I'm thinking about learning a flash 3d engine. I need some advice on which one to use. There's quite a few out there. Which is the best? I'm also considering whether there're a good bunch of tutorials on the web, that can make the learning easy.

Introduction: I think Nape is a relatively new engine so some of you may not know it. It's supposedly faster than box2d and I like that there is decent documentation. I am decent at AS3's basic functionality, but every time I try to implement some kind of engine or framework I can't even seem to get it to work. With Nape I feel I got a little further than before but I still got stuck.
My problem: I'm using Adobe CS5, I managed to import the SWC file like described here. Next I tried to copy the source of one of the demo's like this one and get it to work but I keep getting errors. I made a new class file, copied the demo source to it, and tried to add it to the stage. My stage code basically looks like this:

I'm looking at creating a game which involves many bouncing balls on the screen, and the user can sortof select one of those balls and take it out... The balls should be able to bounce of eachother and the walls. I've tried implementing this from scratch, following the tutorials at [URL] - but it's not quite working for me, and if I need the game to become more complicated- probably best to use an existing engine. So is there an existing engine that will work very fast and well for this sort of thing? At a glance- it didn't seem like box2d or flixel would work for this... but what do you say?

View 3 RepliesI have a project coming up where I'll be rendering text paths on a circle; the text has to be dynamic, so I can't just bring in a precomputed set from illustrator. Now, laying text on a circle ought not be too hard, I'll do it per character with per character rotation. The trouble is, I can't seem to figure out how to get per-character advance from flash's font engine. It's 99% probable that I'm just overlooking something obvious. But as far as I can tell, the only way to get flash font metrics is via flash.text.engine.FontMetrics which ostensibly is per-font, not per-character.
A fallback that I'm not looking forward to implementing is pre-computing per-char advance on my own ( since this project will be using embedded fonts known in advance ). I've got ObjC code lying around for generating glyph maps for opengl, so I could generate that data offline and make it available to my flash code ( probably as static constants or some malarkey ).

View 1 RepliesIt seems to me like the biggest arguments against Flash right now falls into three categories:It is slow and battery intensive. Basically that it uses too much CPU than it should. It is not an open standard. Eveyone knows how HTML/CSS and JavaScript operate inside. Flash is not open.It has security flaws which make it insecure.
Seems like all of these concerns could be addressed if Adobe opensourced the Flash player. Third parties could contribute to and audit the code base, and optimize and fix bugs. Adobe could concentrate on making the apps and environments that author Flash content best. Well, Adobe hasn't done that yet. Why not? What are the business/technical reasons that makes Adobe want to keep control of a closed source Flash player?
I am playing around a bit with the PushButton Engine for game development in Flash and have come across a need for a Camera like the Camera that follows Mario in Mario Games. Flashpunk has a nice implementation of it.
Does PushButton have it out of the Box?(I searched for it and didn't find, hence the question here).
