IDE :: Changing Pre Existing MovieClip's Instance Behaviors
Mar 20, 2009
I've created a graphic and have multiple instances of the graphic on the stage. I've recently decided to change the graphic to a movieClip. However, changing the original clip's type to movieClip doesn't apply the change to all instances that I've already placed on the stage; they're still all graphics.
The only way I've been able to fix it is by manually selecting each one and changing their instance behavior from 'graphic' to 'movieclip'. Is there a faster way to do this, be it a command or an actionscript code? Anything that doesn't require me manually changing each instance would be a huge time saver.

Here's what I am trying to do: I have an array of movie clip instances called iconArray[]. what I want to do is create the effect of shifting icons on screen right or left. Lets say we're shifting the icons left--what I want to happen is the icon on the left (iconArray[0]:MovieClip) to tween to the left about 20-30 pixels and then fade out, which I can currently achieve. The problem is I want copy the instance of that icon as a temp MC and push it onto iconArray and then have it fade in tween from the right.
In other words, the left most icon should "wrap" back around to the position of the right most icon but in order to create the illusion without having the left most icon pass over the other icons (which looks tacky) I want to create a copy of the left most icon and push it onto the array as a new movieclip with the same image and have that fade in from the right while the other one dies off.
[Code]...
it does not create a new icon, is seems to point to the same movie clip as iconArray[0] and any adjustments I make to the x or alpha affect the original MovieClip instance and not the new on I created and pushed onto the array.
How does one go about copying a movieclip, storing it in it's own instance/var so it can be displayed and manipulated as a separate entity?

When you're in the flash application, you can watch the properties of an instance. In the properties tab, you can also click "Swap", this will ask you about which instance you would like to use. The original object will now change into another movieclip. So, how do I do this with Action Script?

I have a base class which is being created via remote_object [RemoteClass alias] from the server.I have other specialized classes that are derived from this baseclass, but serialization with the server always happens with the base class.The base class has meta data that defines what the derived class is, for example
[RemoteClass (alias="com.myco...')]

I have a sample fla file, but I can't find where to edit the scripting in it. Basically there are 2 buttons, each one going to a different URL. I can't figure out where to change the URLs they go to. I've looked literally everywhere in flash.

I have a movie clip called volumecontrolbackground_mc that has a gradient in it. on rollover I want it to change the color of the gradients and on roll out go back to the default values. Any pointers on how I would accomplish this? I have seen the methods where you create a new movie clip and fill it with a gradient but none where you modify a existing gradient.

Whilst I did some flash YEARS ago, I am now needing to get back into it. And whilst I have a course booked, I need to do something now. I have downloaded a flash file with a mask from an image website. I want to double the size of the file, but the masking now only highlights part of the image.

I'm reletively new to flash, and am trying to modify a template and am running into a problem and I don't seem to know why Flash is acting so strange. I am going into a movie clip to edit the color of an item, and when I do so with a tint, it overrides any additional effects such as light, and text. The color appears almost as if it were just slapped on top of everything. When I edit the color in advanced mode, it is really a hit-or-miss to get the correct color, and will only modify when changing the offset RGB.
And also when doing this, the text gradually changes color, for example: there are 4 items in total that I want to edit the color of. Each item is a different colored box with text on the front (for a main Navigation of the website). --- The first item, the text will stay white. Gradually through the second and third items it starts to change, and by the fourth / last item, the text is completely blue. Is it possible for a portion of text to be connected somehow to an object within the animation in a movieclip? If so, is it possible to go inside and edit this? -the shape, animation, and text? Is there an easier way to change the color of an item inside a movie clip? I can supply additional information if needed.. files etc.

I'm completely confused by this. An Adobe Flex WindowedApplication has a 'menu' property, which by default is assigned a FlexNativeMenu instance, which is used to create a native menu tree for the application.For example, on OS X, if I create a WindowedApplication, I get the standard 'application menu', 'File', 'Edit' and 'Window' menus created on startup. The question is, how do I append additional menus to this without creating an entirely new menu? I want to use the default OS X menus as a starting point and add my own. If I assign menu = new FlexNativeMenu; I just get a completely empty application bar with no menus at all.

I'm making a demo project for myself to learn. The project is somewhat similar to "The Story of Stuff" website.But I making this demo and going step by step. I have a small working project but the video clips are embedded and now I'm launching them externally using the flv playback component.I have only made the very first video clip external that is loaded in using the component. The rest of the clips are embedded.
As you can see I made this so when the picture icons appear and when you click on one the video pauses and when you click the close button on the small window that pops up the video resumes.(un-pause)
Basic time line controls. (Linear)
But of course this does not work when I load the clip externally using the flv playback component.My question is , how can I control (Play/Pause) the flv playback instance(s) with my existing icons?

I want to make a new instance of an existing symbol (movie clip or graphic) when an object hits the side of the stage. I have the code to figure out if it hit the side of the stage, i just need to know how to make a new instance and make it show up where the ball hit. I also want to be able to have multiple of these instances on screen.

It is very simple to retrieve data from a database and display it inside a DataGrid. However, what are the current practices to push the changes in the DataGrid back to the database? One can achieve this by inserting a lot of meta information, however, it is very tedious and not reusable.

I've written a simple MovieClip replacement that converts an existing imported MovieClip to a sequence of BitmapData. This removes the requirement for Flash to render vector data in the MovieClip on each frame.
But BitmapData has a huge memory footprint. I've tried converting the BitmapData to a ByteArray and using the compress() method. This results in a significantly smaller memory footprint. But it has proven impractical. For each redraw, I tried uncompressing()'ing the ByteArray, then using SetPixels to blit the data to the screen, then re-compressing() the frame. This works but is terribly slow.
So I was wondering if anybody else has an approach I could try. In Flash, is it possible to compress bitmap data in memory and quickly blit it to the screen?
I wonder how native animated GIFs work in Flash. Does it uncompress them to BitmapData behind the scenes, or is frame decompression done on the fly?

For buttons like the MENU or BACK button you can just add a listener for KeyboardEvent and check if the event keyCode is Keyboard.BACK or Keyboard.MENU.However I don't see anything for knowing if the phone's volume buttons were pressed.Is there a way to listen for volume up and volume down keyUp/keyDown events in AIR (ActionScript 3)?

I have a FLA in which I've added three movie clips, each with a unique name. I've set the MC name through the properties panel as well as giving the MC a name when converting it from a image to a MovieClip (by clicking F8).
When I run the swf and output the names of the children in the swf, I find that the name of one of the MovieClips changes, for example from myFirst_MC to instance8.
To output the MovieClip names I loop through all the children of the swf and output the name like this:
for(var i:uint=0;i<numChildren;i++){
var display:DisplayObject = getChildAt(i);
trace( display.name );
}
Why does the instance name of a MC change? And how can I stop this from happening?

I'm confused about changing an instance's animation. I'm working on a really simple game to learn AS3 and I've got the controls down, but don't know how to change the animation of the player instance. I have movieclips for different animations, which I assume I should, but don't know how to switch the instance's appearance between them.

I have a variable called "framenumber" and a movieclip(drawing) with six frames. Each frame of the movieclip has another drawing in it.In the main movie, this movieclip exists over several frames and keyframes. I even do a motion tween with the clip. Now what I want to do, is change the value of framenumber (for example 2) and then do a drawing.gotoandstop(framenumber). So then, the drawing in frame 2 of the movieclip should be shown. But here comes the problem. If I do that,the drawing (in frame 2 of the movieclip) only appears in the frame of the main movie where I put the drawing.gotoandstop(framenumber) command. But in the other frames of the main movie, the initial drawing is kept. How can I let the drawing change everywhere where the movieclip exists? So actually I want to know how I can change every instance of a movieclip, no matter where it is in the movie. Or maybe there's a way to change the (library) symbol itself, so that every instance of it changes along with the library symbol?

i'm playing around with Senocular's brilliant transform tool. Here's the code that I'm having issues with - it targets the instance name, which is great and works perfectly.
ActionScript Code:
_transformTool.targets = [pasteBoard];
_transformTool.activeTarget = pasteBoard;
Here's the issue. When I have an MC placed on the stage with the instance name of 'pasteBoard' the above code (which tells the transform tool what to transform), works just great. However, when I place the MC on the stage with AS and name it, the transform tool can't find it . Here is the code I'm using to place the MC:
ActionScript Code:
var pasteBoard:_pasteBoard = new _pasteBoard();
addChild(pasteBoard);
pasteBoard.name = 'pasteBoard';
pasteBoard.x=128.00;
pasteBoard.y=300.00;
Now, surely this should work as I'm even giving it an instance name? But it does not, it does not work even with no instance name, or when the class object name is different than the instance name. Weird huh? Surely this should work just fine as I'm doing exactly the same thing as placing it on the main timeline, just doing it with code. But the transform tool, referenced by the code at the top of this post, can't find pasteBoard.
Do I need to alter the code at the top to find pasteBoard by class instance? how would I do that?

I've got a frame of code with two boxes on the stage. If you click on of them, it runs this code:
ActionScript Code:
charSelect=1;
And if you click on the other box it runs this code:
ActionScript Code:
charSelect=2;
Now, on my main frame of code, I've got an init() function which runs all the initialise commands. It includes this:
ActionScript Code:
function init() //Loads assets to the stage and starts animations {
if (charSelect == 1) {
character.addChild(character);
} if (charSelect == 2) {
characterFemale.addChild(character);
}}
These functions basically let you select which character is loaded to the stage with the instance name 'character'. All my control code is written in relation to the instance name 'character'. However, after I've clicked the box which selects which character to load to the screen, I get this error message:
ActionScript Code:
Scene 1, Layer 'Layer 1', Frame 2, Line 155 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method addChild through a reference with static type Class.

In the following code I would like to be able to change which object the code affects depending on which parameter name is passed to it:
Code:
EventCentral.getInstance().addEventListener(ProjectEvent.SOME_EVENT, handleSomeEvent);
function handleSomeEvent($event:ProjectEvent):void
[Code].....
I could write it all out with ifs and else ifs for each parameter but this code is already part of quite a large structure and it would be more elegant to be able to do it with re-usable code.
I'm trying to do it is particularly idiomatic to actionscript anyway

I have an issue where I have a movieclip with two frames, both of which have a textfield.
The problem is, when I call gotoAndStop(2) and try assign text to the textField in that second frame I get a null Pointer exception, as if the textfield doesnt exist anymore.
Code:
public function select(){
this.gotoAndStop(2);
this.myLetter.text = "X"; //there is a textfield on frame two called myLetter
}
Its simple code but it doesn't seem to be working.

I have an existing MovieClip called mc1 on the Stage. That MovieClip has 2 keyframes, the first one has an image in it, and the second one is an empty keyframe.After compiling, I want to load an image (image1) from the library into the the firstkeyframe, and replace the existing image.
I know I need to right click on the image in the library, export it, give it a class name, and I need to assign an url to it which would be 'image1' in this case.I was thinking of this, but I cannot get the url right, and I dont know how to refer to the firstkeyframe after I've loaded it...
var Imagecontainer:Loader = new Loader();
var image:URLRequest = new URLRequest('image1');
Imagecontainer.load(image);
mc1.addChild(Imagecontainer);

I have a dummy clip in my Flash application where I want to load the final content to.Now everything seemd to work. When I do a addChild() on the complete event, the addedToStage event is triggerd, I can do a gotoAndStop but it isn't visible. Just when I do a tage.addChild() or a root.addChild() I can see it. Even "root.myClip_mc.addChild()" doesn't work. The clip where I want to add it is at position 0,0.
