bat and the ball, them residing as a sibling in the level's parent class?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Starting To Fill Up Game Folder With .as Class Files?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm working on my RPG combat engine, and everything is coming along nicely, except I'm starting to fill up my game folder with .as class files, and I was thinking it's probably smart to rearrange it so I have a folder for characters/enemies, and one for levels etc etc.I'm kinda learning as I go here so thats why I didnt start out with a planned folder structure.nyway, I can't seem to understand the correct way to go about doing it.Example: I have three classes which extend a "Character" class. They are added to the stage by the "Arena" class, when the Arena object is added to the stage by the "Game_Master" class. All of my classes at this point start with just "package {". How do I put the character files in a folder called, say, "characters"? I've tried a bit, but I can't get it to work. I moved them to the folder, made them start with "package characters {" and tried to "import characters.*;" in eventually just about every class, when just importing them to the Game_Master and Arena didn't work.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Splitting Up A Class Into Multiple Files?

Jul 15, 2009

I've got a class that I create that extends the EventDispatcher class. My class has lots of variable declarations and getter and setter functions. I would love to split up the class into multiple AS files so that I can organize the variables and functions by category. Is there any way to do it and still maintain a relationship between all of the files so that one can easily call a function or a variable that exists in another? And so that other classes in my application can refer to one reference when accessing public functions in any of the AS files.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Loading Multiple Sound Files With A Single Class?

Nov 11, 2009

I am working on a simple game for kids. The game revolves around the alphabet and it is all voiced. So I have a good number of sound files that I need to call on at any given moment.In AS2 I would just link all of the sound files to variables at run-time and have them ready to play when the interaction dictated it.... with the way "linkage" has changed in AS3... I feel like it would be a bad idea to have over 50 different class files (one for each sound file) so I am looking for a cleaner solution... that and I am guessing that having redundant class files misses the point.I haven't had much luck finding a forum post or tutorial that talks directly about this type of issue but the idea is a little foreign right now so I am sure I have stared directly into the gold mine and not noticed. I am very interested any thoughts or links on the subject.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Using .as Files In A Flash Game?

Jun 24, 2011

I worked mostly with the good-old Macromedia Flash MX 2004. Recently, I had a school assignment to make a flash project, in which I created a basic game that sort-of worked, but it amazed my teacher anyway. Now, since I still have the characters and graphics, I would like to redo the game in a more professional manner (not like: placing 50 lines of AS3 in one frame, inside a MC, inside another MC, inside another MC, which was all under a mask on the main stage). What I would like to do is write '.as' files to contain the AS3 script and other components of the game.

I have found that Flash Builder 4 is a good tool for writing code, but I don't know (or understand) how the code can mix with the Flash timeline and MovieClips?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Updating Game Via .as Files

Jul 12, 2007

Im working on a Flash that loads all its scripts and stuff from external .as files. Basically making the .swf a client of sorts to display and execute, while the .as files on server contain all the functions and basically the game itself. I want to make sure that when someone views the .swf, the .as files and all thier code are loaded again and again so I can update the game without having to open the original .fla at all. I really just want to have to write in the .as files to update, since its just basically a text file, I can open it anywhere with notepad and add code.

I just cant figure out how to do this. #include wont work because all the code is placed in the .swf during compilation. Thus, I'd have to open the .fla. #include is the only way I can think of to load code into Flash. Does anyone else know another way?

Flash :: Using An External Class With Multiple Frames On The Timeline And Multiple Stage Placed Buttons

Sep 21, 2010

I have a problem when making flash applications with more than one frame that has symbols placed on it in that I can't declare all of the event listeners for the objects at the same time and I have found that even if I put them all on the first frame, add the event listeners, then click through to the next frame then the buttons won't work on that frame.

Does anyone have any idea how I could solve this? I did consider myself a fairly competent AS3 programmer until I realised I had no idea how to handle this sort of thing. Solved: I initialised the clips from my external class and then addChild'd and removeChild'd them as I needed to and placed their x and y on addChilding.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Making A Game With Multiple Levels?

Feb 10, 2011

I'm currently making a game with over 100 levels. I have a level select screen where you can go to any of the 100 levels.I want it so that only level 1 is unlocked first then when you beat it level 2 unlocks and so forth.What's the best way to go about this? I was thinking an external text file maybe like this:

Level1:Unlocked:UnBeaten
Level2:Locked:UnBeaten
Level3:Locked:UnBeaten

and so on,then when the levels are unlocked and beaten updating the text file. Is this possible? Even making a class which stores level variables including beaten and locked.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Make A Flash Game Have Save Files Using Shared Objects?

Dec 13, 2009

I'm trying to make a flash game have save files using shared objects and I'd like to keep all the data in one file with several children.

The three things I'd like to do are:Check whether the file exists (create a new file if it doesn't), then check whether to child named with text in an imput box exists, and if it doesn't create a new file (using the text in an imput box), and then set the value of that node to 0.

Then later I'd like to change that node to another number (the easy part).I'd also like there to be a way to disable the shared objects (incase the user doesn't allow shared objects).I've tried to do this myself using a few tutorials, but I could get it to work.I couldn't use the text in the input box to name the child,and I couldn't check the size of the child node to see whether it existed or not.

Character ANiamtion In Multiple Frames Not Playing In The Game?

Mar 28, 2009

So I have a MC character and have him moving with the arrows. Now there are multiple(5) frames inside of this MC. Walk Animation(which is the first frame in the MC), Standing Animation, etc. So when I hit left arrow he walks and the walk animation cycles. BUT!!! When I crouch, etc. It doesn't loop the animation it just sits on a still image (as if I did not have an animation on that frame). What am I doing wrong?The code i'm using after my if statement is gotoAndStop(frame)Within each MC there are more MC's and so on, I don't know if this screws with it.Here is an FLA, the code is partly me but ultimately from disastamaans tutorial(on the kongregate website) for basic platforming. I'm just trying to learn right now.Forgot to add that currently I have a total of five frames.1 Animated-walk2 Animated-stand3 Animated-jump4 Animated-crouch5 Animated-crouch walkThose are my five frames, and 1,2, and 3 work fine, only 4 and 5 won't animate?

Multiple Instances Of Dynamic Text Slows Down Game?

Feb 25, 2011

My game is rather dependant on dynamic text fields, for giving players in game hints, signalling to them how far they've progressed (round/wave), how many points they've scored for destroying an enemy ect.

It's come to my attention that, the game lags whenever I update these dynamic text boxes. This happens particularly with the in game messages, (black glow filter) that fade in and out. Without any dynamic text messages at all, the game seems to run fine even on battery saving mode/slow computers.

Is there anyway to keep the dynamic text and get rid of the lag? I think I've tried all the different options for the textfields (I'm using CS4):Character Embedding Bitmap/Antialiazed text (Bitmap works slightly better) Multiline/single line Non selectable [URL]..

ActionScript 3.0 :: Class Creating Multiple Objects Of Another Class?

Feb 12, 2009

I have a class that represents a turret in the center of my screen.When I hold down SPACE, I want it to create a "bullet"-object that moves in the direction of the turrets cannon, every frame the SPACE key is held down. I am having problems with this cause I am getting this error when I am trying to create the object:

Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

This is where the error occurs:

ActionScript Code:
public function chaingun(x_:int, y_:int, rot:int, cd:Number, spd:Number, sprd:Number, life:Number) {
this.Cooldown = cd;
this.Speed = spd;

[code]....

PS: What happens is that when I press the SPACE key, the "turret" class event handler runs the function "Shoot_Chaingun" and that function creates a new Chaingun-object (which actually is a bullet), that inherits the x, y, and rotation of the turret, along with some additional varaibles, including lifetime. Then upon creation, I use "addChild(this)" to add it to the main stage, and "removeChild(this)" once it's lifetime is up.

EDIT: And also, I just realized I don't have a MovieClip linked to this chaingun class. How do I make sure that every time a chaingun object is made, the MovieClip is also loaded?

Actionscript 3 :: Game Development - Embed External Data Files For Run-time Retrieval?

Jul 30, 2011

I'm writing a Flash game where the game levels are saved in small plain-text files, which I want to embed in the swf file. My current solution has a distinct code smell in its repetition, and I'm certain that there is a better way. My code is basically: In a LevelLoader class, embed all the levels

[Embed( source="levels/1.dat", mimeType="application/octet-stream" )]
protected var level1:Class;
[Embed( source="levels/2.dat", mimeType="application/octet-stream" )][code].......

There are a couple of problems with this approach: I have to add a line for embedding each level. Optimally, all files in a folder would be automatically embedded.A level can't be "prepared" from a string. I'd like to be able to pass LevelLoader a level number or level name as a string.I think that all strings are stored in memory rather than on disk.How could I program this "correctly"?
