clip.removeChild(clip.getChildAt(0));
completely remove the child of clip at 0 index? I read somewhere you should set to null to all the references to that clip, but I have no other reference in my code. The clip at 0 was added via a regular addChild().
how do I completely remove a movieclip that is created as a new class.I have an event listener that does a removeChild like this
e.target.parent.removeChild(e.target);
is this enough or do I have to 'null' the object? I can't just do 'e.target = null' because the property is read only. Will the internal garbage collection do the rest for me if I have no references somewhere else?
This is my code

The problem is that even tho I ask to remove the random picked number from array, it can still get repicked.

I am experimenting with e4x. I could programmatically add an attribute to an Xml by doing something like this :
[Code]...
now i have added a name attribute to it programmatically because even though the xml had no attribute called name, after the statement above, it automatically has one now. My difficulty now is how do i , as well, remove the name attribute i have inserted programmatically again?
I have developed a touchscreen application that works perfectly fine except for the memory issue. Basically, the touchscreen app works kinda like a website with navgation on the side and content displaying next to it. I separeate each section into external swfs, and load each one up when it is needed, thinking it would reduce memory used on the pc. But unlike actionscript 2, AS 3 would not remove the external swfs from the memory. You can remove it from the stage and you won't see it, but the swf will still stay in the memory! So... as you navigate through the app, loading up all these external swf, even I do loader.unloadAndStop();, the swf is still there, and they just keep piling up in the memory as you navigate from the app. After leaving the touchscreen for a day or 2, having all these users naviage through it, all the external swfs will just completely consume all the resources and freeze the pc.

View 1 RepliesIn document class action script file I add a movie clip to stage using
Code:
public var square:Square
square = new Square
addChild(square)
So it adds square to stage.Then after sometime I want it to be removed. I call a function "removeSquare" also located in document class. It executes the following code. And it removes the square from stage visualy.
Code:
trace("proff that it's executed")
removeChild(square)
square = null
Then of course I want to add a square to stage again, using code I written at top of the post. And remove it again, and so on..But game is lagging more and more and more. So I guess that the square is not properly removed. If you need more details about my code feel free to say, I just written that since I really doesn't know what else should be important.

I have a movieclip (childMc) that is the child of another movieclip (parentMc) on the stage.My code creates a reference (refMc) to the child movieclip on the stage, and then deletes the previous parent movieclip (parentMc) through a call to function deleteChild. The problem is that the delete is deleting the reference also. How do I break the reference so that the reference (refMc) is kept on the stage? Here is my code:
Stage Code:
var refMc:MovieClip;
var parentMc:MovieClip=this.addChild(new parentSymbol()); // parentSymbol has childMc

I am getting a little fustrated with trying to remove a MovieClip from my stage after I am done with it. On loading my frame, I have a little bit of code in a function that creates a piechart.
var piechart:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
stage.addChild(piechart);
//Then a bunch more to draw the pie chart
So that bit of code is NOT on my "Actions" layer. Now I have a button on this frame that navigates to a different frame in the timeline but when I change frames, the piechart remaines. So, how do I remove this piechart from the stage after I am done with it? I have tries stage.removeChild(...) and others but perhapse I am calling it wrong?

Remove movie clip.But none of their solutions seem to work, for me:Im working on flash CS4 with AS3: I have a very simple movie with a single button called click.On pressing the button, a new instance of coin is created:
this.click.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,justclick);
function justclick(e:MouseEvent){

Movieclips can be more.

I want to apply actions to a movieClip nested inside a dynamicly attached movieClip, with the attachMovie method; it doesn't works when the movieClip is attached by a button:

I've programmed an entire game from scratch, without using class files, and there's no menu yet, and I'm not sure how to reset the game without using class files or resetting every single thing manually.
I'm making a Flash tower defense game with a friend; I'm doing all the code. I'd never used Flash or Actionscript before, so I started off directly programming the gameplay, to figure out if I'd be able to do it. I've done everything from scratch so I didn't know where to start or the "right way" of doing anything, so I figured out as I went along, which went much better than I expected.
So now I've got the gameplay almost completely programmed, the art assets are essentially finished and game looks great and runs (reasonably) well (and the occasional performance problems are due to graphics rather than code), etc. I didn't know how to use class files in AS3 when I started making the game, and when I read up on them and realized you can't import the class files into the project and must open and edit them separately, I was livid and decided not to use them; I was happy with how the coding was going anyway.
So now we've got a game where as soon as you run it, it goes straight to the field and the game starts; we haven't implemented a menu yet. We've reached the point of playtesting and it's becoming a huge nuisance having to quit the SWF and reopen or recompile it every time we want to restart the game, so it's time to program a "Reset" button. I thought this would be as simple as making the stage go to a different frame and back to the first frame, but that doesn't work, so now I'm utterly stuck. It looks like the easiest way to reset a game is to load the entire "game" as an object (or something to that effect, I forget exactly what I've read), then you can unload and reload the game object to reset it? It also looked like it would require class files which I'm hoping to avoid.
I don't think it's feasible to manually remove everything from the stage, reset all the variables, and delete all event listeners and references so everything is reset/garbage collected properly.
Thinking about it more, I'm also not sure how I'm going to get a menu to load before the game in its current state. Maybe I can move all of the gameplay to the second frame and make the menu on the first frame?So, is it possible to reset the game without involving class files?
When I destroy my objects that are on the stage. I usually just removeChild(this) and I remove event listeners of the object. is this all I need to do to completely remove the object ??
View 2 RepliesWith brush_mc you can brush over a mask, wich turns the pixels to transparent in brush strokes.So visually it erases the mask and the masked movieclip appears. I want to trace, if the mask is completely turned transparent. Is it possible to check if the mask is turned completely transparant without bitmapdata?
// this creates a mask that hides the movieclip on top
var mask_mc:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
addChild(mask_mc)
[code]....
Is there a way to make the background of any flash move completely transparent?
