Flash :: Mouse Event Handling (Make Symbol Transparent To Mouse)?

I have a flash that has a background symbol that responds to CLICK event. On top of that symbol I have a sprite that contains a Bitmap with transparent pixels. Both of them are added to the stage, so they are not related directly.

I want clicks on the transparent pixels on the sprite to go straight through to the background. I have read about mouseEnabled / mouseChildren but have not been able to make these work. The symbol ignores the mouse events when I use them, but does not pass it along as if its transparent.

Is this possible to do with flash? Or will I have to re-route mouse events?

I would like to make a flash movie with a picture, where when the user holds down the mouse button, part of another picture will emerge in that general area (like a magnifying glass looking into another dimension).

Technically, my idea was to make a flash file with two images, and then code the mouse to be able to make the top picture transparent in a circle-like area around the cursor, while the mouse button is down.

But how to do that? I am using Flash CS4, but I don't really care if the solution is in AS2, or AS3, as long as it works

Essentially, the simplified problem is this: I have a parent sprite "PARENT" with two children: One child sprite "A" that contains a number of children which respond to mouseover/mouseout and rollover/rollout events, and a second child sprite "B" that is shown/hidden based on the events in "A".

The problem is that "B" appears over "A" on the stage and when the mouse enters "B", the children in "A" throw mouseout/rollout events. Ideally, I would be able to make "B" completely mouse transparent so that the hit testing in AS3 will "see through it" to the underlying "A" sprite, but this doesn't seem possible.

Note that "B" has mouseEnabled and mouseChildren set to false... but the problem seems to be that the AS3 hit testing engine won't look at siblings when determining mouse hit testing. (i.e. It sees "B" under the mouse, sees the mouseEnabled=false setting, and then moves on to "B"'s parent ("PARENT"), but never checks to see if "A" is under the mouse (which it is)).

I can't make "B" a child of "A", because "A" is clipped and "B" needs to extend beyond this clipping area.

At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to do my own hit testing, which is far from ideal given that "A" contains a large number of children.

I'm playing around with a gallery. I want to add some more functionality.

HERE's the initial code:

import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.display.MovieClip;

I added two buttons for navigation.

goFWD that would have a code imgFwd.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, go_out);

but by adding this event to the button, button itself does the tween, and now the mc:MovieClip.

I don't know why it does that? maybe any ideas?

I thought, if there's such a thing in AS3.0 - a click on this button makes AS think that mc:MovieClip is clicked?? is there anything like that?

how to make it go forward with a button...

When game starts, the car runs automatically. Then we click the SPACE button, movement of car stops. And the door of structure near car is available to CLICK.

But in coding I got this error code:

Basically I am dynamically calling product buttons, which on rollover invoke a child of a dropdown, which in turn invokes children which are squares filled with colour.What I need is for these squares to be clickable which will then colour something else using the colourMatrixFilter (I'll probably start another post for this problem at a later date).For some reason though adding the Square as a child to it's rightful parent - the dropdown makes the listeners completely useless. Add to the stage and the listeners work. I can't work out why either and have done loads of searching.[code] also if someone could show me in the right direction of pulling the XMLdata for the squares (which will be a name attribute).

I have a map of items and I need to know when a mouse moves over the item. Should I add a event listener for mouse over and mouse out to each item (there may be a lot) or I should add mouse over and mouse out listeners to whole container and do some checking to detect whether the target has item on it or not? In the second way it would mean that the event would occur on entering each map tile in the container i would be listening. This seems a bit pointless, but I heard somewhere that I should add as little as possible.. So what should I do?

a) change value
b) delete object

I don't seem to have sufficient mouseclick events for both. I am avoiding using the right click as it has some default options(whose signing off will affect the whole project- not just this). I have mouse click used for change value- how do I use the doubleclick as the single-click events seems to get invoked prior?

I'd like to animate a button when I put the mouse over it. I use mouse_over or roll_over events, ok. But what if I hide the button when I click it and then I show it again later without moving the mouse? The mouse stays over the button, but the button does not animate, as there is no out/over event: I have to move the mouse out and over again to see the animation.

How can I detect the mouse standing on a button without the out/over event?

how to make an animation reverse on a mouse event.I have a FLA with 20 frames with a movie clip (box_mc) with a motion tween applied, left to right then stops. I'm making a puzzle game in Flash cs5/as3 which can have custom puzzle shapes. Basically, the user can draw basic protrusions of a puzzle. Then I create a black and white puzzle piece with a custom function like this var piece:PuzzlePiece= new PuzzlePiece(true,true,false,false); PuzzlePiece is a class that extends Sprite. The four arguments correspond to the four sides of a puzzle piece (up, down, left, right). If the argument is true, it means that protrusion should stick out of that side of puzzle piece. If it's false, it should have a hole on that side, so it fits the protrusion. I first attach the protrusions that stick out, then i flip the protrusions that stick in, attach them to a new sprite (in_part) and invert them with the following function:

The title pretty much sums up what I am trying to do: I haven't started digging into using script in Flash yet, still being very much a beginner.
 
I created a simple file using movie clips nested in buttons so that when I mouseover a letter, it bobs up and down, but I can't work out how to make it return to its original "up" state *smoothly* when the mouse is moved away. If it must involve script please be aware I am a total noob!

I'm triggering the appearance of a tooltip via MOUSE_OVER on a button and I'm finding it keeps getting triggered if I keep the mouse pointer over the tooltip. Both the tooltip and button are MovieClips

If I have a graphic that is fully transparent in places, can I make only the non-transparent portions of the graphic respond to mouse clicks?  I realize I can probably do this with a few lines of code, e.g. detect the click and then check the alpha value under the mouse.  But I was looking for something simple. For example, in Director there is an "alphaThreshold" in a graphic that determines at what alpha value a bitmap will respond to mouse clicks.  Does Flash / AS3 have a similar capability?

It will run instantly in your Flash Builder if you put the 2 files below into a project.I'm trying to display a List of strings and a confirmation checkbox in a popup:In the real application I dispatch a custom event with the string selected in the list, but in the test code below I just call trace(str);My problem: if I use click event, then the window closes, even if I click at a scrollbar (the !str check below doesn'twhen an item had been selected in previous use).
