Flash :: Creating A Custom File Format For Adobe Air?
Feb 16, 2010
I'm just starting out with my first Adobe Air project (I'm a pure AS3 developer by trade).I'm planning to build an image editor which supports layers. I'm wondering what the best way would be to store an entire project including layer data (images) to a users hard disk.I'm wondering if there is any pros/cons in creating a custom file format for my application. The idea is I will be able to store an entire project in a single file. This will be done by writing meta data to the file's header such as the image dimensions, layer names, layer data offsets etc...I'm trying to be mindful of the issues which might arrise such as maintaining backwards compatibility after adding new project features/meta etc.I guess I'm asking whether people have any advice or experience with creating a custom file format for Adobe Air and if there are any other 'out-of-the-box' solutions to saving 'complex' data to a users hard disk.

I've been looking for some examples on creating a custom statusbar for an AIR application, but haven't found anything really useful. That was until I started looking around in the Tour de Flex AIR app for an example, and it was right there (part of the app itself). Would anyone have some suggestions on replicating this statusbar. The trouble I'm having is that I cannot seem to get the value of a dynamic variable to display. I'm attempting to display the current user.

Is the only way to create new files with AS3/Flash CS3 is with the use of Adobe AIR? or can you do this without using that?I'm trying to do this with a standalone desktop application, NOT a web-based application.I've spent most of the day searching google, and most of the results I've found were from 2006 and earlier and people used the fscommand function, but this seems to be obsolete now. There was one result I saw that mentioned that you would have to have Adobe AIR installed to do file manipulations and save/append to files, but I'm just wondering if there are other options now.

I am looking for a easy way to convert Autocad polygons to swf files. Is there a converter for that? Or is there an intermediatory format that can be used to convert from polygons to the adobe flash swfs. Each polygon would be a swf file.

I have been working on a project for a week and suddenly it crashed during save (nothing strange had been imported or anything i just saved after moving content around) and now i cant open my file again. I contacted adobe support who claim that since the problem is related to the file this is not their problem, what a load of HORSE ****, who should i contact about this dell if its an FLA FILE!? I have already renamed the file to flash.zip then opened with WinRar and repaired as a new zip file to a different folder (which removes the corrupt content which is document something.xml) then i tried renaming this folder back to flash.fla however the file still does not open.

I am using flash cs3 pro and I get the error "Unexpected file format" when trying to open the file, a friend has flash cs4 and has the same error. Is there something I could do to open this .fla file correctly? Or maybe if someone could try opening it and saving it again for cs3?

I am working on a game in flex, and I am trying to figure out how to create menus in the game. I am was thinking it would be easy just to add and remove a child for the menu, but then it would be a pain to make interactive.I am trying to do both a pop up menu and an always on screen menu, like a bottom menu bar, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. I am completely new to flash and flex and don't really know where to start past making the actual game.

I want to create a custom chatback badge in Flash to match the other buttons on my site. I am a newbie to Flash using CS4. I don't have a preference of actionscript 2.0 or 3.0. I've figured out set up the url, but all I want to do is get the little dot next to my name that says whether I am online, busy or offline. It is an html code, and I dont know how to put it into Flash.
Here is the html code:
<img height="9" width="9" style="padding:0 2px 0 0;margin:0;border:none" src="[URL]" alt="">

Which product do I need in order to create a customized flash player (and that is all I need to do)? I have a VP6 Alpha Channel.flv movie (transparent background). I would like to create a custom flash player for my website to display and control this movie.The player needs the following properties:
1. Play the movie transparently (using "wmode"?)
2. Play, pause, volume and exit buttons on the control bar
3. Autohide control bar
4. Logo / text on the control bar
5. Ability to unload itself after the movie ends
Which is the right product for me? Any links on how to create this player would be useful.

I need a progress bar that's kind of in an odd shape, I've attached an image. It's not a preloader; it's for periodic progress while the user is performing other action on the website. I've played and played with tweens from a symbol of a fill of the bar to no avail. I'm not great at flash, so apparently even this simple thing is a stumbling block for me. Since it's an odd shape,I was hoping I could somehow use a paint bucket fill of the symbol or something like that to create "progress", and simply send a "stop" command when it's at the appropriate level, but I've tried several different ways and just don't have the ability to do it. I can't seem to find anything online that's even close either.

I am creating an order form for my flash site. I have never done this before in flash but I have in visual basic. I have a few questions:
1. Is assigning variable names to checkboxes and radio buttons the same as in visual basic? I mean i know that you probably assign them in the properties. ex..say i name a radio button 'radio1', to run a check in my actionscript whether radio1 was checked or not would it be something like if(radio1){}
2. After the person fills out the form I would like to have the results of the order sent to a pre-specified email adress in a certain format. What would be a good way to do this?

For buttons like the MENU or BACK button you can just add a listener for KeyboardEvent and check if the event keyCode is Keyboard.BACK or Keyboard.MENU.However I don't see anything for knowing if the phone's volume buttons were pressed.Is there a way to listen for volume up and volume down keyUp/keyDown events in AIR (ActionScript 3)?

But the challenge is how should i import this icons in flash that too in vector format. I am following a process which is not really giving me a proper output. Process
1. Export the AI file in swf format
2. Convert the swf to fla using decompiler
3. open the fla to view the icons
Now the challenge is when I follow this process i get a large number of masked layers in flash. For one icon it shows around 80 layers...

I've created a custom format for a TextField text as below:
Code:
var _format:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
var _font:Font = new VerdanaPlain();
_format.font = _font.fontName;
_format.size = 12;
and then I've applied it to a TextField like so:
Code:
var _text:TextField = new TextField();
_text.setTextFormat(_format);
_text.text = "Here is some text";
and for some strange reason, the format does not seem to have any effect on the text in the text field. It still shows using default settings. And yes I have exported the font for linkage.

I'm suddenly getting an "Unexpected file format" error on virtually every Flash CS4 file that I try to open. These are files that I created and I'm trying to open tham on the same computer on which they were created. The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I installed some new fonts, so I deleted those, but that hasn't helped.I've tried retrieving files that I had backed up to a server, and those give me the same error. The only files that I AM able to open are 1) a test file that I created in CS4, saved, closed and reopened, and 2) files that had been created in CS3.

Today I was working on a project in Flash, I restarted my computer because when I was pasting sth. It was pasting "Hello!". After the restart, I opened Flash, It said that the "Essentials xml" couldn't be opened. So it said to go to Window>Essentials reset. I did and I was able to edit again. But before doing that, I tried to open that project, and it Said that it couldn't be found. I opened it manually but still the same. Then I closed Flash and opened it again. And when I opened the project I got : "Unexpected file format".

I'm just getting off the ground as an AS3 programmer and I'm having a lot of trouble getting Flash to recognize my packages. My intention is to keep a code library of all my AS3 source data and have Flash simply go fetch classes from there.
I have set Flash's source path to the following to accommodate my library:
C:Documents and Settings<username>My DocumentsMy DropboxCodeAS3src
However, when I attempt to include a class into a .fla, Flash gives me an error that it can't find the AS class files in the .fla's folder at compile time. So it seems to not be detecting the AS class files in the source path I have set.
Within src, the folders are structured as follows:
srcsivyrmap<AS classes here>
In my AS files themselves, I have written the package and class declarations as follows:
Code:
package sivyr.map {
// Includes
include "flash.display.Sprite"
[code]....
And when I write an include to grab one of these classes, I write it as:
Code:
include "sivyr.map.Grid"
