Sep 8, 2010I have a dynamic text box on my stage that is 400px wide. The text box is being populated with flashvars data from an HTML file and auto-sizes (myTextBox.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT) so it will display all content by expanding when the text spans over 400px. But when I trace 'myTextBox.width', it always returns '400'and when I trace 'myTextBox.textWidth' it always returns '0'no matter how much text I push into it through the flashvars.
This is because the trace is only tracing the previewed swf in Flash which has no ties whatsoever to the HTML file and flashvars.Therefore, when previwing the swf, my text box is always empty.The only way to see the content populating the text box is when actually launching the browser with the swf embedded in it.Because of this I cannot seem to be get flash to 'do things' based on the new width/textWidth values of my text box after it has been populated with the flashvars data from the HTML file.How can I get flash to detect the new width/textWidth of my text box after it has been populated by the flashvars data from the HTML file?

Jan 27, 2011I created a somewhat custom Spark button by doing the File > New > MXML skin and basing it on spark.components.button. The problem is that I need to add an extra text field to the button component and dynamically change that text...but of course, the property isn't recognized on a Spark Button.
Is there a simple way to add this field to my custom button skin & its property so it can be addressed? If not, is there a simple way to take what I've done and just extend the Spark Button? I can't seem to find any examples that show how to do it without writing it all up in ActionScript.

Feb 10, 2011I'm trying to draw a background to a text field in AS3.I have a TextField with an embedded font and using autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT. I assign the text to the TextField then call try to draw a roundedRect using the textWidth of the TextField. The text field width is always smaller than the actual text width.Is there another way to get the actual textwidth? I did a few quick google searched but I haven't found anything.

Flex :: 4 - Null-component - Checking If The Cancel Button Component In The Child Component?
Jun 23, 2011I have a component "child" which has a cancel button. Now this component is placed in a state called "newChildComp" I also have another component called "parent". In the parent component, i have a button that dispatches an event. Here is the event code:

so, basically,i am checking to see if the cancel button component in the Child component, while i am still in the parent Compoent, was clicked, if it was clicked, call the cancelButtonHandler. The problem is by the time the addNewChild handles the event, that cancel button was still null. My question is how do i solve this without using the itemCreationPolicy on the cancel button?

Oct 18, 2004I create various movieClips with TextFields in them using the following function.

Lets say that I use the above function with the following statement:
JimMC = AddLabel("JimVision",1);
Then I try to assign a string to the above movieClip with some embedded html like so:
JimMC.txt.htmlText = "This is my test < a href='[URL]'>link</ a>.";
When I try to run the above the results come out blank. When I list my variables I do see that my TextField is being assign the text and html code. What I also notice is that the textWidth and textHeight value become zero. Why my results are blank? Why do the textWidth and textHeight values become zero?

Flex :: Use A Custom Text Component To Show A Series Of Comments?

I've got the base case working but I am stuck with 2 problems I cant seem to figure out:
Since I am drawing around the text, the actual height of each bubble is greater than that of the Text field, as a result, the last bubble is always chopped off. I have tried explicitly overriding the height getter, and adding some padding, but I cant seem to get it right. You can see an example here: [URL] In my layout, I have 2 VBoxes (one nested inside the other). The first vbox shows a form where the user can enter a comment, and the second box has all the comments. In order to ensure that the scrollbars only show up on the second box, I set minHeight="0" on the nested VBox, but then for some reason, some comments' text is shifted to the right. Flex :: Right Method For Modifying Text Content In Component Lifecycle?
Aug 25, 2010I have custom components which must adjust their text content based on space constraints. For example a component adds labels until there is no space, and then the content of the last label becomes "(x more)"
I do not have access to size of child controls before adding them. When in updateDisplayList, I make changes to the layout of the component, but for labels, lblInstance.text property fires events, which lead to updateDisplayList being called again. I know that updateDisplayList may be called more than once, but if there is a way to modify text without triggering events, that'd be really useful. For example, setActualSize method in UIComponent allows this kind of modification. Anything similar for text controls? Or do you have best practices for laying out and managing text content, in the context of custom Flex components?

Feb 6, 2012Flex front-end using AMF to Java back. Trying to read, in real-time, a file that is being written to. For example, a log. I'm using Java's RandomAccessFile class to read the "new" lines of the file and send them back to the UI as a byte array along with the byte offset to start reading from next time. Using an mx:List to display all lines of the text file. The problem I'm running into, is Flex, or Flash Player, running out of memory on mildly large files, >25MB. Is there any preferred method of displaying large amounts of text data in Flex that I'm missing? Or does Flex/Flash just handle this poorly and I'm basically screwed?

Some users are reporting rendering issues with this. The TextInput's text value does not appear inside the box but is misaligned and is outside of the component. You can see the screenshow below of the disabled ID column where the numbers which are supposed to be in the TextInput box are far off to the right.

Dec 24, 2009I can change the color of the label in Flex Builder, I can even BIND the color to a variable and that works, but I can't find the Color PROPERTY in order to change or reference it programatically! What is the ActionScript 3.0 code to change the font or color of a piece of text in a Flex RIA - or is caring in what color your text appears too bizzarre a request for a RIA? I wrote whole applications after just minutes of "learning" flex, how come it's taken me three days and I still can't change the color of my stupid label?

Nov 11, 2010I'm building a top view 2D map, that it's objects are stored on the server.The kind of objects are 10 and might be a photo, label, button, lists, mix of them or labels with tooltips.The component must request the "areas" that are missing on screen.An area is 1000x1000 px and is cached in flex.To move in the map, will be like in google maps (drag-and-drop).I should be able to have another list and move objects from one to another using drag-an-drop on objects. Ex.: I grab an objects from a list and I move it on this map, I release the mouse button and the item is placed there.Now the problem is: I build a custom component for this trying to emulate the item renderer for performance and recyclage, implement drag-and-drop on objects and request the areas that are missing?

I extend the List component from spark and I add some features as multiple kind of itemrenderers and use recycle on them. Of course it must be able to request the missing areas on the screen and cache it's data.Maybe create a custom layout is needed too.What I need is something that must be really fluid, so the lighter this component is, the better.
UPDATE: *There will be not any object over another.
*I will not use hitTest on bitmaps because all bitmaps are wrapped in another component,as they,for now are itemrenderers.
Anyway I already begin to do this using a class that extends the SkinnableDataContainer and a custom layout. Dec 11, 2009I've got a dynamic text field. It has text in it. I can trace "myTextBox.textWidth" and it returns 154. I'm publishing to Flash 6, but if I change to Flash 9, the trace returns 139. Any ideas why this is behaving inconsistently when changing publish settings? Any ideas how I can make this NOT happen?

eg. of mxml componet may be as simple as button label or text as complex as repeater whose data provider is a web service ( means a fresh quesy should be made to pull the data and refresh the dataprovider of repeater )
