ActionScript 3 :: Accessing Instance Of Display Object On Mid-Timeline Frame

I have the Dynamic Text field that has an instance name on a mid-timeline frame in Flash CS4. I have a class that inherits from Sprite, and which is always added to the stage on instantiation. How can I get a reference to my Dynamic Text instance from this class?

Example:
My Main class (linked in Flash's publish settings) goes like this:

Game Container extends MovieClip, and draws some pretty gfx. On Frame 8, in the Flash IDE, there is a Dynamic Text element instance named "scoreText". I want to access this from the GameContainer class. Possible?

I have created some (TextInput, ComboBox, CheckBox) Component instances  (created as a public objects) in a Document class and added them to the stage.
 
Now I have created a custom class for a movieclip in library and instantiated it in the document class (also a public instance).
 
I need to access the component instances in the custom class. How to do this ?
 
Also, Is it a good practice to use ENTER_FRAME event frequently ? because if I can't access the above components instances in the custom class then I will be left with no choice but to use ENTER_FRAME event in the document class every time I need to change some value in the components...

I have an external swf "advert_3.swf" loading into the main index.swf.

advert_3.swf has two buttons: one needs to go to "services" frame the other to "events" within a content_mc which is in the index.swf.

I don't understand this:

1. I have a class, UIMain, which extends MovieClip
2. There is an instance of UIMain on frame 2, with instance name of "main"
3. Document class contains:

ActionScript Code: public var main:UIMain; 3. I put this on frame 2 as a frame script: ActionScript Code: trace(main) I get null. Why? How can I fix this?

I've googled this to no avail, I've only found how to manipulate the stage itself and not a display object on it,I have a movie clip on the main timeline with instance name displayName. I created a button that should change what frame displayName goes to (in order to...did you guess it?! diplay the Name of the button.So I am trying to write the code in a reusable fashion and have the buttons all linked to a class called GeoPuzzle. Inside GeoPuzzle I instantiate a touch event and run the code. However, the function has to be able to change displayName in the main part of the timeline and, of course, the compiler says displayName doesn't exist because I'm in a class and I'm talking about the stage.[code]How can I tell displayName to change it's current frame from within display object class?

I need to access a non-display list top-level (Parent? Ancestor? What's the correct term?) object from a display list object, and I don't know how.

In my code, ResultX is an instance of my custom class Result. Card is a sprite, a visual representation of the ResultX object, defined inside the Result class and attached (or removed) to the stage via a separate function inside the result class as needed.

I want to refer to the correct Result object when the user clicks on the corresponding card to call a function there. In accessing the sprite manually, ResultX.card works fine, but I don't know how to go upwards trough the path - card.parent (or actually target.parent, since it's done via event) just returns Main, of course.

how to access a property of a child of a DisplayObject.

within a class i have an object with the variable name: btnLMain i have assigned it a name property: btnLMain.name = "btnLMain"; btnLMain also has a property: btnLMain.clickNum = 0; // thats the one i need to access when i instantiate the class (btnL) containing this code in the parent class i need to access the property "clickNum" so i did this:

displayObj.clickNum++;

but then i get the error: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property clickNum through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObject.

so then i reviewed documentation and from what i understand i am not able to access the property of the child of the DisplayObject as it is a static property...

so now i am trying to figure out how to access that property in the child Class.

IDE :: Accessing An Object Placed On A Frame?

Ok, so I made a custom class, but I did not want to add all the text to it through code (much easier to type it in flash on the frame). I name the instance aScoreBoard.

As my code runs, I need to call some of the functions that are part of the ScoreBoard class. As the code gets to this point, I try this line:

aScoreBoard.UpdateScores(passArray);

which will update the scores on the scoreboard. When that line in AS3 tries to execute, I get this error:

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Main/Main:ayEnd()[C:projectsDev_LearningLongJumpsrcMain.as:616]
at Main/Main::ButtonAfterJump()[C:projectsDev_LearningLongJumpsrcMain.as:606]

Is there a way to do things this way? or will I have to go and do all the extra text entering in the code?

I have a collection of movieclips, I would like to create a clone (a new instance) of a instance everytime I create a new object.

For example

var s:Star = new Star(); // star-shaped movielcip
addChild(s);
// then I want to duplicate an instance of s and add it beside s

For an example like above, it's simple enough to create a new instance with a different name and just add it to the display list. But I have a list of objects I would like to clone as a group...?

I have got a Swf file that contains only two frames, one has a timeline object called movie, the other doesn't. I place a trace(movie); statement in both the EnterFrame event listener and frame scripts on each frame and i found that the object movie is not available in EnterFrame event but can be accessed in the framescripts.[code]So I am just wondering when the timeline object is available during processing a frame and i can access the object? And from the output, it seems after the the SWF file being setup, there is no EnterFrame event dispatched for the very first frame, is that true?

Flash :: Reference Var From Frame On Timeline In An Object Class?

I'm using Flash Professional cs5/AS3 I'll try and describe this the best I can. I'm new to ActionScript. So, in my timeline I have a var on a frame that represents "lives" and i have some code in the timeline that takes down the number of lives depending on certain events, which all works great.

so, now i wanted to make a constructor class that I could reuse for a bunch of movie clip objects and I only want these objects to be able to move if the lives variable is greater than certain number. So now, building my constructor class for these objects i just wanted put an if statement that is looking to see if the lives are greater than a certain number, which if it is then should make these objects do what i want...But, when i run the project I get "1120: Access of undefined property lives."

lives is the var I made obviously like I said, and it works fine being referenced everyone else except when I make a new .as file for these objects then try and reference it. I get the same error when I try and establish "lives" in the main project class too. I'm not sure where I should put this var or how I can make it so i can reference it from an object class. I'm not really sure how to word or describe my issue which has made it hard to search for a tutorial.

Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?

I am using swfLoader to load external flash movies in my flex/actionscript code. If the loaded swf was made for the newer flash player versions (I believe 9.0 or more) it loads as a flash.display.MovieClip object which has methods for play/pause and go to frame. However if the loaded swf was made for older flash player (I believe 6.0) then it loads as flash.display.av1movie which doesn't have methods for play/pause. Is there a way I can play / pause the av1movie from my flex code.

I've got these Flash students I TA for a course, and they are doing drag and drop exercises and have come across some weirdness.(They are using a frames based design to represent different pages of activity, with a menu to goto each frame under user control.)At author time:

1. they set up drag and drop as3 for an object on a particular frame.

2. when startDrag is initiated, they moved the dragged object to the top of the display list, so it appears to float above all other objects as the user drags.

at runtime,a problem appears:the object seems to have been pulled out of the frame, and now floats in a display list above any frame that may be advanced to.What's going on here? It's like the object got pulled off the authortime stage and now is disconnected. Going back to the drag and drop frame shows the original object again, reinstanced, along with this copy that got pulled out.

If I create a rectangle with 100px width and 100px height and then rotate it, the size of the element's "box" will have increased.With 45 rotation, the size becomes about 143x143 (from 100x100).Doing sometimes like cos(angleRad) * currentWidth seems to work for 45 rotation, but for other bigger angles it doesn't.At the moment I am doing this:

I am wrapping my brain around OOP in AS2. I am making two posts on two different subjects. My question here is: when should I use local instance variables, and when should I attach new properties to the instance object? (Feel free to correct my terminology.) Let's say I have a class for a scrolling background, which scrolls when I mouse over its edge. I want to put these values somewhere:

1) How wide is the border in which a mouseOver makes it scroll? This is basically a semi-constant I set it up once and keep it the same, unless the user changes it in an options menu to make the border wider or narrower. Call this scrollBorderWidth.

2) How fast is the background scrolling now? I want to track this so I can smoothly change the scroll speed over several frames. This is often changed. Call this scrollSpeed.

It seems I have two ways I can store and access these values and darned if I know which is better practice. METHOD A: Make them local variables in the class, so the scrolling background instance has them as local vars. I set them up thusly:

I have a symbol (of type movie clip) which is exported for action with AS3 as, say clsAux. From an AS file, I extend this class to program some methods to interact with it The movie clip has, inside, an instance of another symbol, and the instance is called objAux2. The problem I have is that, from code, from the class which is extending clsAux, I can't figure out how to access objAux2. I have tried, from clsAux, to make the movie clip gotoAndStop the frame where objAux2 is instantiated (where the keyframe where it is created is) and then access it like this.objAux2 (error), this[objAux2] (error)... is there any way I can access the instance of a symbol from code?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Accessing Instance Of Document Class

I have a really peculiar problem that relates to the old question of how to best access the instance of the document class from a different class. I usually add a 'this' as parameter when I create an instance of another class inside the document class. Then I save this 'this' in a class property of the type 'Object'. It usually works just fine but lately I have encountered a really bizzarr error.

When my movie first starts I have to load 2 xml-Files. I do that in another class - that calls upon the document class instance when it is finished. I use 4 methods for that, each calling the other, when it is finished.
(like one doing loader.load(urlRequest),
then loader.addEventListener
(Event.Complete, nexthandler) and so on

Now, when I call back to my document class from the last of these 4 methods it works just fine. But when I try skipping the first two methods (since I now need only one xml-File) - my try/catch-statement suddenly complains: TypeError: Error #1010! Like it needed more time to establish the instance of the document class or something similar strange.
