Actionscript 3.0 :: Access The Root Timeline From A Movie Clip?

View 3 RepliesI'm trying to control the root timeline from a movie clip. On the last frame of the movie clip, I have:
MovieClip(root).gotoAndPlay (10);
which successfully brings me back to frame 10 on the main timeline. However, from here, none of the ActionScript that is on Frame 1 seems to work... the rollovers aren't working, except on those embedded in a separate movie clip.
In Flash CS3 using Action Script 3, how can I tell the main timeline to gotoAndStop(); a certain frame from within a movie clip.
I have a menu (which is a movie clip) with various buttons. Each button corresponds to a certain frame in the main movie. So if a user click on Button1, it should gotoAndStop(1); and Button2 should gotoAndStop(2); and so on.
In Action Script 2, I could use _root.gotoAndPlay(2); from what I understand, but that does not work in Action Script 3.
I am building a small banner, which ideally will have a random string of text fade in (long enough to be read), then fade out...to play another random text.
Each of my texts have been built as movie clips... they fade in, stay up long enough to be read, then fade out. At the end of this, I need the movie to go back to frame 1 of the main timeline, as I am using the following script:
Code:
_root.onLoad = function() {
//generate a random number from 1 to 11
var nRandom = 1+Math.floor(Math.random()*12);
//tell timeline to goto and play the random number 'nRandom'
gotoAndPlay(nRandom);
};
Each of my text movie clips are on a different frame, so I need to call a new random _root frame to play from within the movie clips. So far, all that is happening is whichever movie is chosen to play, goes in a loop.
when I attach an mc inside another movie clip and then during interaction with the movie change the _x of that parent clip to whatever other value than original location, the _x of the child mc does not change as it regards its position in relation to the parent - moving the parent does not move the child within it how do i find the _x of the child in relation to the _root though as opposed to the relation to its parent?
View 1 RepliesHow can i access a function, from the root, that is inside another movie clip?
_root.mc_1.mc_1_1.mc_1_1_1
Inside of the mc_1_1_1 is a function called test_me.How can i call that same function from the root?
I'm designing an interface which lets the user control the timeline of a movie clip, by dragging a slider up or down with the mouse. And I can now drag the slider around, an archivement for which I am way proud. But I have some problems:
1) When the user drag the curser away from the slider movie clip and let go of the mouse buttom, the MOUSE_UP is not detected. I need a way to detect a MOUSE_UP in general.
2) The current frame of mcTheAnimation should always be locked to the vertical position of the slider. How do I access the timeline of that movie clip?[URL]..
What I'm trying to do is very very basic however its flat out not working. I'm trying to add a event listener to a button located within a movieclip thats on the root time line.Here's the code:
Code:
function main_init():void
{
[code].....
I have a movielclip, nav_mc, inside which contains my navigation buttons. Lets say I want to effect the time timeline. Before in AS 2.0 I could simply go
jan1_mc.onRelease = function() {
_root.january_mc.gotoAndStop(2);
}
Now in AS 3.0, nothing works.
button_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, doIt);
function doIt(evt:MouseEvent):void {
_root.january.gotoAndStop(2);
}
That doesn't work. Returns this in errors:
Warning: 1058: Migration issue: The property _root is no longer supported. This property has been removed. The closest equivalent is the Stage, which serves as the root of the ActionScript 3.0 display list..
Neither does
root.january.gotoAndStop(2)
or
stage.january.gotoAndStop(2)
(1119: Access of possibly undefined property ball_mc through a reference with static type flash.display:Stage.)
or
_stage.january.gotoAndStop(2)
or anything!
How do we do this very simple thing now in AS 3.0
TLDR;
How do I reference the _root timeline in AS 3.0 since _root. no longer works in 3.0
I created a movieclip called holder in my Stage and I name it, inside them i put a variable called
name = "whatever"
Now I can't access the variable from root timeline, I try this:
trace(holder.name);
The result gives me undefined! what mean this?
How do you tell the root timeline to root.gotoAndStop(2); from the timeline of a movieClip added using addChild?In the maintime line I have
addChild(fade_eng);
and in fade_eng I have the following on frame 20
root.gotoAndStop(2);
this.gotoAndStop(1);
But I am getting 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method gotoAndStop through a reference with static type flash.display:Stage.
I have a label on my root timeline called "services". I have a services button inside a movie clip. How do I access the main time line to send it over to the page services? I'm using actionscript 3. Back in the day it would have been as simple as root.gotoandplay("services")
View 5 RepliesHow can I access variables defined on root from a loaded movieclip? The loaded movieclip path can differ, so I cannot get to root like parent.parent, for example. I thought something like this.root.varName may work, but it obviously doesn't.
View 3 RepliesI have only been using FLASH CS3 for a little under a month. I have messed about with it to create some basic stuff. However recently I started on a bit of a larger project. I 'm by no means an expert in FLASH CS3 or AS3.My problem -I created a .FLA file that has seven movie clips on the main timeline, each in its own layer. These are listed below in the order they appear within the main time line.
layer ------------ movie clip
ON -------------- on_mc
RIM ------------- rim_mc
NAV-------------- coverbase_mc
PLAYER---------- player_mc
MAIN------------- main_mc
NAMEBOX------- shellname_mc
BASE------------ Base_mc
The art work for these was all imported from adobe photoshop. They all only have one frame on the main timeline. Each movie clip though has its own internal time line and some have further nested movie clips within them.The issue occurs within the NAV layer/coverbase_mc. I placed a movie clip(to act as a button) within coverbase_mc. This movie clip is called navbut_mc.Now, I already have a couple of similar movie clips, that act as buttons, in on_mc and rim_mc these work as I intended them to. However navbut_mc does not work at all in its current position. I get no errors at all on testing the movie but the action that I want it to do does not work even buttonmode = true; will not work on it.
However, if I use the same movie clip in the rim.mc, but obviously give it a seperate instance name (start_mc), then it works as intended. I have looked at various diffrent things but have to admit i'm stummped. Its almost as if when its in coverbase_mc its being hidden by the clips above it, if thats possible.The reasons I need it to work in coverbase_mc are for a) the overall look of the project b)I have some other buttons in that location that need to work from there.
I'm re-writing a movie so that elements of it are modular movieclips, so that should I wish to re-use them, I can simply copy onto the root time-line. What should I watch out for regarding my paths in the modular clips? should I always ensure they are relative or absolute? How example should I reference mouse properties (e.g. _root._xmouse) which which will always be properties of the main movie root timeline?
View 1 RepliesI've got a main timeline .swf file called "blank.swf" which contains nothing but two blank movie clips one called called "pproduct", the other called "ppalette". In the script frame of this main timeline I use the simple "Loader = new Loader();" method to load a URL of an .swf file into the "ppalette" movie clip. The "ppalette" movie clip contains several color chip buttons, each of which use the same Loader method above to load an external .swf into a clip. Here's what I want to do: let those color chip buttons, when the "blank.swf" file loads, be used to load an .swf movie into the "pproduct" clip on the main timeline. I'm wanting to be able to swap depths with various movie clips which will take out the movie which has the palette, but I want whatever that palette has loaded in the original "pproduct" clip to stay there.

I have a button inside a movie clip that when pressed it launches another movie clip. That part works great. The problem I'm having now is either removing the original movie clip or at the very least making it invisible when the next movie launches. So far for my button script this is what I have:
onRollOver=function(){
this.gotoAndPlay("_over");
};
onRollOut=function(){

I am trying to do up the framework for a flash project which has a transistion fadein and fadeout whenever it loads a new content but faces no result. How is this done? I have created fade in and fadeout as movieclips. Is there any script that I can use in my fadein movie clip that tell the root frame to jump to another frame?
View 3 RepliesI cannot seem to find anything of what I need from google.(Well, I can find the reverse method to what i need ) Basically I wish to access a variable declared in the Root Timeline from my Movie clips timeline.

In my document I have my actionscript on Layer 1. In this I duplicate an enemy movie clip.The controls for moving the enemy are inside the enemy movie clip, so setting speed, where to start from etc.On the Layer 1, I also run a script which acts as a timer, and when it reaches set values (eg. 10 seconds) it "levels up" (basically just changes background colour). I wand this to increase the speed of the enemy movie clips so that they get faster. I have this code:
Actionscript Code:
for(i=1;i<=enemies;i++){ _root["enemyRight"].duplicateMovieClip("enemyRight"+i,i+1000,enemyRight);
[code].....
I have on my main timeline a movie clip (emptyMC) that I am loading my external SWFs into and I need to be able to access this loader movie clip from my menu, which is it's own movie clip. As it stands, when I have my buttons on the main timeline I have no issue. But once I put these same buttons into the menu MC I am lost as to how to "get back" to the loader on the main timeline to load and unload the external SWFs.Here is my current code that allows for me to load and unload with buttons on the main timeline. Is there away to modify this same code for my purposes?[code]
View 0 Replieshow to attach a movie clip to the stage or root. I have created a movie clip called movClip and have checked export for actionscript and have chosen "movClip" as its class.I have used this script:
ActionScript Code:
function button1(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var mc1:movClip=new movClip();
mc1.x=0;
[code]....
This attaches the movie clip. Great! Problem is it doesn't attach the movie to the root or stage, but rather as a child of this function?? weird! so when I want to use removeChild(mc1) from a different function from a different button or even from an action set on a different timeline it can't target mc1?So how do I make this work. Basically I want one function from button 1 to attach the movie clip and I want a second function from a second button to remove the movie clip.
I've created a main page with my main links on top, and a container as my body.I load my pages with this action to the container.
on (release) {
if (_root.currMovie == undefined) {
_root.currMovie = "production";
container.loadMovie("production.swf");
[code]....
Inside the production.swf files I've created a gallery with a MovieClip that loads from my library to a container1 inside the production.swf. In the galleryMC(from library), Ive created a close button to unload it from the container1. It works fine from my production.swf file, but when it loads to the main page it doesn't unload. This is the ActionScript that I have to unload the Movie Clip.
on (release) {
this._root.container1.unloadMovie();
}
I have a file comprised of 1 scene and two movie clips. The clips are instanced into the Main Timeline and occupy Frames 1 and 2 respectively.MovieClip1 is an animation that has navigation buttons that appear at the end of the clip. I'm trying to get mouse click navigation to make Frame 2 on the Main Timeline active.
Here is what I'm trying but it is not working:
btExplore.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, ExploreClick);
function ExploreClick (evt:MouseEvent):void {
gotoAndStop(2);
}
this takes the animation to Frame 2 of the Movie Clip Timeline not Frame 2 the Main Timeline.
i made a movie clip name floor, and inside it are movieclips called plan0, plan1, plan2, plan2, and so on.
so to make it easy, it put the movieclips inside the floor movieclip into an array, like this:
daFloor = new Array();
for(a=0; a<10; a++){
daFloor[a] = "plan"+a
}
[Code]....
both didn;t work. how to access the inside movieclips through array;
Just need to figure out how to pass root level variable to a movie clip which contains a dynamic text box to display the passed variable. How is this possible? I usually use global variables when i was coding in AS2...but it appears this feature is dropped in AS3.
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to add an element to the scene on the root level, and when it is dropped within a specific movie clip area, it takes that element and puts it in the movie clip, thus allowing me to mask out the area.
Everything works fine when I add can.addChild(myBox); directly, but the element is not viewable on the root scene, since the movie clip is masked. Right now with the code below, the result is gives me is not good. It creates the element on the root level, but doesn't allow me to put it in the movie clip.

I'm sorry if this post breaks forum conventions, but I searched and didn't find a solution in past posts.
I'm writing a function that highlights components of the animation I've created.
It does this by creating a white box on top of the entire stage, tweening it's alpha value from 0 to 80, and creating a new instance of the movie clip to be highlighted on top of that white box.
I run into a problem when I need to highlight components that are movie clips nested within ones on the top/root level.
When I duplicate instances of nested movie clips, they just exist within the movie they were nested in.
I want to pull those duplicated, nested movie clips into the root area so it rests on top of that white box I just mentioned. How do I take a nested movie clip and pull it out of it's parent onto the top/root level?
I am targeting a a movie clip. The problem is that all the syntax I have found for targetting clips looks like this: _root.sample_mc.sample2.mc. etc. The problem is, my target clip is in an swf that I've loaded into a container clip from my main timeline. So, essentially, I have a home.swf that loads menu.swf into a container called 'location'. In menu.swf, I have an MC called center, which contains the MC I am targetting called 'target'.
View 2 RepliesI'm making obstacles for my game, and basically what I have is a movieclip called char on the maintimeline and a movieclip called floor.. within the movieclip floor i put a movieclip called obstacle in. What I want to do is check to see if char hit obstacle, so itd be like hitTestObject(floor.obstacle) then make the main timeline go to frame 2..
