I just recently been using a lot of prototype javascript stuff, and was wondering there was anything like the "bind" method, for use in AS3. It's proved quite useful to be able to look both at the event.target as well as the class object the handler function might be associated with.

It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

The code runs,and does everything expected but the compiler sends out that warning. Do I have some formatting issue?P.S. View 1 RepliesI have mutliple instances on the stage of a custom ThumbNail class. As you click on a particular instance an associated enlarged external image will load. As this is happening I want to make sure that the ThumbNail class animations are inactive for all instances.
I was thinking of using a Boolean variable that would get set right before the image is loading. Using event.currentTarget should help with the instance that was clicked but how do I gain access to the instances that were not clicked?
I have a class called "download" and an URLStream object inside it called "urlStream".
From outside the class, I am adding a progress listener like this[code]...
Everything works fine inside the onFileProgress function and bytesLoaded, bytesTotal are read correctly.
What I need is a way to point to the download class from inside the onFileProgress function so that I can retrieve some other public variables defined in the "download" class.[code]...
I'm not sure if it's possible, but can you override a variable of a parent class like you can override a function? I'm trying to create my own event class that can handle the target property. I have a custom imageLoader class, but when it dispatches it's loading complete event:
ActionScript Code: dispatch(new Event("load_complete")); and a listener picks it up, e.target = null where I would like e.target to equal the imageLoader instance that has finished loading.
Does anyone have an answer or a better way to accomplish what I am aiming for?

I ll get the events in these listeners in the loadImage class. But i want to trigger a function in the calling class or root or stage, when these loader events are fired.
I have a MovieClip that is composed in a parent (non-display object) class. We register an event listener against that movieclip - a CLICK handler for example.
With event.target I can get a reference to the MovieClip from within the event handler. But how can I pull a reference to its composing class?
I could simply add a "parentClass" property on the dynamic MovieClip class, but I'm wondering if there's a more elegant/idiomatic way of doing it that I should consider?

I have flash project (ActionScript 3), which has a several frames. Each frame contains some unique controls (buttons, textInputs, etc) with unique ids. I want to add event listeners to these controls:

I don't know, how to define time, when AddResource will be loaded, after gotoAndStop. I tried to use setTimeout - it works sometimes and makes unwanted delays. So it is bad idea, in my opinion. Each frame has a lot of controls, they might be changed in future - so, I don't want to use this way (Get MovieClip in another frame). If it is possible, I want to keep ActionScript code in *.as files, not on timeline (flash cs5: when I change frames in a movieclip, event listeners pointed to one object in the previous frame are removed).

The basic idea is that I have a FlashMOGService class which has an RPCSocket member that it may share with other FlashMOGService objects. The idea is that you can create two distinct FlashMOGService objects and have them both connect to the same host/port via socket. I use my special RPCSocket class for two reasons:
1) Let developers use one port but separate functionality into two distinct services...a form of multiplexing i guess
2) RPCSocket adds functionality to the standard Socket class that works to serialize and unserialize data and get it where it needs to go. The essence of the problem here is that created a class with a FlashMOGService object as a member and has tried to assign a private method of his class as an event handler to the FlashMOGService object:

My initial thought is that this should be fine because it's all done within the class. However, when I consider the monkey chain that results in this function being called, it seems almost logical that it wouldn't work. The problem is that the browser freezes when a socket message arrives that tries to call the service's client method, _service.client.firstClientMethod. This client firstClientMethod is attempted when data arrives from the server on the Socket (an RPCSocket, actually). The RPCSocket class deserializes the socket data and extracts an array with a service name, a method name, and an array of arguments. It looks into its own private class variable (an array of services using the RPCSocket) and tries to invoke whatever function was assigned thusly:

View 2 RepliesI'm creating a game in flash for a university project, and learning actionscript and programming as I go. I'm very much still at a beginner level - at the moment al I have is some actionscript for drawing rectangles and moving them about the screen. This is what I'm having trouble with at the moment: I have a class called 'Creature', and I want instances of it to interact with each other. I want them to do something when they come within a certain distance of another instance. And I want them to be able to pick a random other instance to get the location of, in order to do something with that information.
What I think I need is: A function for telling the distance between two (x,y) points.
A way of referencing the nearest other instance of the class. And a way of randomly selecting from all of the instances of the class.
Is is possible to bind class properties to mxml components ? E.g.: I have a class A.as with a String property nameValue. What I want to achieve is always having the latest value of a mx:Text component in nameValue.

this is only when the data is bound to a List as an ArrayList, though. I had it in a Datagrid before (just as an Array) and it did not cause any issue. I'm not expecting to be able to bind any data back to the class 'object' not even sure which object exactly it's referring to.
My list data-provider is an ArrayList.. populated by a result event from an SQL query contained in another class:

The day class I have is a data holder to get all the data (from several tables) for a 24 hour span.. I have classes for each individual datatype for editing them. But I'm not sure do I even need to worry about the warning if I don't plan on editing the values? it completely spams the console though whenever I touch anything, so I really would like to get rid of it. I tried an object proxy as I saw described elsewhere but nothing changed. The text is in label fields right now anyway, which can't even be edited.
