I need to play WAV, MP3, MP4 and SWF files using Flash Player plug-in in Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome and Safari. View 1 RepliesI've been trying to understand how flash animations or a Java Applet work within a browser. I can think of a couple of ways - The Flash Player/Java Applet are machine code that's dynamically linked it, and given some parameters about the area of the screen that belongs to them; after that, they run within the same process space. The browser exposes an API that the player/applet use to talk to it and they live in a separate process. (Presumably they talk via sockets?) The API could correspond to openGL/X11/some custom calls.
These possibilities still don't explain things like how a button click can make the player full-screen, how it can play music, how it can inspect the DOM, etc. For that matter, is the video displayed by decoding to a sequence of images, and rendering them one at a time, or is there a more efficient way, e.g., of pushing the deltas in the image? The Wikipedia page on Java Applets
(1) talks about how the applet is run in a sandbox (presumably a separate process), but it doesn't say how the browser and the applet communicate. Perhaps the answer depends on the underlying platform?

If I place the video in a div that is not hidden (display:none actually), the video starts as expected. So it seems there is a problem with either Flash, JW Player, SWFObject or any combination of these when trying to load a video in a hidden div.[URL]..
View 3 RepliesI'm creating a movie player on a website of mine.. similar to YouTube. I would like people to be able to upload their movies on to my site. So my question(s) are regarding the FLV Format and if you can play other formats some how like Movs, Avis, Wmvs and Mpegs?
(1) Flash can only play FLV files? Can you get it to play Movs, Avis, Mpegs... Can I some how put in codecs for them?
(2) Can people easily get their movies to FLV format? Is this an issue for people?

I am using YouTube JS API to play videos on my site. Video is played on the dialog box. When user closes the dialog box, player is stopped - player.stopVideo(); But when user clicks again on video icon again, dialog box appears
In Chrome, the video starts playing at the previous position - OK Firefox, the video starts playing from the start irrespective of where user left it last time. - NOT OK
As per my requirements, I want the Chrome to behave as how firefox is behaving.

Is there any way to disable the "Download This Video" button from RealPlayer. It seems that when users have RealPlayer installed on their machines, it automatically adds a "Download This Video" button to any SWF that loads an FLV.
Edit: My intention isn't to prevent someone from downloading the SWF or FLV, I would just like to remove the ugly button that RealPlayer adds on top of my Flash content.

I'm using jPlayer in a website, which is a cross-platform/cross-browser jQuery solution for audio and video playback on a website. On my website, I will have users upload files either in MP3 or OGG format. I wonder though... in order to truly stay 100% stable on any browser or platform, wouldn't I need to support a corresponding OGG for every MP3 uploaded (and vice-versa)? I know jPlayer uses HTML5 when it can and will fall back to Flash when necessary, but I didn't know if you need to have that file in both formats to have it play everywhere. If I need both file formats then I suppose I'd have to convert the file to the other format using a server-side conversion. If I need just one format... then wouldn't that be just dandy! So my question is, do I need to convert? Or not?

I know a Flash object can provide a javascript API to interact with it, what I dont know is can Flash send an email directly without the need to talk to the webserver to do so? I'm looking to create a email form on a web page but the site is static (no server scripting). In my situation server scripting is not possible as there is no server, the site is 100% client side on a CD/DVD/USB Stick.
I am looking for a flash mp3 player that will work within the Opera-based browser on the Wii. The player needs to be javascript enabled (support methods like play, stop etc.) The mp3 tracklist will be built dynamically using ajax on the same page as the player so it must trigger an event when a track finishes playing (or at least provide functionality of some kind to indicate that it's time to start the next track). I'm having great problems getting Javascript to resume a flash file.The flash file loads up and the video is set to autoplay false. For some reason, any Javascript is not recognising the AS3 function. It keeps saying the function is undefined. e.g.

Is there a better approach? Also when the video is playing or is paused, I'd like to be able to read the current time of playback from the browser (I guess through Javascript). Would Javascript be able to retrieve this time from the flash player?

I am working on optimizing a page that has Flash on it. I am using optimization practices like moving Javascript to the bottom to not block. Removing inline scripts. And minimizing HTTP requests with minified css and js.The majority of the pages content is in the flash, so loading it as soon as possible is the goal. Currently there is a 2 ~ 3 second delay before the flash is even rendered (using firebug profiling)
I am wondering at what point in the page load does the browser start initializing flash on the page? Is it once the DOM element containing the flash has been rendered? Is it once the complete onload event has been fired? I imagine it probably differs with each browsers as well.
Is there anyway to remove a section of HTML with a javascript? Ive seen ones that replace text segments, and remove certain tags like <br>. I want it to remove the flash applet once its done playing. I know that its possible, I just need someone that knows javascript better than me.

I have a video playing on my page. I want to show and hide some div's when the video reaches a certain point. Lets say hide something on 10th second and show it again on 20th second.I can easily do it in HTML5 with video tag and currentTime attribute but for IE I have to create the same functionality and I think with flash based videos (from YouTube or something like that).Is there a way to detect the current time of a video playing on my website, embeded from YouTube, Metacafe or any other video sharing site?I know I could detect it in flash and make it run some JavaScript function but I don't have flash nor have the skills to do it in AS3.
View 2 RepliesI'm working on a site, for kids, which has a small avatar in the corner that talks.The avatar is a flash file and the plan is to determine what it says through a mix of javascript and ajax.
Unfortunately when I make the flash file play an Mp3 file through JavaScript, I can't seem to stop the sound.. so when I keep clicking on a link which causes it to talk, I hear the sound repeated x times.
The odd thing is, when I attach the very same code to a button in flash, there seems to be no such limitation. It seems as if it won't store anything in global variables when calling from JavaScript.

I have a website with a simple Flash animation behind some text and semi-transparent images as a background. I have used swfobject to embed it and set wmode opaque to make it display correctly in most browsers.For browsers without Flash, the user gets a static background image instead and would not know they were missing anything. However, Android users get the flash background on top of everything as per the known issue with how Flash content is rendered in the Android browser making the site unusable.
I have added a crude browser sniff javascript function to the swfobject code to prevent it from loading for any user agent whith 'Mobile' in it:

The only problem I have left is for Android users browsing with 'Mobile View' turned off as the user agent pretends to be a desktop version of Safari (I think). I do not wish to disable the Flash animation for all Safari users. Is there a way of blocking it for just Andriod users - even if they have 'Mobile View' disabled?
Possible ideas include:detecting the Flash version with JavaScript or Flash. Does Android use specific versions (version numbers) of Flash which are different from the desktop equivalent? blocking the specific user agents used by Android devices with 'Mobile View' disabled.
We're currently creating a Flash presentation (just one movie really) which needs to play and loop on DVD players in retail outlets. It's basically going to be a series of JPEGs which animates between frames. What I need to know is: What is the best size (in pixel dimensions) to go for? How will this be affected by different TV sizes / ratios, such as widescreen vs. normal? We're planning on publishing the Flash movie as a .mov file and then burning this to a DVD. Does that sound a good idea?
