I have knowledge with HTML and CSS and have used Flash to create simple web banners, etc., but I want to get into more advanced Flash design and use Actionscript. I have looked through books but they all seem to require some knowledge of programming already. What is the best way for someone who has no programming experience to begin to learn Actionscript? Is there a specific book someone can recommend, or training course or a person who does 1-on-1 training?
View 7 RepliesI am primarily a programmer, a games programmer by trade who happened to pick up Flash on the side and later through a series of coincidences became a full time flash developer. Most of my work thus far has been code heavy, and has focussed on such things as interacting with web services, localization with xml files, flash video, streaming video, networking etc.
My employer recently lost one of its contractors who built a lot of animation heavy flash apps for them, and as I know my way around the Flash IDE quite well, and have created fairly complex animations in the past, they have asked me to assume a more animation orientated role. To this end, they have offered to send me on courses to get up to speed with Flash animation.
As I know probably 90-95% of Flash's capabilities, and am comfortable with animating / easing / masking / filters / tweening and how to produce these effects programmatically, my interest would lie in a course that teaches fairly advanced uses / best practices of flash. For instance, I find that there are many ways to do things in Flash, but only a few approaches that will get you there without the entire IDE coming to a grinding halt (shape hints is a good one, or perhaps an approach has forced you into a corner with many tweened animations which now need a small alteration made to all of them).
I got some issues trying to watch Lee's Advanced Flash preloader tutorial. The video stops in the begining, cant download full file too. Stops when he begins to explain about the bandwidth.

It's posted here: [URL] The problem is, I can't get the darn thing to work! They've got an example swf posted on that page, and there is the option to download the source...but only if you PAY! All the code is there, which I tried to copy and paste into my own file and publish, but it don't work! (And yes, I did publish it as an html file and view it in the browser, and yes, I did have pop1.htm and pop2.htm files for Flash to open!)

I'm creating a header with navigation buttons that are thumbnails of larger images. When a button is moused over I would like a short transition, that spans the entire stage, followed by a display of a larger image of the thumbnail button on the left side of my stage. The transition is constant for each button but the images pertain to specific areas of my site. Basically I'd like to use this mouseover as a visual preview and when then the button is clicked the visitor is taken to that particular section of my site.

But today I need a website topper (just a little motion graphic 850X226) I made my graphic that I like in After Effects, but now I need to put it in flash so it will play smoothly as a website title. It is importing at WAY too large of a file size when I import it into my website as a movie (>2MB) And how to make it into flash.
I tried "exporting" my comp as a .swf but the swf isn't playing parts of my video are not playing (certain effects and lights). what I need to do to get my title bar to play on a website perfectly.
I wish to have a standard row with string items except two items,no 1 there is a date field and I need a date selector for it.no 2 in another cell of the row I want to put a drop down list box containing text "40" and "20" or you can manually edit the cell so that it displays what ever input you decide (other than 40 and 20)

View 1 RepliesI made a flash animation of a character walking, exported it as .swf, made sure it worked in the flash player, and imported it into After Effects. I used keyframes to map out where I wanted my character to walk. I played it back, first using space bar, then using 0, and my character didn't animate.
I didn't script anything. I was trying to follow these directions to create a walk animation[url]...
At step 4 the guy said, " I won't delve into how to create each frame of the cycle because for one thing, you can have a look at the fla. that I enclose at the end of the tutorial, and for another it's not that hard. I'm sure you can do that!" I didn't download his project because I already know how keyframes work, I knew what I needed to do to make my animation walk the way I wanted it to walk. From there I right clicked on the movie clip, clicked "Export SWF...", and named it.
How can I can I get my character to animate when I preview my work in After Effects? Was there something I should have done while in Flash to make it work in After Effects?

In the library there are four .swf movie files and I don't think they were made in the adobe flash software as they would have taken all day to do. Is there a program out there that can quickly make cool text effects with a transparent background and then be able to import the finished txt effect into adobe flash and use in the fla file?

View 2 Replieswhile ago I made a created a basic effect in Flash CS4 whereby a selection of logos on my web-page gradually disappeared (in the same spot, not shrinking in size first or any other of the effects displayed in the motion presets) think this was done by some kind of preset but it doesn't seem to be in the motion presets panel. I can not seem to remember how it was done and I can't find the relevant settings. I don't know ActionScript so it was definitely a preset.Enclosed are some screen shots of the effect that I mean (stages every few seconds until they completely disappear).

so as you can see it is pretty complex. I want to import as much as I can in vector so that it saves on load time since i already built it in vectors. is it possible to import most of it in vector then just rastor the stuff that might not translate like gaussian blur etc?
I'm having a real bad time with Flash CS5, mostly by how it is exporting stuff and is unable to seemingly work with After Effects CS5, the other big program I use in my workspaceIt seems that anytime I include text into my Flash file in CS5, I am alerted that the text layout has been exported to an external file at which point it will not be imported correctly with any animation in After Effects I've read that this has something to do with the new CS5 TLF mode.

Basically I store data such as time of the note, note duration, pitch, scale, volume, etc.I have 2 questions:How can I export all these data in order to use it in after effects (as a txt file? other formats?);How do I use the exported file in After Effects later on: How do I tell After Effects when to start playing a note in a specific time? how do I associate note height with a specific feature (lets say - square width) - and so on.I DO know some basic coding in after effect (how to associate elements inside After - such as volume and opacity) but I need to understand how to deal with an exported file (and in which format to generate it).

I'm not sure this could be done in flash? is there a way to have some jpeg image with sound effect? or should it be a video? maybe forums restrict adding a flash doc as a signature?
